Coming back from having quit eve for a while.
The reasons lie within the really bad player-gm interaction.
The lack of proper refunds given the game difficulty and buggy/difficult user interface.

So I've been playing GuildWars amongst other things for the simple
reason that it is easy to get into pvp.
Its easy to learn about the game without spending ages - but sure
it is a different game.

First off, we need to make small pvp possible, outside of big gangs
and blobs.
1 vs camp, 1 vs blob, 1 vs gank are all not fair - sure they're kills
but it also kills people's interest.
We can't really take them off the game, but we should figure out
more ways for people to have fun with their ships, 1v1 2v2 3v3 and so on.
Maybe an organized dueling "mode" place, you name it.
Every empire system should have one, just for entertainment.
Even with free ships to pvp in (cheap tech 1 fun?).

Secondly, why can't you implement a way to automatically
buy the items you need for a said "build" and fit them to your ship?
You can then have a template system for fittings, and people
could exchange them. I would recommend making a GW account just
to learn a few things about the ease of these templates.
The amount of time it takes to PREPARE to have fun in eve is
simply ridiculous, we need to reduce that.

I would also like to see general UI improvements, makings things more
intuitive and safe from common mistakes.
I've lost 3 clone sets because I couldn't figure out how this system
works. It wasn't obviously documented anywhere - should people go
asking for information?
No, in my opinion information should be intelligently be presented
to the user through the interface.

I may be adding more to this, other similar ideas are welcome in this
thread. Please keep it to useful.

---

I can't seem to connect to the test server without having a hard crash and having to reboot.

I made a new folder called evetest in C:\, copied the eve files from the main install over to evetest. Downloaded lasted patch and clicked the Launch game now button (which would usually connect me) but instead I got the error where it says "Incompatable (Version)" upon entering game.

So I figured I couldn't use that button anymore (I used to be able to run the test server by running the patch and it would tell me its already installed and would I like to launch the game) since im on vista I went to start > games and had two eve installs of course. Clicked the test server one and got the same "Incompatable (Version)" upon entering game. This method also worked before this latest patch.

Since I cant seem to edit the target line of the exe from start > games I went into c:\evetest and made a shortcut of the exe to desktop and added the line /server:87.237.38.50. Start it up and great it works! Put in my login details but when I hit my portrait my whole computer locks up and I have to restart.

Anyone have any ideas?

Since i couldn't find a solution and it was summer time, i found it a good time to take a lil break from eve, so i did.

Now i'm back, and the problem isn't fixed yet (for me at least) if not it's got even worse. Just to be sure, i went to singularity to see, if i have the same problem there too, but everything was working perfectly. So i assume it's a server side issiue.

Anyway to the point. Is there any way to minimize this problem? If yes, then how? For me the problem is starting to get really annoying, and i really wish this could be solved.

/Denno

Edited by: Strill on 27/08/2008 00:00:23
It's evident from CCP's anti-blob measures that they really don't understand what problem they're trying to solve. They release titan doomsday which can annihilate an entire fleet with the push of a button. They release stealth bomber bomb launchers which can deal large amounts of damage to tightly packed groups of ships. These were supposed to fix the "blob" problem, but they both failed. The reason for this is because they're thinking of blobbing as just a simple tactic, and that if they make that tactic unfavorable enough, people will move on to something else. The flaw with this train of thought is that blobbing is not a tactic, it is a strategy, the only viable one at that, and one that arises naturally from the game mechanics in place.

You have large fortified player owned structures. The main goal is to take them down, and the more firepower you have, the faster you can take them down. There are no downsides to bringing as many ships as you possibly can. Bringing fewer ships, or splitting up your ships does nothing to further your main goal. This is the fundamental problem. The only viable strategy is a single focused assault on a single enemy position. CCP saw that people didn't like this, and decided to release anti-blob measures in the form of doomsday devices. The problem here is that the only viable strategy is still a single focused assault on an enemy position. People all gather into large groups and attack, so if we put a bunch of penalties on gathering into groups, people won't do it right? No. Gathering into as large of a group as you can is still the only strategy. If you attack a POS and don't bring a blob, your capital ships will be killed by the enemy blob. If you attack a POS and do bring a blob, your blob will be killed by the enemy titan and your capital ships will be killed by the enemy blob. Natural blob-inducing bottlenecks such as jump gates don't help this, and it ends up that you just can't win at all. Thus, instead of nerfing the blobbing tactic, CCP nerfed attacking in general.

In short, blobbing is not about putting lots of ships close together, and it can't be countered by weapons that attack lots of ships that are close together. The only way to counter blobbing is by adding goals to pvp which make it such that not putting lots of ships close together can directly improve your chances of obtaining your goals.

A while back, after Trinity and all the fantastic graphics that were introduced, we were told that not all of the models in the game were updated, and that more would be upgraded in small batches. Now those models that were upgraded look AWESOME, I'm a great fan of EVE ship designs and sometimes fly ships solely based on their looks (at least when it doesn't hurt too much to fly them in a particular situation), but some things were clearly left out.

The tier 2 BCs and tier 3 BSs all have the same models and most of their textures from BEFORE Trinity, only a couple of shiny bits were added to make them look like something was actually done to them. I fly mostly Amarrian ships, so I'll use them as comparison. Let's take the Omen and the Abaddon. If we compare the level of detail of both models, we get the impression that the Omen could actually be LARGER than the Abaddon (window size for instance). Not to mention the way the engines of the Abaddon look like (my teeth hurt I each time I look at them).

So, CCP, or anyone who knows for that matter, are there plans to rework those ship models to be on par with the high standards set by Trinity in the near future? I know the graphics team is probably all worked up with Ambulation at the moment (MUST... HAVE... AMBULATION... NOW!!!), but those ships really stand out and look poorly made when compared to the rest.

Also, there were some mentions of making previously "graphically hidden" modules (like the NOSs, Tractor beams, etc) visible on the ship models, is this also coming anytime soon?

Once i have depleted the rounds to the point where there is 1 round left in each gun the bug occurs. Each last round fires just fine, but i have yet to have a single "last" round hit my target. i have tried this against battleships and capital ships and not a single time has a "last" round hit. To make sure it wasn't a fluke i refrained from reporting it until i had fired hundres of more "last" rounds and i have concluded that the last round in the barrel must be bugged as not a single one has hit.

Again i use 720mm howitzer II's on a muninn with Tremor ammo

balance between races - by tla s'hpyt

Currently I believe the races are a bit unbalanced, but since I haven't done everything in game I'd like to ask some other people who have experience in different areas and see what others think. Most of my experience has been with caldari/minmatar and most of my pvp experience has been in fleet battles or alliance warfare. So I figured I'd post here and get some peoples input on how the 4 races stack up against each other. I figured I'd compair the 3 main ways to play the game; fleet/sov pvp, solo/small gang pvp, pve. Also I have tried to base the ranking on the general value of a race (not what 1 elite guy/group can do) and an average of all the usefull ships of that race in that area combined.

pve may seem a small area compared to the other two but you should consider all forms of pve in it. Such as small gangs doing exploration (logistics support?), low lvl missions and vessels of that size, high end missioning vessels (command ships, marauders), exploration itself (cov ops), mining.

Here is what I currently believe the balance to be

rankingpvefleetsolo
bestcaldaricaldariminmatar
2ndamarramarrgallente
3rdgallentegallenteamarr
4thminmatarminmatarcaldari

This may need adjusting which is why I'm here to ask what people with different experience think (particularly amarr/gallente).

The reason I put caldari top in fleet is that while they aren't the strongest fleet snipers/tacklers/capitals they have best logistics(by far when u count osprey and their use in pos rep) extremely strong ew as well as a good selection of cheap noob fleet ships (blackbird).

Re-mirror - 5 MOM jobs down the toilet??? - by Mr Smooth

I suppose i will get some peeps telling me that i should have taken screenshots and of course you are right, but having just had a mirror less than 2 weeks ago, it never occurred to me that it would happen this soon.

After claiming sovereignty, training cap ship construction from 4->5, building poses, hauling all the stuff for 5 MOMs and just yesterday morning finally being able to put the jobs into production, imagine the pain when I've just logged in to find that it was all likely to be for nothing. In just over 3 weeks my corp would have been the proud owners of 2 nyx, 2 aeons and a wyvern.

I have two questions for CCP

1. Is there any chance of getting my jobs reinstated even without screenshots as, at this point in time, i am really not keen on repeating those labours.

2. Is there not a simple way of allowing MOMs or even titans, for the very few peeps that could fly them anyway, to be spawned for peeps wanting to try them out. I know part of the enjoyment/interest is building them yourselves, but i have experienced that and it isn't that much fun. ;)

Any help would be gratefully received and i know that this isn't CAOD, but please, if you are moved to flame this thread, please don't, unless you derive some pleasure from kicking a man when he's down. ;)

Thanks
