Cool Ship Names 2 - by Anddeh McNab

I take most of my ship names from various references from the Warhammer 40k (including the Horus Heresy) and Warcraft universes:

Maelstrom: Aeria Gloris - (Literally: Heavenly Glory) Name of a Black Ship that flew with the Death Guard expedition during the Great Crusade. Black Ships were used by the Silent Sisters to hunt down rogue psykers.

Hurricane: Ventus Furor II - (Literally: Wind Fury II) Not a reference to anything 40k or pre-Heresy but I like the name. First ship was lost during a bodged Blockade mission.

Scythe: Ferrus Manus - Ferrus Manus was the primarch of the Iron Hands legion. He had living metal hands and was a master blacksmith

Mammoth: Grobbulus, Nurgleth - Twin ship at opposite ends of the galaxy (sort of). Grobbulus is a fat boss in Naxxaramas and Nurgleth is an alternate name for Nurgle, Lord of Decay.

Hoarder: Mortarion, Typhon - Mortarion is the primarch of the Death Guard legion and Typhon was the captain of the first company (later known as Typhus, Herald of Nurgle)

Apothesis: Light's Hope Named after Light's Hope Chapel. Argent Dawn base of operations in the plaguelands.

Rifter: Scourge of Angels Pewpew'd enough Angel Cartel so it was a fitting name.

Thrasher: Trasher Salvaging boat, picks up the Trash

Stabber: Shrike Named after a Raven Guard space marine, specialists of hit and run warfare.

Reaper: Little Horus, Aximand Little Horus was the nickname a captain of the Lunar Wolves (later the Sons of Horus). Named because he looked akin to his primarch, Horus. Aximand was little Horus' true name.

Breacher: Baal Home system from the Blood Angels space marines

Probe: Mosquito Small, fast and full of....blood? Maybe.

Wreathe: Barbarus Named after the Death Guard homeworld.

Burst: Miner Trouble, Play on words

Vigil: Alpharius, Omegon Primarch of the Alpha Legion, specialists of the covert warfare. Omegon was his twin brother.

Slasher: Sanguinius Kinda looks like it has wings like Sanguinius, primarch of the Blood Angels, did

Yes, I semi-collect ships...

Helios: 'Insight'
Deimos: 'Leave Me Alone'

And many, many more....'Transmission', 'Isolation', 'Decades', 'Ice Age', etc, etc, etc...

I will usually name my ships from the freespace 1 and 2 series from the great war.

I call my megatrons Bastions unless it s avindicator or a navy or te tech II.

I call my Hyperions = hecate. from freespace 2. it is a name for te newer destroyers. In te game the destroyers are te bs in te game.

I call my Haulers = Soc
I call my Mymnridon = Lysander
Brutix = Hamaako
or others.

Catalyst = Unicron
coercer = Omikron

Frigates range as well. Depends o wat i want them to be.

Once the patch for the scramblers come out. I will call my Arazu Dark Archon

Vigilance = Twilight Archon.

so it depends on what i am ueing the ships for as well.

Some Japanese named ships (and yes I use the kanji in game, gotta love unicode enabled text fields)

salvaging cormorant: 燃無芥丸
Its totally made up, I romanize it as: moenashigomi-maru
which (very) loosely translates to: unburnable garbage ship

Badger MkII: 大胴丸
Again, totally made up, romanized: daidou-maru
literally: big hulled ship. although dou is also used in armour terminology for breatplates, hence babelfish's translation of: Large Curiass.

other ships:
Hawk: Merlin (of course)
Missioning Myrmidon and Drake: Gere and Freke (mythological wolves of odin and the names of my dogs)

and for somereason, I keep naming rifters "scrute me, I dare you"

I believe someone said that meant "Godly Avenger". I don't know any latin, but i googled Punitor Pius, and it came up with a latin to english dictionary, that said the above.

When I am pirating in an area I replace my name in my ship's name with that of some random and usually relitively new player that I have seen around. Then people don't run away if they see my ship on scanner :D

I tend to change my ship's names quite often. The only ones I have retained throughout my time in Eve have been:

Faugh a Ballagh - Gaelic for 'Clear The Way' and the battlecry of the Irish Brigade in the ACW. I normally use this for my Raven.

Coeur de Lion - 'Lionheart' - King Richard I's nickname. Despite the fact that he probably only set foot in the country once (when he was crowned), he is generally regarded as England's greatest king. For Megathrons.

Salah al Din - Richard's opponent in the Holy Lands and one of history's greatest generals and leaders. Sound cool too! I use this name for BCs.

Personally I like the sound of all of them and they seem to fit the relevant ship classes quite well.

My Rokh: The Fomoraig

Story behind that name is that, during a tabletop RPG I ran, a friend of mine came up with an idea for a character that was a very dumb member of a sentient race of birds who had a mindlink with a very intelligent housecat. The bird was named Fomoraig, and damned if it wasn't the most hilarious roleplaying I'd ever seen.

Ergo Proxy was the name of a character who called himself the Emmissiary of Death

Prowler : MONO BLANE ( name of a ghost locomotive in the second book of Stephan King's Dark Tower series )

Sacrilege : Iron Golem

Malediction : Baby Golem :)

Vagabond : Orochimaru ( Snake style Ninja from Naruto episodes )

Fenrir : NOSTROMO ( Name of the cargo ship in Alien I )
