Love this thread.

I use it all the time and have the OP printed out for easy reference.

I might add that it is a good idea to get the Basic Rank 1 skills to Level 5, it will help you in the long run.

By Basic I mean the following:
Drone Skill in Drone Category.
Electronics skill in Electronics category
Engineering Skill in Engineering Category
Spaceship command skill in Spaceship command category
Mechanic Skill in mechanic category
etc....
Really it will help you a lot!

(Says he who has yet to get them all to L5!)

Targeting (target more ships)

*Engineering*
Energy Grid Upgrades (use PDS, RCU)

*Gunnery and/or Missile Launcher Ops (depends on race)*
Gunnery/Missile Launcher Ops (see above)
All Support Gunnery/Missile skills (as above)
Weapons Upgrades (fit more stuff)
Advanced Weapons Upgrades (fit more stuff)

*Mechanic*
Repair Systems (don't have to pay to repair ships)

*Navigation*
Acceleration Control (go faster w/AB/MWD)
Afterburner (go faster)
Fuel Conservation (use less cap)
High Speed Maneuvering (use MWDs)

Add to these the prereqs for the ship you want to fly and the weapons you'll use (T2 is a good aim too) plus the tanking skills, armor or shield, and you're set to start using them. But only actual experience with them will really make you a proficient pilot.

2 week old Noob here . Thank You for the great post. Much better than my old method which was try to fit something. Read the skills needed . Go buy the books and train to use it method.... This method was working but, having the info all in one place is much easier and efficient.

Should definitely be stickied - I figured out a fair amount of this by myself when I was starting out, but it's always good to have that 'yes, other people think this is a good idea, no, I'm not being a complete idiot' feeling. Should be required reading for all new players.

Damn, F'nog, that was really great. I needed a concise, easy to remember guide like this one, that covered the basics and gave the right amount of detail. I tweaked the list a bit to suit my needs (more Drones, no PvP EW just yet, etc.) and saved it, and now I'm happily down the road towards efficiently flying a Cruiser instead of rushing towards the big stuff without the proper skills to squeeze something good out of it.

this is a great guide. will use it on my new char. (this one was ment as a fun char but got a bit further but kinda unblanced so hard to train)

IMHO the skills for NOS (Energy Emissions 2? been a while) are as vital as any others. This applies both to PVP and missionrunners - I can't imagine trying to run a mission tank on any mission you couldn't complete in a Velator without the ability to siphon cap from the targets.

T2 drones are relatively inexpensive in terms of skillpoint (for light/medium drones), and the drones themselves aren't that expensive either. But the racial drone skills will cost about as much as a battlecruiser to get the set of 4.

Assuming that your learning skills are done, two weeks will get you reasonably proficient with T2 medium/lights.

It's a waste of time discover after 2 months that learning skills make u train faster, expecially sinc first levels need just few minutes. OK, it's not specifically ship related, but can u put a section "learn those skills to train requistes faster?"

This thread was created to help folks learn the proper skills in order to fly and operate their ships better. As opposed to mining or manufacturing, for example.

Dictionary <-- This link has a bunch of terms used in EVE.

Cap means capacity, think of it as a giant battery used to power your weapons and equipment on your ship.

Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that most of the engineering/mechanics/electronics related skills use intelligence & memory as primary attributes. So a new player could just power those two attributes to advanced level 4, and then take a break from the learning tree by training these core skills up. Intelligence and memory are also the primary attributes for the other basic learning skills, so you can alternate between training learning and engineering/mechanics/electronics.

One thing you might want to mention is how important learning skills are. I wouldn't recommend that everybody makes a character and doesn't play it for 2 months while learning skills are training... but after you get your ships setup and into cruisers probably, you should REALLY invest in learning skills.

I found this VERY helpful. I've been playing for about three months, and I came across this just as I was finishing up bringing all the advanced learning skills to level IV. I've made a point of acquiring all the recommended skills and training them to at least level 1. This has already greatly increased my flexibility in equipping and operating ships.

This has some nice stuff but it really aimed at a generalist rather than than a newb trying fly a decent ship.

I dont think its something I would reccomend.

Any guide should really break down into 3 or 4 basic paths.
-shields vs armor
-guns vs missiles.

These skills can give you that extra little boost to put you over the top. If you want to be the uberest of the uber, these skills will help.

Energy Systems Operation
-Energy Management gives you a larger bank, but this skill earns you interest more quickly. This skill recharges your capacitor by 5 percent more per level.

Rocket Specialization
-If you really want to squeeze the damage out of your single launcher hardpoint, this skill allows you to use T2 rocket launchers, and gives them a 2 percent damage bonus per level.

Electronic Warfare
-Your limited midslots prohibit you from using too much in the way of ECM or jamming, but this skill will reduce your ECM's capacitor need by 5 percent per level if you do decide to mount one.

What should I train for the Enyo/Ishkur?

Required (Enyo/Ishkur):

Gallente Frigate 5
Spaceship Command 3
Engineering 5
Mechanic 5
Assault Ships 1

Strongly Recommended:

These skills are always critical, no matter which ship and which setup.

Assault Ships 2-5
-Gives 10 percent optimal range per level, +5m drone capacity per level (Ishkur), 7.5 percent tracking speed per level (Enyo)

Evasive Manuvering
-Critical for improving agility, one of these ships' strongest suits

Small Hybrid Turret Gunnery
-Your ship's primary weapons will be small hybrids. This skill adds 5 percent per level to those weapons' damage.

Small Blaster/Railgun Specialization
-These skills are required for T2 small hybrid weapons, which are superior in terms of damage dealing. Skills add 2 percent damage per level to the weapons' damage.

Repair Systems
-You're going to be armor tanking, so repairs are crucial. This skill gives a 5 percent reducing in repair system cycle time, speeding repairs.

Propulsion Jamming
-Webs and jammers help immensely when fighting. This skill reduces those modules' capacitor requirements by 5 percent per level.

Afterburner
-Closing to the target quickly and orbiting rapidly is important when dealing with a larger opponent. This skill provides a 10 percent duration bonus per level for afterburners, thus giving you more bang for your capacitor buck.

Navigation
-This skill will boost your sub-light speed by 5 percent per level. Take advantage of it.

Controlled Bursts
-With a small capacitor, you have to make the most of your shots. This skill reduces the capacitor need of weapon turrets by 5 percent per level.

Rapid Firing
-With small turrets, you need to fire quickly to do damage. Rapid Firing increases your turret firing time by 4 percent per level.

Weapon Upgrades
-Sometimes you need a little extra oomph for your small hybrid turrets, and your CPU isn't that large. Weapon Upgrades skill reduces the CPU need of weapon upgrade modules by 5 percent per level.

Energy Managment
-With a small capacitor, you've got to budget your setup carefully. This skill provides 5 percent bonus capacitor per level, giving you just a bit of extra breathing room.

Setup Dependent Skills:

These skills are good to have if you have the relevant modules in your setup.

Energy Emission Systems
-You'll probably have a nosferatu or two in your setup, and this skill reduces the capacitor need of those modules by 5 percent per level.

Rockets
-A good rocket is hard to find, but with this skill, it'll be just a little bit easier. This skill gives a rocket damage boost of 5 percent per level. Requires Missile Launcher Operation 1.

Rapid Launch
-If you are going to be using rockets, this skill will help you pump them out more quickly, to the tune of 3 percent per level.

Drones (Ishkur)

He means race as in ship's race. If you're flying mainly Caldari ships, missiles are very important. If you're flying mainly Gal or Amarr, Guns are very important. Your personal race has no bearing on this.

To the Gunnery/Missle debate, I would say train both. Primary first but also train the secondary up some too. So if your Gallente train gunnery up but dont forget about missles, and vise versa for Caldari

Thank you so much for this informative guide. I just set ECM up to get me all the stuff you listed. I was looking for a guide on what to do, I have two months to blow training as I'll be busy with other projects, so this gives me the nice concise list of things to train. ;)

T2 is a tough subject, with a lot of differing opinions. But I'll give mine. T2 weapons are very difficult to fit, so you should have all your base fitting skills at V before you bother to train for them.

Then it's a question of money: can you afford the mods and the skills for them? I like T2 because they're often cheaper than the best named (non-faction) T1 and easier to get, but they're still expensive and you won't get any from NPCs.

I'm tired, so I hope this makes sense and answers some of your question.

LOL, here I was gonna post a threadasking what skills to focus on to move up from cruisers (to Battlecruiser I imagine) - and you have gone and answered my questions! In the time it takes to get the ISK together (I have less than half what I need), I am sure I can get all my skills up to a decent level having gotten the core skills to 4, and right now working gunnery to 5 so I can get a particular targetting skill.

But I have to ask - when is it worth the time (and money I imagine) to start getting skills for the t2 modules? For example, I have just started playing with drones and I am sure could spend a few weeks just getting the basic skills up to use the ones I would like to use, use more of them, etc., but might I be better served geting guns and missiles to t2 now so I can fit t2 guns/batteries?

I think listing the reasons for training the skills is helpful but the fact that you include minimum levels in a guide that is suposed to be general purpose for all ships under any cirumstances kind of conflicts.

The OP says in the title "what do you need to fly xxx ship WELL" , so he is right. It's a perfect basics for ANY situation. Of course, if you spend your day killing npc's frigate in a caracal, you will not need so much.

Nobody tell you to stay in a station for 2 months, you bring these skills to 3, while doing what you want to do, wich takes 3 weeks from day 1 , then you go for lvl 4, wich takes 3/4 more weeks.

Anyway, unless you plan to stay in high sec, there is no point in piloting a ship with minimal requirements, you know what's going to happen next. I dont understand why most people want to have the biggest ship in the shortest time, or amass enormous amounts of wealth they dont even use .

This really should be stickied. Stellar guide for what a 2 to 3 month old char should train once they can fly their first BS. I think most chars sprint to get the skills to fly ship XXX and fit module Y and once they are there get a bit lost for what to do next. At least I did. Its amazing how much following this guide has increased my survivability.

And I would add the EW stuff at the end for what to train next. EW sure helps against solo and two man pirate teams once you brave 0 sec.
