Howdy all, I'm fiddling with getting eve running with a kind of... unusual card. An ATI FireGL 256.
Wine v1.01 at the moment. Ubuntu 8.10, fonts installed. EVE premium client.
Scoop so far, is that EVE Will crash on me. I've got it set for Allow dx apps to stop the mouse, allow window decorations, window manager control the windows, and emulate a virtual desktop at 1024x768. vertex shader is hardware, and pixel shader checked. Application settings is set to XP. OSS checked in sound.
In game settings... no premium content, no sound or voice, fullscreen, 1024x768, 24 bit. And as many of those detail and effect buttons as I've managed to get unchecked.
Eve will start up fine, shows splash, goes to login. If I login fast it goes in to char selection, again as long as I don't waste any time it will login and sit in the station. If I move the camera around much, or attempt to fiddle with the settings it hard locks the entire machine. If I leave it and don't move the mouse, It seems to stay in and working forever. A singularly useless way to play a game.
just installed the latest FGLRX drivers from ati.
Any ideas?
I don't think it's the lose focus bug, as EVE is the only thing running.

I'll give it a shot.
Also of note, I'm an idiot and hadn't put the registry changes in. They are now and Now and I've locked up on the settings screen again, but not a hard lock this time.
Progress is grand.

Eve seems to like you if you use latest and greatest.
Check out the following; * Latest versions of wine (1.1.12 apparently works for Quantum rise atm) (1.1.15 is latest source from Wine) As previously mentioned the package for Ubuntu should do you fine. If that doesnt work, go get the source from WineHQ * Latest GFX drivers (as you have). * Drop in the arial fonts file in drive_c\windows\fonts\ * Drop in the d3dx9_36.dll file in drive_c\windows\system32\ * Add reg edits if still not working by now. (Which you have)
Check out http://eveaholic.mmmetrics.co.uk/installing-wine/ for a detailed version of this checklist.
Tell us what you get.

Edited by: LORD STEALTH on 16/02/2009 13:08:21 I fiddled around some last night, and got it working sort of. *edit* Working sort of consisted of about 2 hours of normal gameplay. Char selection pics were corrupted/kind of smeared looking. FPS in stations was a steady 40 until a text box like skills or market was up, then down to 25 or so. In space was a max of 13 and more generally around 7 or 8. Hard lock occured after logging out and hitting drop down menu for account name*edit*
The registry entries made it alot happier. Still had one hard lock, after that my xorg.conf got screwey and decided to run the refresh rate on my monitor out of range, so I just kinda took a break after that and did some flying on the windows box.
I think just to make sure that I haven't er fingered myself into a corner, I'll do a quick re-install of the OS, Wine from source, etc etc... This is just a supplementary machine I have laying around, noticed it had an agp slot and got curious, so I'm not in any hurry.
Thanks for the tips.

For the moment, clicking in the Eve window to gain focus will kill it.
It's recommended to always shrink Eve down when doing something else. That way you won't be tempted to click Eve to the front.

I run EVE with virtual windows and I don't have the problem (I play EVE on the first screen and use a lot of other application on second one without any issue)
Run EVE in this way : /usr/bin/wine explorer /desktop=2,1680x1050 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"

If it locks up hard for you, it is not Wine or EVE's problem. It is the problem with the ATI drivers.
I've had nothing but grief with them in the past. I can verify that I've used Wine 1.01 from Debian (same as the Ubuntu people use), and it is rock solid with classic graphics on premium client.
I've had crashes with Intel graphics. nVidia works flawlessly. Worked on the GeForce 6150 embedded and the nVidia 9400 cheap card for $50.

I think you've nailed it with the drivers thing on hardlock. I played a bit with the standard straight off of the 8.10 disk drivers... and it actually played. I mean it sucked and there were no textures and the like, but it worked.
b0rked ati linux drivers. Who woulda thunk it?

ATI card work very good with latest drivers on classic/premium lite client (tranquility & Singularity)
But it's for the 4000 serie. For Other I can't say and the FireGL one is not a gaming card. (Like the Nvidia Quadro) |

It works with premium lite now? The last time I tried it the models didn't render correctly and I have a HD4850 using the latest 9.1 driver.

the fire card actually works really surprisingly well for gaming.
The windows drivers leave some things to be desired though. and some games just refuse to believe that the card can do the work and you wind up fiddling.
which is exactly why that card is in the old spare machine and an old cheap crippled 6800 something or other is in the windows box.
no real update on the weirdness yet, been too busy with work and not falling straight to sleep when I get home.

I only have that when I use the X button on the top, just exitting through the game menu works fine <SIG> I bought the wife a toy Deimos to have fun with while i play eve!

When running multiple instances of EVE/wine windows do NOT close a session with the "x" button, as that kills all the wine sessions currently running. As the previous poster indicated, close the game either with the 'quit game' button or, as us old timers are more used to "ctrl+q".

Regarding ATI problems, on a ATI Radeon Mobility X1600 (yes, a lappy) EvE will freeze/crash unless I set wines affinity to be bound to a specific core with taskset. This is on an Opensuse laptop, other distros probably include taskset too.
Use instead of: wine -args program this: taskset 0x1 wine -args program This will bind to first core (0x1 is a bitmask, 0x2 is second core, 0x3 would be use first and second - which is trouble for me).

Or you can just use different instances of wine. In home dir you have a .wine dir. Make a .wine2 dir and copy (cp -a) *.reg and dosdevices from .wine to .wine2. then make a symbolic link (ln -s) from .wine/drive_c to .wine2/drive_c
Now launch Eve clients with: First, also sets window title: env WINEPREFIX="~/.wine" taskset 0x1 wine explorer /desktop=EvE-Client1,1440x900 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe" Second, also bound to first core (for me for more stability at least): env WINEPREFIX="~/.wine2" taskset 0x1 wine explorer /desktop=EvE-Client2,1440x900 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\eve.exe"
My window-titles usually reflects my 2 chars names and the 1440x900 resolution I find nice on a 1680x1050 screen size.
I usually, just in case, tend to re-copy all the *.reg files from .wine to .wine2 after an eve client patch/update.
Hope it helps someone.
Oh, and avoid fglrx version 8.10 and 8.11 like a plague, they are rubish.

Premium works on ATI with Catalyst 9.2 and Wine 1.1.15. But not out of the box.
You have to compile wine 1.1.15 yourself.
In the file dlls/wined3d/glsl_shader.c you need to exchange every "(GL_LIMITS(glsl_varyings) / 4" with "13".
As described here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17437
Works like a charm.

That is true, you can, and it does work, but I was referring to those who didn't want or couldn't (for space reasons) want to. ;)
Both are valid, but actually for running multiple clients, having just one .wine works fine, its just a matter of remembering not to close the session as opposed to the 'game'.

Oh wow, I was having problems with my whole system freezing with eve-online after character selection and that taskset tip seems to have solved it. (logged in so far 10 times in a row without a freeze.)

If you notice, the windows drive itself is just symlinked to the second wine dir, so my approach eats just as much space as the *.reg files take, which should be less than 100k I guess.

Xeiyu
I got a problem of my system crashing after character selection... until I connect via ssh to kill EVE..
This was fixed in current TQ, rebroken in early Apocrypha and now fixed (hopefully... I dont need to keep the laptop logged ready to kill anymore ;))
