Freeform contracts are as old as the current contract system.
Scammers have been very successfully using these for ages.

I believe CCP have previously stated that scamming with plexs in-game is legal. (I have no links, just memory)
However, scamming with GTCs is not legal.. go figure.
Anyway, the reason it's a scam is that you'd be paying 1 billion isk for nothing. I have a simple rule when using free form contracts: don't. --------------------------------------

The scam here is that the seller has used a freeform contract and typed up the description of the contract in such a way, that it almost looks like it isn't a freeform contract. It looks like there's 4x PLEX being offered, but that's just text, it isn't actually part of the interface, it's just something the seller typed. If you look at where it says "Reward", it clearly states "None". In other words, if you'd accept this contract, you'd be paying one billion ISK for absolutely nothing.

Its worth it to browse them though if you have the time, every great now and then you'll find a scammer who failed at reading comprehension and typed in the free form wrong and it ends up being a legit and decent deal.
Note I said every great now and then |

Tried and failed on me. The big window that pops up before hand telling you that it's a freeform contract and that you'll get nothing from was a big hint
How people trick get tricked is beyond me. Although I dislike scamming plexes as I think people that do it are not worthy of even insulting s****(Another word for algae) by naming them that. If people can't take the two warning they get then they shouldn't have ISK to begin with.
What is funny a corp mate went around and asked for contracts and I believe you where one of them. What he did was contract back a REAL "WTB" contract for a plex for the price the scammers where asking. All but one ignored the contract. He picked up a PLEX for 245mil I believe.
Scammer has him on ignore, CAREBEAR VICTOR!

Freeform contract scams are nothing new, but I will give this guy credit it is better than most I have seen. The fact that they are revolving around PLEX cards is a bit newer, and has taken off since that one guy's confession in the C & P forum.

No, they said you can't scam with PLEXes as in scamming the items themselves. There's no actual PLEXes involved here, just a bunch of words in a freeform contract.

I dont know exactly how freeforms work but shouldn't you be able to scam sell a regular caracal as a navy caracal under this system and then avoid the 'no reward' pop-up window by throwing a real caracal in the window? It seems to me that you could do so and it would be one of the more flawless scams out there. Of course you would pay like 6 mil (lol) for the caracal, but that's still a significant profit for a more flawless use of this method.
In expansion, could you use code to link a picture of the ship/plex/mod using a hyperlink or something? Again I dont know about freeforms, but that would make it even more believable.
Of course if someone confirms all this, then I will be scamming like this from my base in stain because there are a lot of people here these days.

Waiting for a GM reply on that. As they are a item officially worth RL isk it seem strange and I recall some comment against PLEX scams when they were introduced.

As far as I know it is not possible to put an actual item into the contract. Its more of an agreement, than a contract I'd say. And I'd love to get that picture in there, but I can't figure it out.

You cannot include ANY item in a Freeform contract. The only features available are a price and a description.
Originally I thought they might be of use e.g. if you want someone to get something and deliver it to a particular location, but even that doesn't work - easier just to put up a private buy exchange contract at the delivery point.
The fact is that you would need to totally trust the other party to complete a freeform contract, rather than you or them clicking fail, leading to a rip-off. If you have sufficient trust in the person you're dealing with, then you don't need contracts anyway.
If anybody can show me a use for Freeform contracts, I would love to know!

They are the only in game item that you buy with RL money. The fact that you can't convert them back don't remove that cost and give them a RL money value.

It shows on your contract history. It's good for, say, corpmates to iron out an agreement that is easily viewable by anyone. They're good if you have the means to enforce penalties if he doesn't comply.
