Every time I visit the states (I'm English) the service at any restaurant or bar is atrocious and despicable. Do they hate English people or is the service always like this? And why the expected tipping on already overpriced drinks and food?

Edited by: Einar Lightfingers on 21/02/2009 04:56:02 Can't answer on the service. Depends on the area, and restaurant.
But in regards to the tipping, this is why: here in Texas, server wage is $2.15 an hour. Most, if not all, of that goes to taxes. So, servers live on tips. That's why. It's generally the same deal through-out the rest of the states, although the wage varies. _______________________ Once a BEE, always a BEE!

THey prolly hate the English for not tipping. Thats how they make their money ya'know. Some states the minimum wage for wait staff is under $3 an hour so they live off the tips.

Tipping customs are different is all. Here, tipping the barman every time he gives you a drink would be pretty crass. Like showing off.

If you don't tip, you get bad service, it's as simple as that. I don't go to a country and expect to act out of order and get away with it. Next time you visit north america, take a pamphlet from the airport and read it so you're prepared on how to behave to be treated well by the locals -

I like how the immediate response is "oh, you didn't tip".
Sometimes, you DO just get awful service. I've been visiting the states every other year for pretty much my whole life, I know what the culture's like over there. For the most part, I've always had good customer service.
Sometimes, though, you don't. Maybe the server's having a bad day, maybe you just got the grouch on staff.
One thing I noticed though, is that my accent helps. I've gotten some fantastic service over the years just from the way I speak. not to mention a fair bit of flirting. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

As a Scotsman who's visited the states several times (and we have a global reputation for being tight fisted), the only time I've ever experienced bad waiting service was at a diner somewhere near Flagstaff at 7 in the morning. I can excuse that waitress because, well, it was 7 in the ****ing morning, and who can be happy to be working then?
Otherwise my experiences of service in America far outweigh anything I've seen in the UK. So yes, in answer to your question there are two options:

I state again; if the employer decides to pay lousy wages and the workers/people/country somehow agree to that then that's their problem. IF I tip (and I do) I do so because I got exceptional service, NOT because the employer is too greedy to pay his staff. If someone gets a wage that's just stupidly low, talk to the boss, not to the customer.

Can you say "NOT GETTING IT". Its not lousy wages because they aren't lousy as soon as tips come into the equation. It means that if they really do a truely terrible job they're out most of thier pay. I also agree with the statement that you don't go to a country without following the customs there or you look like a total asswhole, again its assumed. Is it really so hard to go into a place and put aside 15% beforehand knowing that its not included in the cost here? You are paying for it on either side of the atlantic, the only difference is here you can choose not to pay for it if they're lousy.
Finally if you're getting bad service everywhere in a culture where waiters get most of thier income from tips did you ever stop and think "maybe its me?". If this post is anything to go by that's where I'd put my money. _______________

If you can show me that going to a restaurant or anywhere else where you're 'supposed' to tip has 15-20% lower base prices than on this side of the big pond then you'd have a case. I'd rather tip for good service than not tip for bad service.

In America, is it customary to tip before receiving the service? Because your logic is back to front. Service precedes the tip. So there is no need to tip after receiving bad service. Nor is there a reason to provide bad service expecting no tip, because that is exactly what happens. What is happening here is the staff are amateurs who have not yet worked out how to maximise their income.

In YOUR country its customary to tip for best of the best service.
In OUR country its customary to tip regardless unless the waiter/waitress was a real ass.
Do you see the diffrence the Y makes? What is perfectly acceptable in your country is not acceptable in our country and the sooner that concept is accepted the experience of a forigner visting another nation will be bettered. Meh, in Chicago, there's a restaurant staffers are supposed to be rude. It's kind of the niche of that restaurant. It's actually kind of fun to go there just to see what they'll do. The ruder they are the bigger tip they're supposed to get. Oh, I suppose you've also probably never been to a Hooters either. The waitresses are paid to just look pretty and flirt with the customers. Why don't you try going to one of those next time. I'm sure you'll enjoy the scenery!!!

The tip is part of the waiter/waitress wage. Most of them make less than $4 USD an hour. And many have to split that with the other people that worked that table like the bus person. If a table of people dont' tip it literally comes out of my pocket so I can pay my co-workers.

Yes, local customs are part of the problem. But to me the biggest part of the problem is what someone views as good service. Until you've worked in the service industry whether it be in food, sales, or whatever, you really have no idea the kind of crap that they have to deal with day in and day out from people. So, good customer service is all relative. What one person percieved as excellent service the next thought was simply mediocre (sure it's spelled wrong). So, until you've walked a mile in that person's shoes you really shouldn't judge them on how good their service is. Maybe your expectations are just too high. We're all entitled to good and bad days. Just remember, the nicer you are to your waiter/ waitress whatever the case may be, the better service you're gonna get. Why would they want to go above and beyond for you when you're treating them horrible right off the bat. I've worked in the food industry to help get through college. It's not fun! But, it paid the bills and at least I was working and contributing member to society. It doesn't make me any less of a human being. And whatever happened to do unto others as you'd have done unto you? So, I'm just saying, step back and put yourself in their shoes for a bit.

Tell you what, you dont like the customs of a particular nation, dont visit it. Problem solved for everyone. If you cant spend five minutes to check the local customs of a nation, any nation, on the net and cant be willing to obsurve them, spend money when you have already spent alot to visit said nation in the first place then stay in your nation, in your pub, drinking your beer, eating your local dishes and enjoying your local customs because you sure as hell dont want to try another nations culture.

How about you stop being a ****?
They're a human just like you, and you should respect them. Why do you want to be a ***** to them? Honestly? What have they done to you? Tried to bring you drinks, serve you food? Why not be nice to them, and then it's a lot nicer for them to be nice to you. *****. If they're not being as nice to you as you think the should be, don't counter with being rude, just be nice to them. They're probably sterotyping you as a foreign bad tipper, but if you're nice to them, they might think that you'll actually pay them what they should get. Not that you will anyways, because obviously you're still a giant ****ing douchebag.
If you don't want to accept local customs, don't travel. Period. Not everywhere in the world thinks the same way you do. I don't know why you're in your own thread *****ing and moaning about this, because it's a FACT OF LIFE. GET OVER IT.

The only brits people ever seem to notice are the loudmouthed chavs, boy-racers, football hooligans and the posh, snobby tuxedo-wearing businesspeople.
Yes many brits could do some research on local customs and actually tip (Most don't because they just arn't aware of it) but at the same time to give them terrible service just because you've figured from their accent that they're not likely to tip or to some prejudice (like what happened to the OP by the sounds of things) and making them feel as unwelcome as possible dosen't exactly help relations either.

okay, from the British perspective, a tip is something you earn, not something that's automatic. The guys who deliver pizza in this country don't expect a tip, though I tend to give one anyway if they turn up fast and I'm doing okay financially.
There's a logical flaw to the American attitude, as a brit sees it. You say "they don't get paid well, so tips are what they live off"
We say "Then they should lobby for better pay, and treat the tips as a bonus".
Of course, the customs are so firmly entrenched on both sides of the pond that neither side can really pursuade the other. From each of our perspectives, it's perfectly logical for the world to operate that way.
So stop arguing that the custom's stupid, already. A custom is a custom, and a few sharp words on the internet aren't about to shift the perspectives of nations. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

Isn't the whole ****ing idea of going to another country to sample other CUSTOMS and CULTURE?????
Not just to land on a land mass and say in a proud British idiot voice "IV BEN DAAR"

This topic has come up before about bar tenders and tips. I did a little research and asked all the bar tenders I know, which is more then 30. Close to 100% of them new about the European customs of tipping and new what to expect and how to better ensure that a European would tip. I know fewer servers but I can also tell you that a majority of them did not know about European tipping customs.
Here is what you do when you eat in a restaurant in the US.
- 10-15% is acceptable if you were satisfied with the service
- 20+% if the service is exceptional.
- 0-10% depending on how bad/jaded the server was.
Some things to take in consideration when going out in the US.
- Table to server ratio. If you notice that a server is working more then 4 tables you should expect slower service and not tip down for that. Unless the server is a jaded a$$.
- Time of day.
- Cleanliness of the establishment. If the place is not up to par do not expect good service. Eat, tip what you think is acceptable, or not, then leave and do not return
Outside of those. If you are a demanding a$$ and the server has had bad experiences with tourists in general, due not just expect bad service. Your best bet is to cut your losses, get, up and leave
So in conclusion. If you do not get the concept or refuse to understand how salaries and tips work in the service industry in the US, then you should either expect bad service or just not use it.
Oh yes for a little comic cultural education, for better or worse, check out the movie Waiting. This is a pretty good look at what you are speaking of.
P.S. If you are unwilling to pay a tip for whatever ****ty a$$ reason when in the states when you know the situation, then do not tip. You just better be nice and do not ever return to the same place twice.

Not our fault is it. It's yours.
I'm saying that I can already predict how much a table of people are going to tip before we even speak to them. How is that my fault that you guys refuse to leave a tip in a country where it's customary.
When I go to Europe I try to make sure to understand and learn the locals to not be such a jerk. The English seem to ****ing care less. Go back home.
Please try and respect our culture of ignoring the local's preferences and then adding them to an empire. We're trying to change but it's a slow process.
