OK, picture this. It's 1am and a lone Amarr trader decides to pick up the remainder of his wares and head back to his homeland from his last drop-off of the evening. The Amarr is happily chatting about the results of the day and which commodities to shift tomorrow with his corporation comrades. That drop-off point is in Lonetrek...the way back is through the Mara/Passari jump gate...the Amarr becomes another anonymous fluctuation in the statistics, as escape pod kills in the last 24 hours for Passari blips from 45 to 46.
Well this isn't going to be a massive whiney post, but my opinions about where Athule Snanm (primary clone) went wrong and what he might have done to survive.
Fault number one: he went to Passari. He had checked the map for pod kills, only minutes before he had been warned about the gate by a player, a while before he had passed through the same gate by accident and noticed a cloud of cargo pods - there was no excuse for being there in the first place.
Fault number two: he didn't check his autopilot route. What had happened is that he had come from the east and passed though Passeri without event. He was now heading west and didn't realise where the autopilot was taking him as he was too 'busy' chatting. In fact it was taking him straight through Passeri again.
Fault number three: he wasn't paying attention. This is what killed him. Only when he saw the M0o pirates did he glance at the system name. The moment he entered the system he should have turned back.
Fault number four: he chose to run for the gate. He saw the yellow threat warning for the pirates and never having been warp jammed in the past he panicked. He had (thankfully Athule Snanm, primary, had invested in a high quality clone so the next Athule Snanm to ply the spaceways will still have) Starship Command 5 and Evasive Maneuvres 3. He could have turned almost instantly and warped (and has done in the past). In retrospect Athule Snanm probably hadn't been warp jammed as no jamming warning came up.
Fault number 5: He was going slow. Foolishly he had removed his overdrive injectors to fit in a few extra harvester drones to take back to Amarr territory. As a result he was only going at 300m/s with 3 LiFs active. As it was, his shield booster kept him alive to with 15km of the gate. Those overdrives may (although of course it still would have been lucky) have got him to the gate in time.
So with all these faults, Athule Snanm (primary clone)'s fate was sealed. The actual encounter was rather like being attacked by pirate drones, no communication or taunts before or after being ship evicted or pod killed. Ho hum. As trading was done for the day the only serious loss was that of the LiFs and cargo expanders, but these can be easily replaced. On the plus side it did take me to where I was going anyway, and saved me a 41 hop trip. Maybe M0o are actually Interbus gone rogue?
Hopefully that rundown of events will help at least one other person survive. Or at least fill in the facts for one of those anonymous pod kill statistics.

Good advice.
It seems your second clone is smarter than the first. ;D

I agree. Clones are cheap. Add insurance and u have interbus. Actually, it is cheaper than a proper interbus service.

What sort of speed do you need to be looking at (sans MWD) to make that jumpgate before the crap hits ?

Yeah. How do they do it these days? Are they camping further away from the gates to avoid the sentrys or aren't there any sentrys at that particular gate?

I am sorry Athule. I suspect that I was the player that warned you after you dropped off the Harvester delivery. I may not have been emphatic enough to adequately alert you.
Your closing comment of a "!", seemed to imply you had gotten adequate warning. With a bit more discussion, I probably would have concluded they were on the outbound gate instead of the inbound gate that you saw first.
Good fortune and best luck next time.

Mara is .42 sec rating space. I haven't gone to see for myself whether or not there are sentry guns there. But my understanding is there wouldn't be gate guns in space with ratings that low.

Be careful out there. That other guy waiting in the queue for the gate MIGHT be a baby-munching frock-burner, YOU JUST DON'T KNOW!- Lallante |

Some of us smarter pilots have bookmarked warp points which take us right next to the jumpgate and don't use autopilot. I jump instantly as soon as I come out of warp.
I have a good system so I don't lag from containers which helps.
I usually go through Mara/Passari to reach hunting grounds from our factory and back again.
I still won't even consider lugging cargo through the area though.

In perusing the oldest forum posts, I came upon this particular thread, and thought it was an excellent one to re-hash.
As the Eve systems become more advanced, and students more plentiful, it is always a good idea to re-hash the good ol' basics of space-faring.
So, students, remember the lesson I taught on the second day of class? Bookmark spots next to jump-gates, just as this fellow does, and you stand a greater chance of escaping alive.
