Many hardware companies like to benchmark their products against popular games people play. Considering the unique nature that EVE is built on with it's wide range of coding languages, it makes it a prime platform for a custom benchmarking suite.
I would imagine that if there were an EVE Online benchmarking program that ran tests of the carbon tech all the way through to simulating large fleet fights on our computers that the data collected would not only benefit us, but CCP as well.
A 'scoreboard' of who's got the best computer for EVE could be kept (as well as system specs etc) similar to the one futuremark has. This game has the potential to stress test just about every aspect of a computer and the data collection would be invaluable to the future development of this game.
Not to mention, if it gets momentum in the hardware community, it would be awesome advertisement.

I wouldn't be completely against it, but it would probably be very difficult to create a "useful" benchmark for eve.

If it is one of those things that a developer do on their "R&D Fridays" or whatever they call it, sure. My preference would be for something done to EVE that is a bit more useful in terms of the game ... EVE Ambulation and Avatars as a separate game - see here |

Press CTRL-F and spin a ship in a station or walk around with your avatar.
Other than this is there little you can do to get a comparable result of the client, because too much depends on the number of objects and players in space. You would need your own stand-alone EVE server and private network to cancel out all the odds of the Internet and the MMO itself. |

I think the suggestion is that a standard benchmark should be introduced.
So a predictable and scripted sequence with a preset number of ships, drones etc. This would be useful for comparing performance, but probably not particularly useful for determining where bottlenecks or issues are actually occurring.
A set of multiple different benchmarks would need to be introduced for that purpose, featuring different things in each. E.g. one with large numbers of drones, one with gas clouds, one with large numbers of varying ship models etc.
Personally I'm not certain the hassle of development would be worth the gain, Eve does not currently have a particularly amazing graphical engine (in terms of visuals, it's performance is brilliant) and releasing a benchmark would probably be seen as a bit of a joke in enthusiast circles.

Some of the greatest issues with EVE right now is the client itself. Veritas has admitted himself this and that it's the priority for the future development.
If CCP plans on developing other games with the tech they're building in EVE, from a development standpoint, they'd be selling themselves short not to have a custom benchmark tool.
