only 3 lasers, better then 5.
more cargo space.
cheaper.
Osprey is useless for everything else, makes a lot of sense it being a good miner. :) great update! ----------

It gets even more interesting. With Mining V and Astrogeology V, the Ospry can pull 11 units of Ark per laser, per minute, or 33 units a pass. When you consider an Armaghedon can pull only 35 units with capped skills, per unit cost, the Ospry is a more cost effecive miner than even many battleships.

And less likely to cause wailing and gnashing of teeth when it goes boom in a low sec system.
For the price of one battleship, you can field half a dozen "disposable" cruisers, and escorts to go with them.
And besides... the thing *looks* like a black & decker hand vac.

half a dozen? hell, more like 3 dozen!!!!
I just got 1 today, first just because my little probe couldnt handle all the npcs biting him whenever he tried to collect loot. My fun little osprey (a bird in a face down ass up position, i like to call him), can take a few more minutes of beatings from the rats :D, plus im using him to do some simple mining. haha.. and it does look like an allright ship, takes some getting use to though :D

The Osprey only has a 200 capacity drone bay, so you can't use as many mining drones, or heavies for defence. It all balances out in the end.

Can someone clarify one little thing for me? If I have the Scythe with 3 miner IIs and level 4 Minmatar Cruiser, is the bonus of 80% applied per laser or per total yield? Because if it's per laser then it's rather sexy, but if per total, then it's only 80% of a miner II... hence less then 4 miner IIs

an extra 80% of 3 miner IIs would allow you to mine assuming Mining lvl IV, 129.6m3 per miner II, and 388.8m3 per minute with all 3 lasers. Compare that to 216m3 for all 3 lasers without the bonus. ................. |

imho this is a great bonus to give to the osprey and scythe which are otherwise worthless pretty much. Now they are great mining ships...
And the other races also get good mining ships!
The vexor now gets an extra drone per level so if you use good mining drones you get a nice bonus aswell...so does the arbitrator!
I think this was a very needed boost which has accentuated the strong spots of all the specific cruisers very nicely
Originally by: cashman It's time for Eris to get a clue. CCP should make a statement about this.
It's the exact same things as what Zombie did, you may not attack in "safe-areas" (empire/within sentry range) without loosing your ship.

In real money, that's 645 units of omber/minute, which works out at the equivalent of 5.4 (rounded up) miner 2s.

Say what? The Osprey has a 400m3 drone bay, not 200, thus fields only 2 less drones that the Thorax. Also the Scythe will porbably make a better high risk miner, as it can pack 2 Missile launchers to make attackers leave you be to the Osprey's 1, and its also quicker, thus better to run away with.

Gallente has the Thorax Minmater.. uh.. the scyth or whatever Ammar has that drone ship Caldari has the Osprey
edit:
I also want to mention. I was forced to train gallente skills for the thorax. I wanted to stick to mainly Caldari ships but I couldn't pass up the thorax as a miner. I'm soo happy I can fly a Caldari ship for mining :D ----------

I'd say that is the Exequror. Fitting 4 miner 2s, one co processor and two expander 1s, you have a 1056m3 cargo bay.. less ore per minuite than the osprey or scythe, but a lot fewer trips back.

The point where the Scythe (Santa's Sleigh) and the Osprey (Hoover Vac) start beating the Thorax seems to be Mining 5, Astro 4, and Cruiser 3, or Mining 4, Astro 4, and Cruiser 4. I was sucking up 920 units of scord per pull last night in my Scythe.
Working on getting Astro up to 4 then I will be good to go. It only cost me 2.9mill as well. Better miner, cheaper cost, I'll keep mining in my Scythe.

Although I don't mine at all (mining lvl2 ) it's pretty obvious that an added benefit to using an osprey with the bonus is that you save on a lot of capacitor compared to using 5 without the bonus |

The Ospry and Scyth are not going to break 3m. They are simply to cheap to manufacture for the price to stay that high for that long. Especially since neither of them require large amounts of Megacyte or Zydrine.

I'd say that is the Exequror. Fitting 4 miner 2s, one co processor and two expander 1s, you have a 1056m3 cargo bay.. less ore per minuite than the osprey or scythe, but a lot fewer trips back.
I stuck some beta hulls on my osprey and ive got abou 983m3 of space, a little lower then the exequror, but still not too shabby.
I did not realize the exequror had that much cargo space though... dang -------------------------------------------- I've had the same Gurista Imputor on my tail for the past 16 systems..
2004.08.16 21:38:37 - Combat: Your 250mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes Blood Sage, wrecking for 324.9 damage.

Can anyone say 5mil isk cruiser?
Figures...
That is why I bought my Osprey two weeks ago when fist hearing of the proposed changes. Only cost me ~2.6 mil IIRC (still stuck on the market before whoever had it up could pull it and change it).
And an easier way to think about the percent bonus it to think of a mining laser on most other ships equals 1. A mining laser on an Osprey with Cruiser Level-4 trained (80% bonus) equals 1.8 mining lasers. So three of those equals 5.4 mining lasers effectively (in that situation).

Stick some beta hull mods on a exeq and it will be even greater. I calculated that using Cargo expanders 1... I'm not sure what the exact % of beta hull mods are, (i think 24.2%?) but... assuming you use 2 beta hull mods, and 1 co processor so you can use 4 miner 2s, you get 1291.5 cargo bay..
