Hello everyone. Soeey in advance for the wall of text .
I'm training my character on the path towards becoming a small ship PvP pilot, focusing on Interceptors and Assaulth Frigates, and the only ship I can fly atm that is above Frigate size would be Industrials.
For ISK-gathering, so far I've mainly ratting & salvaging in highsec (usually .5) with a T2 fitted Taranis (I would never risk using it in PvP yet, since my skills are to low for that yet and the losses would cut to deeply into my funds). Besides that I also do some semi-afk mining in an industrial when I can't actively play, or do some trading/hauling in it when I have time to play but don't feel like ratting. I also do some PvP once in a while in expendable T1 Frigs.
Now, I've been considering to start ratting in Lowsec instead for the increased profits and added fun factor of having to watch my back. However I definatley don't want to do that in a T2 fitted Taranis (Or Ishkur) since the axtra ISK income definatley isn't worth the risk of losing ships (+fittings) of that cost, combined with the fact that people will most likely assume I'm out there for PvP if I fly one of those.
And I assume that a T1 frig would not cut it against pirates in Lowsec (Or am I wrong about that?). So, I am considering getting a Cruiser (Since I hear Destroyers aren't very good) and using that instead (which would also have the added benefit of a bigger cargocapacity than the tiny one my Taranis has).
Now, here is my dilemma. I don't want to sway to long from my curent skill-plan and invest a lot into the Cruiser and Medium Turret skills. So, would my general Drone, Navigation & Gunnery skills (Like sharpshooter for instance) allow me to Rat decently (Roughly as effectively as I do in a Taranis, for instance) with just a couple of levels into the skills that would be specific for the Cruiser (The skills that would have no benefit for my Frigates)?
Also, if it would be possible, what Gallente Cruiser would you recommend for this purpose?
Thankfull for any replies .

Skip losec.
Go all the way to 0.0, for example in NRDS Providence, and fly a Vexor with T2 drones against single BS spawns.

Okay, thanks for the advice . I was actually just sitting and looking at the Vexor in the item database, thinking that it looked like the best option for me .

You don't need to skip lowsec. Lowsec cosmic anomalies (deadspaces you can find with your ship scanner around planets) can be very profitable and offer a high chance of faction loot.
Also, with Apocrypha, battleship-sized rats will be added to lowsec, increasing profit significantly from normal, run-of-the-mill ratting
Read this, full of good ways to survive in lowsec
As far as ship classes:
A t1 frig if flown well is very good at ratting in lowsec. The frigate rats die and the cruiser ones can't really touch you if you manage your angular velocity. Destroys aren't "bad", but they're more for blazing through level 1 missions/popping frigates in PVP than ratting.
You'll may need a cruiser (maybe even friends/a BC depending on the site) for the cosmic anomalies. They're pretty nasty in most cases, although an assault frig also works.

Edited by: Dalacha on 02/03/2009 04:25:40 Another big thanks for the advice . I read that guide a while back, but it was definatley worth a re-read.
I'll try doing some Lowsec ratting with an Incursus when I get home from work, it would be nice if I could skip the Cruiser de-tour, so I can keep focusing on my essential skills. Though the Cosmic anomalies sounds interesting as well. I might give it a shot in an Ishkur if I feal like taking a fun risk (Though I will most likely wait a little bit to get my skills up higher for a tough encounter like that).

There's no reason not to use a nice AF for ratting in low sec (especially with the above mentioned changes real soon). Your 'problem' is thinking about issues WHEN you are caught and thus go "well, T1 is cheaper to lose", but that means you're not thinking about this the right way. Your defense is not your ship or it's pvp abilities, your defense is not getting caught in the first place.
- keep an eye on local - never rat/be near the center of the belt if there's someone in your system - always KNOW your exit strategy, if you have to figure out which celestial to click to warp to AS someone warps in or uncloaks you're too late - if someone enters run your scanner every second to see what's happening and already start aligning towards a celestial - if something shows up on scanner react accordingly;if it's a BS you don't care as it's lock time will give you enough time to get out, if it's a recon/T2 cruiser you DO care. If nothing shows up after a while and he's still in system your paranoia should take over and realise he's in a cloaker
Getting caught in a frigate in lowsec is a choice because if you wanted to it could be avoided.

You will take a standing hit with what ever faction you shoot at though, or so I have heard. Also I have never seen any faction loot drop while running plex's.

He's not talking about faction warfare bunkers; rather, the actual exploration-lite complexes (against pirate factions/rogue drones) that one can also find with the onboard scanner.

Hmmm, that's actually a very good point Tzar'rim. I think my new plan will be to give ratting in lowsec a try on an Incursus (if it works well) and start practicing escaping any incoming hostilities. Then when I've had some practice and feel comfortable with it, I'll switch to an Attack Frigate.
Oh, and on a second note, I've been reading the forums for quite a while now, and I have to say that I really like the image in your signature. One of the best looking ones I've seen on any forum. Did you make it yourself? Would you mind if I borrow some inspiration from it when/if I make mine ? (Mainly as in the shape of it, I like the idea of not using a normal rectangle like most sigs have).

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 02/03/2009 10:46:38 Yes, get some practise first ofcourse. But again, an AF is ideal for low sec ratting when they bring out the new rats, although not entirely sure the Ihskur will be the most ideal due to drones needing time to be reeled in when you need to warp off.
The sig certainly wasn't done by me, it was done by someone from EVE-GFX named Jaerl, that site is fully dedicated to people willing to make signatures for Isk. I'm actually thinking of getting a new one due to this one having the old graphics still. Already tried to contact of them but but he hasn't replied yet.

That's a good point about the Drones. I was planning to only focusing on Gallente ships though (atleast during the nearest future, I might look into getting ships from other races when I've gotten my other skills where I want them though). Perhaps the Enyo would be better suited for it? Or even a Taranis?
Then again, loosing soem drones would be a small price to pay compared to loosing the whole ship and fittings I guess .
And okay about the sig. Still think it's one very nice sig though. I prefer to make my own sigs myself (Not saying I'm that good, but since I love playing aruond in Photoshop, I usually like to make my own sigs on forums).
And thanks again for all the good advice =).

For ratting you want to be cap stable under repping and ideally fit an AB and have that perma run (to lower your time to get to a target, less time under low transversal). For running away you want to have an MWD, so it all depends a bit. If you're relatively safe I'd opt for an AB.
Taranis in permarep form doesn't do a whole lot of damage, the Enyo does tons more but it's slower and slower to align. I'd prefer the Enyo for it though. Best ratter by far (if you don't count the Enyo) is the Retribution as it doesn't use ammo, has an amazing tank and does good dps. Ofcourse it all depends on the damage types and I wouldn't want to train amarr JUST because their AF is great for PVE (as it stinks for pvp).

Edited by: Dalacha on 02/03/2009 12:06:34 Hmmm, seems like a tough descision.
As you said, training an Amarr ship just for PvE doesn't sound like a good option. My main goal is to train to become profficent in using Gallente Interceptors and AF's for PvP, with ratting as a way to earn ISK to fund the PvP, so I would definatley prefer to be able to use one of those ships for the ratting.
How slow would the Enyo be to align? To slow to avoid an incomming player? And would the Ishkur have the same problem? If the Enyo would be to slow at aligning while the Ishkur would have an easier time aligning quickly, then perhaps I should go for using that even if it means I have to take an ISK hit and sacrifice some drones when someone is warping in on me (In the end, the income should still be higher than the losses, right?)

I'd suggest Costolle - it's only a couple jumps from Hevrice and *everyone* seems to be hanging out there these days.
On a more serious note - if you do get into lowsec ratting / cosmic anomolies, stay the hell out of the FW regions, unless you're hoping to fund pewpew with your ratting, which, especially after M10, seems like it would be possible without too many issues.

AF's generally need around 4-5 seconds to align, inties about 2-3. There is no real difference between an ishkur and an enyo and as the enyo doesn't care about it's drones too much it's less of a hassle if you have to haul arse. Coupled with the fact that an ishkur still uses turrets and thus uses up ammo (would it be able to do proper damage with drones only it'd be great) The Enyo is the better choice.
I'd probably use something like this;
Quote: [Enyo, New Setup 1] Small Armor Repairer II Capacitor Power Relay II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
1MN Afterburner II Cap Recharger II
Light Neutron Blaster II, Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot]
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
Hobgoblin II x1
It can't really permarun but it gets damn close to it, even more as your guns won't be on all the time anyway. If your skills can't match that capwise, replace a magstab with another CPR or just live with it and work around it.

I haven't actually decided completley yet what kind of PvP I'll be doing, I gues I'll try out different types and see what I like . But yeah, I definatley plan to stay away from FW regions hehe.

Thanks a ton! I really love that Enyo setup (Then again, I'm a noob, what do I know ). I did have to switch out one of the Magstabs, but as I mentioned before, I still have a bit to go before I can fly either an Inty or AF really effectively, but I'm working my way towards it, one skillpoint at a time . But, as I do need some practice just ratting in lowsec and getting a hang of just keeping from getting killed there, I don't mind waiting a bit .
