Caldari Caldari Provisions

I just came back, and I have about 4.5 million sp, most in Spaceship command. Before I quit, I was a miner/mission runner and I had enjoyed the mission running. However, I have new long term goals of getting into some corp pvp. I am worried that investing all my training into Caldari ships will be a waste if my long term goals are centered around pvp. I have the skills to FLY a Myrm, but not the skills to fit it decently. Am I just being silly thinking that caldari isn't the right path for me, or should I cross train to another race? Thanks in advance!

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 02/03/2009 01:13:14 Caldari are really geared towards gang fights and don't have "good" solo options. There are some ships that are at least viable solo like the Merlin, Drake, blaster Moa, blaster Ferox, and the assault frigates. And even these are outshined by ships from other races. Cerberus and blaster Eagle can also do the job but again there are better options.
But just because these aren't good doesn't make them bad, necessarily. You just have to really know how to pick your fights. If you want to do gang PvP on the other hand then any Caldari combat ship is fine and you don't have to cross-train to someone else if you don't want to.

Good to hear that, thanks for the reply. I'm going to stick to Caldari, as I wasn't looking to get into solo pvp, but group pvp.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 02/03/2009 01:21:27 Remember though that while Caldari certainly does/can work, it's not the most optimised most of the time. Part of that is them (mostly) shield tanking, not being able to tank properly and fill midslots will kinds of good stuff and the fact that missiles have a lot of travel time long range. Again, not saying it's impossible but it's probably not helping either.
Up to you to get around the cons of your race and make it work anyway (and that is the same for all races), or to go for something more optimised. RP/background/personal preference > min-maxing imo.

Also IMO Caldari have about as many good turret ships as missile ships when it comes to PvP-capable craft. Training up gunnery before missiles is a good thing to at least consider if you're going to PvP with Caldari. It will also allow you to train over to Gallente that much faster if the mood strikes you.
Caldari turret ships fit for PvP: Merlin Raptor Harpy Moa Ferox Vulture Eagle Rokh
Caldari missile ships fit for PvP: Kestrel Manticore Crow Caracal Drake Rook Cerberus Nighthawk Scorpion Raven
Falcon uses missiles but... I mean you know. ECM range and all that.

If you can fly a Blackbird with ECM modules, there's a spot for you in just about any small gang.
If you can fly a Falcon, there's a spot for you in any gang.

I'm personally training up to use a Rokh eventually. It should work fine as a sniper long range artillery boat in big fleet battles so I don't see an issue with Caldari.
For missions I don't see the problem with skilling up to Drake with heavies and then working on the Rokh/Gunnery skills while you rake in some mission cash.
Hope this helps.
