Hi.
I would very much like the ability to change the name of my characters. (One, in particular )
In my case, the name I chose for this character was completely random. I never intended to play EVE for more than a few days so I didn't give it much thought. Five years later I'm still around, very much wishing I had thought this through.
I've seen this sort of feature in... other games, where the online account management offers a payed for service to alter player names. A lot more entertaining idea would be to offer an in-game service, something like a "witness-protection" agent that, for a modest amount of ISK, would give you a new identity.
Any chance of seeing something like this implemented?
Thanks.

Unlikely and I for one would only welcome the option of name change for character sales.
When a character is sold, the buyer should have the option to wipe it completely. New name, reset of all standings to 0, removal from all buddylists and standings lists and reset of all datacenters, tutorials and COSMOS missions. Only if the character is transfered from one player to another. Not from one player's account to another account of the same player.

Without meaning to sound nasty, you're not the only one that has thought of this. There have been long and lengthy discussions on it in the past, please have a search.
In this day and age there are very few truly original ideas, so it's best to search as much as you can before hand.

@J'Mkarr Soban Agreed. I did actually spend a while searching the forums. I even went through the list of common ideas in the sticky. I found nothing. Perhaps I was simply using the incorrect search parameters.
@Miska Tecam Could you explain the reason why you wouldn't want people to change their names?
Personally, I see no reason why this would affect the other players. Assuming that EVE is based on solid databases (which I think is a pretty fair assumption), the name change itself should branch up into buddy-lists, market orders and such without any problems.
It shouldn't even be to difficult to have searches for the old name redirect to the new name. (Although, that might be overkill)

Not overkill, it's necessary because in Eve, your reputation is everything. If you turn into a known corp thief then you're not going to be allowed into many corps. Being able to change your name would completely change how the game is played. You will see a large rise in corp theft and griefing if you are allowed to change your name without being able to easily see what your other names have been. ------------------------------------

Good point. I had not thought of that aspect. There would have to be a way to know previous names. Perhaps some sort of an alias list, similar to employment history.

No, seriously. I want to change my mains name so badly - Eve was my first real MMO, so it's kinda crappy.

It's not CCPs fault if you didn't think about it BEFORE you created the character...
Also, don't buy characters with crappy names, if you don't like it - don't buy it!
The ability to change name is way too lame to be introduced just because of a bunch of people that give silly names.
Do not try and find the signature... that's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth... There is no signature. |

so you mean i can greif people for a whole 12 months and then avoid all the consiquences? radical!
...or not.
not everyone bookmarks their enemys. you need to know, on sight, without having to right click on the overview and go through their info page, who people are.
name changes would completely derail everything eve stands for.
if you chose a bad name, you were a fool. learn from your mistake and dont do it again next time.

The ability to kill whole Fleets of Ships with one Shot is way to lame to be introduced just because of a bunch of People could build those Fortresses, yet CCP installed them.

I agree that ability to change character name should be allowed. Don't delete the old name, link it to new name, place that old name in character's info so everybody could see it. Make the change work only one time. Personally I don't need it, because I was registering in EVE knowing what I do. I spend a year reading articles and forums about EVE, I knew I'm going to play it long and spent an hour upon registering thinking every step through. Many people just try it and then decide to play it. Like the OP for example, I understand why he want's to change his character name :)

I like the one-time-only thing. Would prevent griefers and such from repeatedly using this to hide themselves.
@Ryuga VonRhaiden I never blamed CCP. I simply asked if they would allow those of us who made these mistakes to correct them.
@Sir Substance There won't be a next time for me. At least not in EVE. I don't plan to spend another 5 years training a new character up to my current level, simply to change my name.
