First patch incorrectly says: 75883-84244. In reality it actually is the 75883-83913 big patch. Install that one first, and then after that is done patching, download and run the second patch labeled: 83913-84244

I'm requesting some links for ATI drivers to include in the top post. As an nvidia head, I'm not as familiar with driver download locations/updates other than AMD's main ATI site. If there any other locations worth linking, please post the replies here and I'll get them into the top info post.
Thanks in advance,

Edited by: Doublewhopper on 14/03/2009 11:53:00 Patching and compiling wine:
1.) Get wine-1.1.17 source and the appropriate patch from this thread: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17437
2.) Extract wine: tar xvfj wine-1.1.17.bz2
3.) Copy patch to wine-1.1.17 directory and patch there: patch -p1 < apocrypha.shaders.1.1.17.patch
4.) Compile and install wine (compile as user and install as root) ./configure make depend make make install
4a.) get all dependencies that are missing and are causing ./configure to fail to run through (most work intensive part for the first time compilation), then try ./configure again until all is satisfied

64-bit users may have trouble following these instructions. To compile wine 32-bit on a 64-bit system, follow the instructions on: http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit
From their web page: wget http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/install-wine-deps.sh sudo sh install-wine-deps.sh
This will ix your dependency problems.

Many thanks for the info, but for those of us who've never compiled anything (me, for one!), could you expand on the above please? At which point do you need to switch to root? And for Ubuntu users, will sudo be sufficient, or will we need to sudo su?

First off, is there actually a NEED to compile? If you need the patch to wine, then yes, I see it, but for the rest, just following the link in the sticky above to eveaholic's site and follow the directions for ubuntu oughta' get you going just fine.
Now if you DO need to, here is the sequence:
FIRST and MOST important! See this link: Recommended packages! This has a script file (.sh) for ubuntu depending on distribution. (iirc this needs sudo to run the script properly, but it will get EVERYTHING you need to compile wine in one big swoop. Not wine itself, but all of the things that ./configure will whine about during the first step.)
I cannot stress enough to get THIS FIRST if you are going to compile wine from source or git!!!!!!!!
Now, when all that is done, and you've got the source extracted to a wine-xxx directory change to that directory and do this after you've applied the patch you want to the source.
./configure (in the downloaded source wine directory) (NO ROOT, NO SUDO!)
make depend && make (one line does both and again: NO ROOT!, NO SUDO!) go have coffee and dinner on this part.
Last: sudo make install (here you need sudo so that wine can place the usr/bin files in their proper places. It is the ONLY place you need to do a sudo (for ubuntu) or SU/ROOT for other distros.

Thank you, Sevarus, and yes, there is need - else I would not have asked. At the moment it's looking likely that if patching Wine doesn't work, then EVE will remain unplayable on my system, in which case I'll simply take a break from EVE for a while before trying again, from a fresh install.

We're all a little bit upset about this, but I *think* the main reason why they dropped linux support was probably because Transgaming wasn't doing their job. They kept them on board for a year past their deadline, and still no premium client on Cedega. So, anyway, your anger would probably be best directed at the TG team.

The reason was simply that no one was actually using the official Cedega based client, because it just sucked. Some examples are: regular crashes, many graphical glitches (e.g. the map browser showed junk), no unicode support, no clipboard support, and, at last: no premium content.
Linux users, who tried the official client (including me), replaced it quickly by wine and the regular windows client, as this combination just worked better. I fully understand and support CCP's decision, I'm even glad that Transgaming isn't getting any more money for their crap. They took the Wine code, made it closed source, added functionality and sold it as their very own product. That was absolutely legal, as the Wine license permitted it, but they never gave back anything to the Wine project, neither money from their revenues nor their code enhancements, and that led to a license switch by the Wine devs to the GNU GPL. After that change, Transgaming couldn't legally take any new code from the Wine project, and that's why Cedega is far behind the current Wine features.
We all know that porting EVE to OpenGL and other platforms is more than a huge project, since they need to almost rewrite the whole client from scratch. And, als already said by CCP officals, making sure that every new EVE version is working with all Wine version in use out there is unmanageable. That's something WE as the community should take in our hands by reporting bugs and regressions to the wine devs, and help them fixing them.

I had the same problem, both with auto-update and when i downloaded the 85476 patch manually. I also tried both "evepremiumpatch84609-85476.exe" and "evepremiumpatch84609-85476_m.exe"
FYI: i use gentoo 2.6.24-r8, nvidia drivers 180.37 (geforce6200) and wine 1.1.16

It was suggested in the ingame linux-channel that you should try to set your windows version in winecfg to xp.
Maybe you could play around with that version a little :P

Pssst, TeamSpeak 2 also works in Wine. Use that instead of the Linux client (which has horrible...and I mean HORRIBLE, sound quality). Push-to-talk functions inside of EVE or with any wine-based application open, but doesn't work with Linux apps focused. The Vent hack doesn't seem to work with TS (even though someone said it does).
Meh...I'm still fighting with the damn thing. ATI drivers suck when it comes to getting this game working. First it'd freeze my entire display forcing a reboot, then it would hang, then I finally got in with a black environment and errors flooding. It seems I have the worst of luck. *Compiles wine with another patch for the 3rd time* Obviously what I say isn't always what my alliance thinks. I hate to break it to you, but this is in fact my signature. |

The channel setting of Delayed member listing is annoying. Would be nice to have Immediate mode back again.
I presume that's something an operator can change.
