Newflash, this just in: You can't just stuff an 8800 into a videocard slot and expect it to work. Most of these people have computers that either feature agp or onboard.

then that is a clue that you need a new gaming machine
Because everyone can just splash out for a new computer every time they update shader models. While the card is indeed, a piece of history, buying a whole new machine is a rather large undertaking for the uninitiated.

The majority of people that shader model 1 loss affected, are people that don't understand the significance of it; CCP explained it poorly to them.
What they should have done is added a message on logon for users with non-sm2 cards telling them the apoc update would not allow them to play.

Name one game today that will run on an 8 year old card that is still mainstream today! Considering that, CCP has gone above and beyond by supporting the classic client for as long as they did. I've seen computers at the gargabe dump that support SM2! Go cash your welfare check and buy a new video card.
Counterstrike, teamfortress, infantry, quake 3, battlefield 1942 ..... another good mention is World of warcraft, 8 million players or something, yes?

All of the initial FPS games you mentioned are as old as the hardware you're talking about. Simply because they have withstood the test of time well does not mean they are comparable to modern mainstream releases. I played Warcraft for several years and if Blizzard had released expansions like the ones CCP do, then I would probably have no reason to visit this board.
No one said the games mentioned had to be new. It's obvious they're not SM4.0 games.
edit: SM3.0 can run roughly double the instructions of SM2.0; its awfully slow compared sadly.

If you would like to be left in the dust with those games then so be it. Go play them. By the way, counter strike Source, the newer one, has replaced the original for all but the poorest players.
http://unity3d.com/webplayer/hwstats/pages/web-2008Q3-shadergen.html looks like about 2% of the people that play games use SM1 still. SM1 is the 8 track of computer gaming.
that right? well guess what; counterstrike source works on shader model 1.1

Just happens to be that it's not very hard to find an AGP card with Pixel Shader 3.0 support either, and for a VERY little cost, if you even want to go as far as second hand you can get a gcard to play this game very well for as little as 10$.
The ones who are in trouble however is peoples playing on laptops. There is very little they can do in the end.
Both very true; but i'm not speaking for myself. I'm running a mid (low now) 8600. expecting people to know what shader models and agp cards are in gaming is a stretch imo.

laptops work fine for gaming; my friends have been doing it for years. just make sure the laptop you buy has a videocard, just like a desktop. its not any different.
