Using torrents not seeded by CCP is stupid.
Not seeding torrets is a bit odd on CCP's behalf also.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

I downloaded the full manual patch from CCP directly. Then put that in ~/Downloads and started Transmission with the .torrent from eve-files. The file checked out fine and started seeding. --

4.4 kb/sec......**** yeah dialup. At this rate I'll be able to play sometime before the next expansion comes out. Currently stealing internet from a local coffee house, though, so it'll be more like 2 and a half hours. Sure would've been nice if some of the files would've been available for download sooner, though...would be nice for those who don't have high speed. ---

If it is, then CCP is hosting the virus themselves. That's the manual download that the installer should've properly linked to instead of the autopatcher. ---

~1050 - 1100 KB/s over here in Southern California. Max is about 1.2 MB/s.
Keep up the good work CCP - you're handling this much better than Valve did with their free UT3 weekend :)

The point of torrent is that you get what you give not get what you refuse to give back... if the torrent system is as smart as i believe than you earn what you give.

Makes you wonder why they haven't issued a patch at least 3 days ago and then a small download on patch day to fix/correct/ammend that. Surely such excellent programmers can manage that??

Contrary to popoular opinion, Eve does not control the Internet, your ISP, or much of anything else. Clearly the problem lies somewhere between you and CCP, I'm updating 2 clients at 500k/sec which is about my max download speed of 1meg/sec, so props to CCP for having the bandwidth.
The only fight worth fighting is the one you should lose. |

Originally by: Tobias Sjodin Think about it for a second. [...] Now normally the bittorrent technology should work around this, and make the download actually faster when lots of people grab a file at the same time - but for some reason it's going slow as hell. =P
Misconception. You need to think about these things for more than a second, they are not that simple. Every byte downloaded from a torrent had to be uploaded from somewhere. You cannot, even in theory, download faster than the upload rate. So the total download time for all users combined is capped at the totality of the upload time. In practice total time spent downloading will take longer than the uploading since packets hit choke points, such as that in your ISP's rather large output queue (the WAN equivalent of Jita).
Torrents are useful because they load balance the uploading by spreading it across many sources. Initially there is only the original source file but over time many more copies of it become available and thus downloading will speed up. As downloads are completed and files deseeded the download speeds decrease again. You should think of torrent speeds as something of a bell-shaped curve. When they are first seeded downloads are no faster than uploads since there is only one source. Then it speeds up, peaking when the majority of people are downloading, and finally drops off as people acquire the file and remove it from their torrents.
In general torrent download speeds are fastest about half-way through the torrent's lifetime. In this case it would be about two three days - i.e. at about the same time as direct-from-eve speeds will improve. You can help bring forward this time by setting your own torrent upload speeds as high as you can, around 80% of your maximum upstream bandwidth is a good rule of thumb.
Either way, you're not going to get it much quicker today.

It also doesn't help that the RIAA has convinced many US ISPs that torrents are only used for piracy and have 'encouraged' said ISPs to throttle P2P traffic (sadly this not only affects honest users, it affects a few other services as well) -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

The lag isn't that terrible, honestly. I can hear and speak on voice comms, and the only time I've ever experienced any terrible lag is in huge fleet battles. EVE is one of the only MMOs that I've played that actually has great support for people still using dialup.
It's not like I'm using dialup by choice, anyway. There's no high speed available where I live, so this is all that I can use (aside from that godawful HughesNet service). I just find ways to deal with the issues a slow connection brings, like stealing wireless internet to download huge patches. ---
