As some of you may have seen, Novafox, one of EVE's players, has been posting some of his/her concept art (fan art) to these forums.
With their permission, I began modeling one of the 'corvette' concepts Novafox drew. Here is my current result. Please keep in mind that it is a work in progress, by no means anywhere near finished, and is still pending notes and comments from Novafox as to the detailing and overall design of the vessel. Many of the details, you may notice, were not included in the original concept art. This is, again, due to my not having any notes to work from regarding detailing, and having taken some minor creative initiative.

looks cool. But a little too... minmatarr/caldari hybrid, I think. Maybe it's the wingy-bits. XD
But seriously ... nice work on the model.

disagree with minmatarism, thats pure caldari... or possibly pure Starcom.
either way... awesome work so far, WTB.

Edited by: Kaisa Decko on 11/03/2009 07:32:24 Nice work! Although I think one thing would make it look a lot better, and that's cutting off a big chunk of the wind screen and give it some armor instead. Right now I think it looks a little bit oversized, but still looking really great.

It's probably a bit too symmetrical to be a good Caldari ship.
Nice model, though!

This work has my blessings, any other modelers out there wanna get creative with my concept artworks to add to thier protfolio's collection can easily get my permission and support provided I get credited as original concept source and you share the end results back with me.
I will provide additional notes when but I am willing to grant you further creative use as in AnonyTerroNinjas case to make the models look more proper as I know Im not a professional concept artist and most of my drawing are not that accurate.
I will not be able to make ingame isk rewards for completing models however but ill strive to compensate players for taking time that I couldnt out of the game to do thier work.
Other than that to ATN keep up the good work. =============

Well it is an oversized fighter, but without proper scaling its hard to tell how big it is, but the best size comparison to actual eve online ships this craft center mass is about the size of the kestrels bridge area. wings of course are further out from that. =============

maybe because it was inspired by the dragonfly? I mean I did set out to make a heavy fighter gotta keep in theme. Symettry for atomspheric operations as well. The crew station section was barrowed from the 'carry all' transport ship yet to be name= they're going to be using in the planetary invasion stuff. =============

Looks very cool, and quite Caldari.
However, Corvette is kind of the wrong ship type, no? When I think Corellian (sp.?) Corvette from StarWars I think of something almost the size of a battleship.
hmm...that would almost work....Frigs and Destroyers use small modules, Cruisers and Battlecruisers use medium modules, Battleships and...wait, how about another ship size that uses large modules?

the original thread the concept work he pulled it from explained the corvettes, by naval historical standards corvettes are a class of subfrigate ships anything smaller get called weird names like scooner and clippers.
The idea with corvettes where to be pod pilotable fighters and fighter squadron leaders benifitting fighters assigned to it and getting stronger as fighters are assigned to match thier performance. Its small size makes it ideal for carrier deployments espeically in dangerous space such as wormhole space :)
I have been asked for a battleship killer class of ship but i havent put much thought into it though :( I made teir 2 and 3 destroyers and working with tech 3 battleships in my head right now and need to finish my tier 2 dreadnaughts so im busy busy busy. If you can figure a way to inspire me to design a super battleship class in a logical useful way let me know.
I hope your idea of corvette gets changed because there is no way your shoving 15000 people on a millenium falcon when the megathron rivals the Victor Class Star Destroyers or the standard ISDs in size and probably out matches it in pure firepower. =============

Edited by: AnonyTerrorNinja on 13/03/2009 13:08:20 Minor update.
Update I added a hatch and a biped to give an idea of scale. It's not the final scale, and it feels a bit too small to me as it is at the moment, but I'm thinking that for a three man ship this should be rather large.
Two would be seated on the slanting section of the ****pit and one would be seated above and behind them. When I'm done doing the exterior I will start working on an interior for the thing.
I'm still trying to decide what kind of structure to give the rocket launchers at the front, given that the scale I'm working on would have the original concept's launchers be more like heavy missile launchers in terms of size. Visible in the current picture should be the rocket faces as used in my rock-it launcher scene.
I'll maybe turn the front launchers into standard launchers, of sorts, Nova?
As for extra external detailing, I have the following on my list of to-model, working from the nose of the vessel to the back:
Sensor cluster on nose Landing gear and locking brackets for orbital landing and carrier hooking, respectively Anti-Gravity module on underside of nose for orbital landing purposes Launchers on nose Extension of the ship core into the underside of the ****pit area ****pit exterior detailing Shield emitters along the sides of the main shaft
Core section:
Detailing of the hatch Detailing of wing/core seams Detailing of launcher/wing seams Exterior core visibility detailing Engine block detailing Wing detailing Underside of core detailing to emphasise vessel complexity and express a weak-spot in the ship's design
Wings:
Wing engine blocks to be refined Vertical wing portion detailing Railguns to be remodeled to something that looks better and is lower resource Lower wing portion detailing with shield emitter coils (maybe) Improved wing-tip sensor cluster detailing
The main engine assembly also still needs a duct system, unless you can justify it not having one for me, Nova.
If it's to get one, please give me a rough edit-in of where you'd want it placed and what scale it should have. Currently I'm thinking flanking ducts placed on the shaft leading under the wings, with some adjustment to the currently too-fat piping that I have around there.
*ATNinja edit*
28k total polies so far for those of you interested. At least 3k of these that I can think of are wasteful backfacing polies with no visibility, which will be removed during optimization. ---

If it's not gonna enter an atmosphere, the design is off.
Why wings in space? It's that old brain of ours that wants wings on it, but we rather just do it like the borg, make it spherical or cubic.

Only real reason for wings in space is to mount the thrusters on them, which would increase the turning speed compared to more centrally aligned thrusters.
Sphere/Cube shapes are not the best in space combat as they are too easy to hit. A more pointed shape is better since you have a smaller cross-section and the slimness means less variation on a single angle will cause a miss. Also warp-engine dynamics e.t.c. may also require wings as stabilisers or other non-simple shapes.
BTW, you do know corvettes are smaller than frigates? This would explain why the guns aren't turreted on it. Something like this is probably about the size of a fighter drone or maybe slightly bigger.
This isn't star trek. Small ships are almost useless in Star Trek as the weapons basically never miss. This isn't true in EVE! :)

The corvette I designed where supposed to be the larger multi manned craft the military uses today such as the USAF AC-130 specter gunship or the E-2 Hawkeye. These eve corvettes are a mix of the two mentioned craft, being able to put firepower where needed and provide detailed information relaying it to all assigned fighters improving thier performance against the target. In comparison to a frigate you can basically rip the bridge area off the kestrel and give it wings and youll get something similar in size. So they're definetly bigger than the fighters and smaller than frigates.
Yes I put wings on alot of my 'strike-craft' but if you go though my gallery you may notice my older SF (star/space fighter) series and notice how oddly miscolored the 'control' surfaces are because they're thrusters.
Anyways my perception of scale and some note and messing around. Hangerbay Mockup =============

Just to check;
Is the colouring between the dark sections of the wings and the now coloured in portions to be made flush? Currently the brighter portion is a raised section.
I'll drop some basic texture overlays onto the next render for the Caldari insignia and such. Still need to find my stupid photoshop disc tho... ---

They are easier to hit on general, but only if your design is so alligned that it's the smallest for the thing targetting it. If you go around a target, sideways, you are easier to hit with big wings.
Also, thrusters on wings, in space? You know about the central graf point right? They will cause lots more spinning, not lots of change in direction. A sphere with a minimum of 6 thrusters is the most maneuverable.

Another minor update.
Rails changed out for something with less detail. Front launchers detailed and a few other additions.
Disregard the constantly changing colouring on some of the components; such as the vertical wings. This is an issue stemming from the objects visible in the renders mostly being referenced objects, as I work on them using non-rotated models.
Every element addition causes the textures to break a little bit. Once I'm done with the modeling phase I can convert all the objects into uniques and start unwrapping/texturing them.

You fail at reading!! :)
Long slim ships have a lower variance on a single angle which makes them harder to hit from any angle.
Also its called CoM (center of mass) and I said turn speed, as in rotational velocity. A sphere with 6 thrusters would not be as manuverable as a sphere with wings with thrusters mounted on the wings allowing it to spin quicker. (real physics not eve physics which I assume are using virtual momentum drives, which is the only system I can think of make EvE work in correlation with the real world)

CoM? Well nice, English is not my primary language so didn't know the word. Doesn't mather anyway ;)
I read turn speed as changing direction. But if you add wings, and put force on it, you will rotate but you get a bit of a sling effect. With thrusters on a sphere which can change direction, you have alot less of this. I don't see why a thruster on a wing makes the object turn/roll faster then one mounted on a sphere. It's even slower if you think about it. Imagine a huge wing of 200 km, and at the end of it one thruster. Fire it. How long will it take to turn your ship?

Edited by: AnonyTerrorNinja on 14/03/2009 18:01:20 Guys, while I appreciate the enthusiasm, please keep the following in mind while arguing physics in this thread:
1. The concept is meant to be in-character (if you could use the term) with EVE ships and the EVE universe; thus not all elements will be true to the real world 2. It's a fantasy concept, not intended to depict true realism 3. For orbital flight, a ship of this mass and profile would need a considerable amount of thrust over a reasonably large area and with reasonable thruster point locations to remain stable while in the air. Personally for orbital flight I'd place the wing thrusters a considerable amount ahead of the primary thrusters, as that would give a better air-control profile for the vessel; but again, this is a fantasy concept, not meant to be entirely realistic.
Also to those that have been leaving positive comments - thanks, but credit for the actual design goes to Novafox.
