If I wanted to build a dedicated EVE Linux/Wine box, is there a hardware build out there that would perform this task better than a similarly-priced Windows system? |

Other than current hardware, the BEST answer right now is to use an nvidia 8x series card or BETTER. ATI is coming along yes, but there are still issues and questions over their drivers and support from AMD. The older nvidia cards 5x/6x/7x ALSO have certain issues with wine, that while getting fixed soon(tm) by the wine devs, have been showing problems as the technology moves along.
So, amd x2 or better, or intel with similar specs. 2-4 gig ram (depending on 32bit or 64bit system) nvidia card sound seems to be working well integrated or not, but integrated has better OS support than a lot of oem cards.
My 2 cents.

can only report that the following box works like a charm and manages to run 3 accounts simultaneously: - phenom 4 core - Nvidia 9600GT - 8 Gig Ram - Sata HD
using slackware 12.1, kernel 2.6.28, nvidia drivers 180.22 and wine 1.1.16

Edited by: Mes Ren on 13/03/2009 06:30:25 A few things to consider. Wine generally adds a decent amount of CPU overhead to your computer, so better CPU's make a difference if running multiple clients. Memory used to be an issue with previous EVE clients (meaning having more was better, but now isn't as big of a deal ... Sev's recommendations seem like a good guidline. I definately agree with Sev concerning video cards, though as he said, ATI cards are coming along, and will ultimately pass nvidia IMO due to AMD releasing code so that 3rd party drivers can be developed. Everything else is pretty typical, generally more is better. |
