I am trying to brush up on the new probing system. So I figured an easy way would be to get a mission on my alt, and have him sit there and I would probe him out.
So I use the direction scanner and get a bearing. I deploy 4 probes at 4au each, I get a general hit, I move the probes to cover the hit area, I get a red dot, I move the probes to completely surround, scan, get a green dot and can warp to the target.
Then I tried again with a different mission. I get a bearing and start to probe. I am not coming up with a hit at all. Frustrated, I gang the alt, and then I can see where he is in space. I move the probes over to his icon on the map showing gang member in space.
I scan, and I get a hit. Then if I move the probes even a millimeter, and do another scan it wont give me a solid hit and let me warp. Even though the probe range is .5au and all 4 probes show 100% signal strength within .2au, they give seperate results.
Anyone else run into this? Look at the pic, the 4 probes are right on top of my alt, and it wont let me warp to him.
See what I mean? Am I missing something here or is this a bug?

not a bug. don't stack your probes like that imo.
each probe only knows its distance to the target, spread them out and overlap them.
triangulation is for reals, yo.

Well, I for one scan to catch war targets, (hardly ever, they have to be stupid). OR to gank mission runners. So C&P seems resonable.
I agree tho that IF the OP is sayings its a BUG, rather than asking if its a bug, then wrong forum

Nexa > The probes need to be at angles off of the intended target, so you can't have them to one side of the target for example. That's why people recommend to have them in a triangle and then the 4th ontop of it creating a pyramid in effect. Also, a less known feature, if you hold down shift, you can move around your "pyramid" to get the perfect positioning. _________________ - Rivqua - --- R.E.P.O. --- |

Its not a bug, you have 4 hits on the target but you need to move your probes into the correct position for triangulation.

Now what is a bug is the4 fac that, when you switch to the solar system amp it doesn't reline like it used too e.g. you are facing north, you open the map and it's facing south instead of north because that's the direction it was facing last time you opened it. This is what's making probing so hard for alot of people, more because they don't realise it's happening than anything else. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

Each singular probe only gives the distance and direction that the result is, from itself. The shorter range the probe, the more accurately it can gauge the range. This is why you have to have your probes in a pyramid shape around the signature.

I posted in C&P because the purpose of my scanning is to kill, not to explore. I figure there's more killing going on here than in whatever other forum you think this should be in, and people read this forum a lot too.
Anyways, it is a bug. Try this. Warp to an alt/friend/whoever, drop 4 probes while sitting next to them, then, warp out. Scan, you will get a hit 100% and can warp to the person. Then if you move the probes, even 1 of them, a single, tiny millimeter, then the scan messes up and wont let you warp.
Even if you arrange them pyramid style and you know exactly where the person is, it won't pick them up on scan. It gives results like the pic I posted and it doesn't show the red/green dot at all.

I see. So if a ship is to be used to kill, for example, you could ask for help in fitting it in C&P, not in the Ships and Modules section. You're very bright, Nexa.

You might still get better responses on forums were people already discuss the probing and related quirks. Here, with more folks and harsher tone, you likely just get more responses without desired content.
Say, if I find a suspected bug regarding freighter warp speed, would you suggest I reported it different forum based on my cargo? Like if hauling ships for my -10.0 pirate alt would go to C&P, if I had POS stuff I would need to head to industry forum etc..

Edited by: Nalena Arlath on 12/03/2009 15:09:25 You might have a few different issues.
First off, you need 4 probes to properly lock down the position.
Secondly, you shouldn't stack all the probes on top of eachother. Overlapping yes, overlapping 100% by placing them directly over eachother, no.
I tried same as you, using 6 probes, all smack ontop of my target. I had him listed at 100% hit on all probes, within range of all probes, but couldn't jump to him. Didn't show up on the starmap as a green dot, and couldn't right click in the Scanner menu to warp to him.
What I did then was drag the probes away from eachother, letting only a part of the bubbles overlap. Did a new scan and got the hit I wanted and able to warp to him.
In space, you need 6 points of reference in order to determine a position. You have elevation (up and down) and the right, left, forward, backwards positions. It all sums up to X,Y,Z coordinates.
So, to find a ship, I use 6 probes. 4 of them positioned as a "cross" at same elevation, one above the center, and one below it.
Check out my uber 3 minute schematic created in Paint.
Put simply, you start with 6 probes with large scan range, then you shrink them and put them closer together as you start to narrow down the hit. Remember that mousing over your hit will display a bubble that tells you approximate area where he is at.
Then simply converge your probes (bubbles) as shown in my uber drawing, and you'll pinpoint the target quite fast.
Takes a bit getting used to the interface and how to move the boxes, but practice practice practice.

i like to use 4 on the plane of the target in a box or diamond shape around the target, and two above, two below,
you want the probes to be as far apart as possible (given the range scale you are currently using) with the overlap from the probes scan ranges converging on the area of the target

Yep it would make sense to post it here. Lots of people pvp here, way too many EFT warriors in the fitting forum for my tastes. So you would not only get a fit suggestion here that people actually use but also a bit of strategy or tactical info as well even.
If you don't like it and want it moved, then report it or just play semantics all day and insult me like you usually do on all of my posts.

I personally think probes are working as intended. You just need to triangulate them accordingly. Anyway, I took your advice and politely asked to have your thread moved to the appropriate section. No need for thanks, twas a friendly favor from one carebear to another .
cant do that, i posted in here, i cant have my face seen in one of those OTHER forum sections

Couple of things.
1. You have 4 results instead of 1. That means that the probes can't "confirm" with one another that they have a hit on the same signature, so they each give you their own hit. This is probably due to your probes not providing different enough ranges to the hit. A probe might know the hit is .1 AU from you, but it doesn't know in which direction, and the second probe knows it's .1 AU from the probe, but not in which direction, and since they're right beside each other, they can't compare to figure it out.
2. You have the red bubble instead of the green dot. That's because your deviation is too high to warp to it, even though you have high strength. You gotta narrow it down more. You're using the shortest range on the probes so that means you either need better skills (to reduce deviation) or better positioning of the probes.
Essentially, you're probes aren't set up right. Spread them out a little more. Position them around the hit if you can as well.
