I have honestly never understood why this skill causes so much confusion, the description seems quite precise to me.

Oh, and I learned just about everything I know about mining from Halada!
The ambiguity of 'after' level 2 is understandably confusing to some. Perhaps it would be better worded "100% bonus to effectiveness of Mining Foreman link modules per level beyond the first."
And I learned how to mine -properly- from Halada!
The only reason why I would anyone having a prooblem with it is if english wasn't their first language or they never finished elementary school.
"Advanced proficiency at group mining. 100% bonus to effectiveness of Mining Foreman link modules per level after level 2 is trained."
100% bonus to mining foreman links effectiveness per level, okay that's easy to understand.
After level 2 is trained, I don't see why people get confused there. First of all there would be no point in giving a bonus at level 1 because 100% of 0.02 is still 0.02, 200% though is 0.04. Now if, they took out the last part of after level 2 is trained, the problem would then be people thinking that their supposed to be getting double the base.
I've been in an Orca and have been flying the Orca ever since it came out. I already knew the math for the mining foreman stuff before I was even able to use it.
Industrial Command Ships 4 Mining Foreman 5 Mining Director 5 Warfare Link Specialist 5 Cybernetics 5 - Mining Foreman Mindlink
The confusion was due to the guide stating "Increases link effectiveness by 100% per level" as mentioned earlier only a few posts back had it been read. Whether this was how the item used to be tagged in the game before some update or or if it was just a simple oversight in the authoring of the guide I do not know, but that is where some of the confusion was coming from. Take that with the fact that I had tons of excel formulas bouncing in my head and was trying to get around the multiply by 0 (if skill wasn't trained) and have it not come out zero, well you get the point.
Anyhow, [to Halada] Thanks again for the great guide. Hope to see the update sometime, and appreciate all your hard work on it thus far.

First of all, here's yet another 'thank you' to Halada. I actually found and read the guide nearly two months before joining Eve, and it was one of the reasons I finally sat down and tried it (eventually getting a subscription). This character is still a bit rough due to the normal 'kid in a candy store' feeling of a true first-timer - and no 'real' MMO experience** - but I've used the recent Steam offer to dabble in a Research/Build alt which is much more streamlined.
To clarify one item regarding beginner mission ships:
Originally by: Leocadminone
All of the career path mission arcs also GIVE you a Destroyer, IIRC, so the ship itself will be free.
Breakdown of the career path ship handouts (using Minmatar ship examples):
Mining path: mining frigate (Burst) & basic indy ship (Wreathe) Indy path: mining frigate (Burst), BPC (5 runs, one maybe used) for that frigate, and 'basic indy' ship as above Combat path: 'speed' frigate (Slasher), and 'Frigate L3' / PvP Frigate (Rifter)
So for an Amaar character, that would be 1 x Punisher, 1 x Executioner, 2 x Tormentor, 2 x Sigil, 1 x 4-run Tormentor BPC (or 1 x Tormentor and a 5-run BPC, if you do the mining group first and handed in the previous frigate to complete a 'build' mission)

I hate to say this but you probably have more MMO experience that counts when it comes to EVE than a lot of the rest of us. . . .
as for the new player Career path mission arcs, thoes are suposed to be overhauled in dominion,(if not sooner) so its kind of moot to even add it in at this time.

Halada,
Uber amounts of thank-yous and cudos for developing this guide.
I found one booboo that isn't already mentioned. It looks like the basic skills needed for a Retreiver is a titch off. If I read the database correctly, a retriever's minimum is Astrogeology 4. (Your guide states 5.)
As a critique (what I'd like to see): 1. In your Yield math examples. What would the Minimums be. For example: If you use minimum skills to fly a retriever, the math would be, 540 * 1.2 * 1.2 * 1.09 = 847.584 (Strip miner 1 * Mining bonus * Astrogeology bonus * Retriever [Mining Barge] bonus) The existing math would indicate absolute maximum yields if all skills are maximized. (Besides, if all these skills are maxed out.. I'd be flying something bigger than a retriever.)
2. More discussion on Alt playing. Being an almost totally new newb. I don't have a clue as to the mechanics of alt playing. Would I form a small two character corp? Would I have to PCs playing simultaneously? etc...
3. And a small discussion: Are Mining drones worth it???

Thank you for the guide. I am finding it very useful as I start my mining career and plan for the future. There is one point I am confused on that I hope someone can clarify.
Page 39 gives an example of max command pilot benefits with the following formula: 2% (Mining Foreman Link) * 5 (Mining Director V) * 1.5 (Warfare Link Specialist V) * 1.5 (Mining Foreman Mindlink) = 22.5 that when applied to yield results in a 29% increase.
1/(1-0.225) = 1.29, makes sense. It then says that a Rorqual pilot will boost yield by 42%. The Rorqual could give another 1.25 (at 5% /level) while the Orca could give another 1.15 multiplier (at 3% / level). I don't see where the 42% comes from
(1/(1-(2*5*1.5*1.5*1.25)/100)) = + 39.1% (Rorqual) (1/(1-(2*5*1.5*1.5*1.15)/100)) = + 34.9 (Orca)
That calculation may be incorrect. I'm looking to max out Orca pilot skills and would appreciate an example showing what the yield multiplier is. Thank you.

in real world testing with an Orca pilot (maxed on all orca skills and gang bonus skills and with the best mining boss implant) I'm getting about a 25% yield bonus. so either I've got something buggered in my setup or the formula above for the orca has an error in it.

If I was CCP, I'd really word the ganglinks as "The effectiveness/bonus of ganglinks is multiplied by the level of this skill." or something alike. Level 0 doesn't even need to be factored in, the skill at I is a prerequisite for even USING the link, so your bonus IS 0% without it. =/

Great work, definitely the definitive source for all things mining and then some.
I've recently completed a number of the 'final' god miner skills and because I have other characters for other things I am hard pressed to find new, relevant skills for my miner. I'm curious if Drone Sharpshooting potentially has any microbenefit to mining drones, by increasing thier optimal range, thereby shortening the travel time. Similarly, Drone Navigation seems to potentially have some microbenefit in reducing travel time as well. I realize the benefit is perhaps not worth investigation as drones are typically deployed on top of thier targets, but has anyone ever confirmed there to be any tangible benefit at all to these skills?
Thanks,
Anally Retentive Miner

Nice guide Halada,
Just found it and am currently using it to create my own spreadsheet and might have spotted a problem (not sure if it was mentioned previously). PDF pg 49 (or guide pg 43) You have changed the price per unit of the minerals but have not updated the Ore prices to reflect this
ie. If trit is at 4.22 isk then veldspar isk/unit should be at 12.67 (not 9.01 which is based on your table in the 2.2 version)
Hope I haven't repeated what has already been said but just wanted to make certain that the word got across. Also, am too lazy to read all the threads

3. And a small discussion: Are Mining drones worth it???
Alt playing usually requires a multi-client setup of some sort, either on two different machines or multiple installs on the same system. The latter setup is becoming more common with multi-core systems available now. Each 'active' client requires a separate account.
I currently have two accounts - this one (now on a Hulk) and a second account acquired through Steam (which is primarily a mission char but can fly a Bestower). Since the two have different install directories, I just setup EveHQ with the two locations and launch them that way (you can launch the Steam install through HQ without Steam running). When actually in mining setup, the Hulk pilot flies to a belt bookmark and stays put. At that point a standard jet-can setup is followed, except that its actively being collected by the other character (allowing the miner to always be working rocks, and the can to be relatively empty).
As for mining drones, they are definitely worth it. In a standard session I'll lock on the closest rock (usually less than 2K with my bookmarks) and set the drones on it. Usually within two hours they've cleared 2-2.5 rocks (veld/scord) all by themselves. However, as mentioned in the guide they should be considered a mini-bonus when available; I'm only using mining drones as the belt happens to be in 0.9 space. I would normally fly with combat drones (including spares if possible) so that rats aren't a problem in 0.8 and below.
