Edited by: Panfloot on 13/03/2009 16:20:56 Howdy,
I'm a new player, only been playing a week or two now and still in the process of training my learning skills up so don't have a great deal of combat or piloting skills yet.
I enjoy the dofficulty so far and trying to figure out the best tactics to use against other craft, like the first time I came up against a Cruiser and got my arse handed to me several times then figured out to use afterburners and get up close and personal so he can't target you or letting drones go in first and tank, works like 50% of the time against larger ships.
But I've come up against a bit of a brick wall atm and seek a little advice. So I'm going this new epic mission arc that starts from the Sister, I'm stuck on this mission from Brus Colterne called 'Our Man Dagan' where you have to warp and kill 4 escorts (easy enough) and then Dagan in his cruiser.
Now I can tank him for a minute or two but I just can't seem to do any damage to him, I put a little dent in his shield and he's nearly evaporated mine. My drones don't seem to do much harm to him either.
I was trying in a Gallente destroyer so I thought I'd upgrade to a Gallente cruiser and use the best 150mm guns my skill can allow and antimatter shells and upgrade to five drones.
I go in and same thing again, I can last a lot longer now but still I'm hardly damaging him, I do little dents and he heals up.
So my question is; With regards to strategy is there something I can be doing differently or arming myself differently? Or am I just too noob still and should wait for my learning skills to complete training and then learn some good combat skills to become better?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Sorry I should've put this in the Missions forum but was browsing the wrong forum, anyway it relates to tactics and setup aswell.

It seems strange that you are unable to kill a cruiser. It may be a heavy assault ship. ( cruiser class but tanked extremely well). It may pay you to ask some one in the local channel to assist, if this fails, look me up in game and i'll jump over and assist you.

which drones are you using? If you aren't using Hobgoblins, consider switching to them as they do the most damage. Or if you can Hammerheads, those are like Hobs but more powerful.
With drones, kite your target and let the drones do all the work. See if that helps.

I'm using Hobgoblin I drones, due to lack of skill I can only use five so that's what I have, still a week or two before my learning skills are at lvl 4, then I'll move onto the other stuff.
It's really weird, I don't have much of a problem with anything else now, I've managed to either adapt strategy or upgrade equipment to a point where I can deal with anything aslong as I don't do anything stupid. But with this Dagan guy I take tonnes of damage, I tried keeping to max range with a destroyer and afterburners but he could still do tonnes of dps, I tried getting in really close and orbitting and same thing, I upgrade to a cruiser and I live longer but can't do enough dps to him. My drones don't do much against him and he just keeps healing up all the time.
So I was thinking there would be other PVE'ers or missioners encountering the same problem.
I might just look you up Dilligafmofo if I'm still stuck, thanks for the offer bud!

Dagan is using an energy vamp, in fact it drains cap in no time flat. Come back and beat him in a cruiser, or like others said, find a bit of help.

I think there is something odd with Dagan. First time around (in a low skill Caracal) the NPC was shield boosting like crazy and took a good long while to grind away; even requiring a few pit stops to replenish ammo. Second time, helping someone out in a lower skilled Thorax, the same Caracal rips the NPC a new one and no apparent boosting effects were shown... didn't even empty a launcher. Very odd.
It could be a bug, or it could be scripted that way to give a major hint to bring friends.

Sorry for off topic but can an old character go back and do these "mission arcs"? If so, how?

With a frigate you can orbit him close (set to 1k) and he won't hit you at all. You need decent skills to break his tank though (and decent cap skills due to his nos), but it is possible to kill him in a frig.

Well done Panfloot,
Some things to keep in mind for anyone else having trouble with this rat or any rats for that matter.
1) Small guns are not designed to kill cruisers. This holds less true the more skill points you have, but if you are a new player 150mm rails VS a cruiser or a battle cruiser will probably be a failed attempt.
The reason small weapons are not designed for cruisers deals with the amount of damage they can do VS the collective HP of a larger ship. Not to say it isn't possible to take down a larger vessle 1v1 though, but typically, at least for rats, it is harder.
2) Using drones is a lot like using weapons in that small drones are not designed to kill Cruisers. Small drones will still damage a cruiser its just that most NPC cruisers will have several times the collective hp (shield/armor/hull) of a new player in a frigate.
3) It is easier to speed tank in a Frigate for newer players but in the case of this rat using an energy neutralizer you won't be able to speed tank for long, (When your cap runs out you will drop out of microwarp).
This will only compound things if you are using small weapons as you will have to maintain speed tanking for longer and longer.
As it was suggested asking for help is a good way to do things or using a cruiser will also really help out.

I'm in a caracal with 5 assault launchers and 2 ballistic control systems and I can't take him down. And you guys reckon a frigate can do it :/

The punisher is a fine ship. As I already stated it is not easy to do so. You might have to lower transversal velocity to overpower shield peak recharge.

I'm in a cruiser, 5 heavy missle launchers and I can't get his shields down. I don't notice any nos, just a target painter. I find the explosive damage missles gave me the most damage hp (compared to using em, kin, therm) but nowhere near their advertised damage hp (about 30hp actual vs 150 stated) but maybe I'm reading it wrong.

I was in a Celestis when I first tried this mission and could barely drop his shields using 2 200mm and 2 havoc launchers, before he would force me to retire to repair/reload. I eventually had to pull back, train up drones and run a few other missions to buy a Vexor. I came back at him with 4 hammerheads and 4 250mm rails and an ecm mod to cut down on his targetting and was finally able to space the bastard.

I managed to take him out in a Catalyst, as Dagan opted to use his vamp on my drone . I was using 6-limited? Anti-mater Neutron blasters at about 850m. I had about 20% armor left, and was getting ready to run when he popped. Definitely a tough nut.

Killed him in a Catalyst as well. Fit as many neutron blasters as possible, with antimatter ammo. Using a cap booster helps tanking him ;)

i did the whole arch in a rifter - but unlike you i bulked up all my gunnery and defense skills as soon as possible and im only just squeezing in the learning skills, try coming back and do it when you have upgraded/learn to do more damage or just throw on bigger gun? i think i did it with a energy vampire also,

He resists damage, apparently at 80% if you're correct.

Man- it's ridiculous. I am rocking him to no avail. With a caracal, various different weapon loads, drones.. can only kill half his shield.
I've spent millions in faction ammo.

This is just dumb. The shield is the problem- yet sabretooth missiles do less damage.

Edited by: Valorous Bob on 17/04/2009 04:34:39 Ummm has anyone here tried Hammerhead IIs? or is this a new-player-oriented discussion?
EDIT: Also a Vexor with 5 of the biggest cruiser sized rails that are available (350mm? i dont remember) and some Iridium ammo will get u enough range to help kill him while u kite with drones. iirc the rails with Iridium ammo give u like ~35k range. _______________________________________________

I stood off with an artillery cruiser (Rupture with 650's) and it was cake. He ate a lot of ammo but I took zero damage. I can't imagine how solos in Frigates would have a chance. Destroyers could probably get enough DPS on him but would have to get closer.
You can also invite someone in Local along for more firepower on the mission.

Dagan's actually not that easy for new pilots...
My roommate banged his head against him for 2 or 3 weeks. He was a new pilot, and was doing the epic arc as a start to his eve career. He is not killable by a new pilot even in a Caldari cruiser running missiles. Nor in a fast orbiting desty loaded for bear with guns. This mission is more a level 2 with a level 3 ship in it. IMHO, I think CCP will lower his resists a bit, or make sure to tell new pilots to bring a friend.
I finally came over with a few hammerhead II's and took care of him... Even then his regen/resists made him feel like a 700million isk bounty BS... His damage is not that strong, but he has a pretty evil vamp on him.

I have helped kill dagan so many times in the last few days (i actually found pristan harder relatively speaking).
I help people by drawing his fire and armor tanking in a coercer, generally armor regen at 22+ sorts him out.
Tonight i'll be about in a maller to help so look for me.
Generally his range is under 14km, though i have seen him hit for 6-11 at 14km - em and thermal i believe.
You need medium dps to break past his cap and regen. Once into his armor he's easy enough. Gainward 8800GTS 640MB Asus Maximus extreme Q6600 2.4Ghz Zalman CNPS-9700 LED Corsair DDR3 1600Mhz 2x2GB 3xHDD 160GB SATA 500GB WD MyBook ThermalTake Tsunamai Logitech G15 Microsoft Sidewinde |
