So.....
I was all excited about the new patch (as I am sure that everyone else was as well). Everything was looking/feeling great, right up until I opened up my BPO can and realised that I had 17 BPO's for the EXACT SAME THING!!! The "Expanded Core Probe" something or other.
I will explain this, for historical purposes, so that those who are just joining the game can read this and lawls/facepalm/whatever. These new probes, the "Expanded Core Probe" (something or other....can't check cuz it's DT) have "replaced" all of the other standard scanning probes (like the Gravimetric Quest Probe, Ladar Sift Probe, etc.) This ONE probe is now used instead of the 17 other probes that were used previously. Now, you might be thinking, "Great...consolidation, what is the big deal?"
Well...for those of us who purchased the BPO's for the original standard scan probes, not only are we out the isk that it took to buy all 17 BPO's, but we are also out on the hours of time spent researching those BPO's. Not to mention the ppl (like me) who had open sell orders up on market for the standard scan probes, that now have just disappeared into thin air.
I didn't think that this patch was gonna cost me isk. great job CCP...EPIC ****ing FAIL.

My prediction: you will meet a total lack of sympathy for your dire tragedy. In fact, most of people (evil bastards!) here will say something by the lines of "Booo-hooo", if they even bother to say anything at all.
And I will not be an exception.
So: you've lost some bpos and some sell orders. Nobody cares. Build a bridge and get over it.

Perhaps you have a constructive suggestion how this sort of thing _should_ be handled? Should CCP never do anything that could conceivably put out anyone at all in any way, even if it leads to a great improvement for the majority of players?
Of course, you _could_ have really made out, if you'd sold off your stocks of probes at the massively inflated prices we saw after the patch. You could have sold some of those BPOs for a bit, too.

Put them up on contracts, you will find they will probably sell as a LOT more people are interested in scanning now WHs are implemented. --

Well I can understand your disappointment. I run a BPO set selling shop with a few real life friends, every 3 months we add a new 'set' of BPO's to our Store so more and more starting out industrialists can get into the field without waiting weeks or months to get BPO's. People order, they usually get their bpo's within a day of asking us. So obviously this means we have to carry around a lot of 'stocks'.
About 3 months ago, we were researching what to expand into. We do almost all ammos, drones and even mining crystals. So we thought, hey, we think our clients would like full probe sets researched to ME25 PE25.
So like any set we release we make a few copies (in this case 3 sets of 16 BPO's each) research them all to ME25/PE25, give them to 3 members and start selling them in various regions and hubs to find out if this is a good market for the BPO's.
The results are positive over 60 days (our trial period) and we decide it's time for full scale production. So we buy another 8 entire sets and get them researching. I'd say EXACTLY the time we finish our research, our newest corp mate decides to link a Dev blog in corp chat. The next scanning system is in there, along with how all probes will become a single universal probe.
So we have 160 BPO's that are all going to become the same within a month, we know there are people that haven't read this yet and we could 'flash' sell the BPO's but we also have a rep of never, ever cheating anyone or being dishonest. So long story short we cancel our launch, and put all the BPO's in a can.
The new system hits and all are transformed. We put them up on contracts the next day, and all 160 sold for alot less then we paid for them, even with research. BUT, that's just the way it is. We didn't hurt our clients and the new system IS AWESOME it does sting a little that we decided to go into it and finished all our work the very day we found out it would be useless but hey, you win some, you lose some.
Put your BPO's up for sale in Jita on contracts, or even for sale on the sale forums. So many people are getting into it you'll sell em.
I wouldn't take it as an Epic fail, I'd just say their making the game easier in one area, so more people can make billions in WH space. Heck, we even took off that entire first week and ran scanning in empire, low sec and even 0.0 scanning this stuff, and other sites down. Had a blast doing it too. Sorry if you consider it a loss, but if you scan this new stuff down, or even a few sites you'll easily make back your isk in a few hours.
Good luck and hope you recover!

Surely you're not suggesting the BPOs would've been more useful if they produced unusable items?

Kinda saw an opportunity here, so I mfr all my quest probe BPC's (Grav, Ladar, etc) to their limit. The quest probes required no megacyte, so were the cheapest to make, probably less than 1k isk ea.
Day of patch, put the 4000 new Core Probes on the market, got about 44k ea before the market adjusted downward to more sane levels.
4000*43,000 = 172m Isk.
I've got a lot of Core Probe BPC's left from the set I purchased for 12m Isk about 7 months ago, but I'll probably put them on contracts as exploration is the FOTM right now.
Since probes are recoverable, their price should settle at just above mineral value in the near future.
My sympathies to all the holders of probe BPO's, I would expect you'll need to hustle somewhat to recoup your investment while exploration is still hot.

So did the OP never make any ISK selling probes or launchers prior to the patch?
If you had all those BPOs prior to the update, you had the chance to sell what other players who didn't have them couldn't. And those probes were not infinitely reusable either.

I'd ask for your stuff but it looks like you lost all your ISK on the market and you only have a lot of identical probe BPO's left. Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

Probe BPOs aside, the issue with the launcher's, why didn't they just give the owners of both Scan and Recon launcher BPO's one Core and one Expanded launcher instead of 2 Expanded launchers (in my case).
As a fellow manufacturer, you have my sympathies, but you should be able to sell on contract, your spare BPO's ************************************************** Maker of the finest Scottish drones and ammo...all combined with Active Peat Camouflage (tm) -- so dark, you won't see them coming!! |

Then people would ocmplain how they want a refund for all those bpos they had to buy now that they cant be used any more. Eitehr way nobody was going to win.

I don't think it's -too- far out of line, to have created some sort of NPC buyback.
Take your extra researched BPOs to the closest 1.0 university, and an NPC would give you -some- sort of compensation based on the ME/PE. That way, people would get something out of them, other than bird cage lining.
It's only fair, since CCP did completely alter the very foundation of Probing. I mean, it's one thing to nerf something so it works a little differently. It's another thing to completely change items, especially when you're changing multiple items into the same item in the end.

4.5 million isk/bpo as I recall. Seventeen exploration bpo's was 76.5 million (I bought an almost full set a couple of weeks before they announced the contents of the expansion.) Add to that the costs of researching them and the opportunity cost of flying the damned things around lowsec looking for a research hub that wasn't full...
Made some of it back selling core probes though, even though I couldn't log on for a while after the patch so I missed the real bonanza. Frankly I'm shocked at how high the prices still are on those things in some regions.
