My case:
Star Wars: Rebellion (or Supremacy in the United Kingdom and Ireland) is a real-time strategy game released in 1998.
Its the first "game" I install after a system rebuild, I play it a few times a week and have save games from it's release, Why as gamers do we carry on playing older games that have long since lost the retail battle and become rare even on Ebay.
Graphics? SW:R installs DX5.. I don't need graphics to enjoy it, Playablity? ST:R has it, hands down.. Games have come and gone from my hard drive but I've not found a game that I enjoy so much (After Eve).
Whats the one game, that you carry on playing after years of completing it over and over again?, why does it have that "You touch that CD and die" feel to it.
Who needs crysis level graphics? or a million sound channels? what makes a good game to you fine people?

Nice list of games, but why do you keep going back to them? What is it about older games that new ones just don't have?

Ahh, Star Wars Supremacy... that game ****d 3 of my hard drives before I pinned it down as the culprit of a succession of head crashes, god knows what it was doing to them though.
Old games I know and love to this day
System Shock Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time Fallout and Fallout 2 Shogun Total War Planescape Torment
Why do I keep coming back to them? I think the games above have either near perfect game play or top notch characterisation and story line.
In the case of Prince of Persia, it has both, if they'd only implemented a good combat system and allowed you to avoid more fights it would be the perfect game.

I still like to load up Empire Earth every now n then for 14 hour long full generation skirmishes. I don't know why but I love playing large islands. I systematically take each island and fortify them with at least one walled city (my stone production is immense). By the time I get to Nano age I've got the computer pinned in with a fleet of ships and I slowly chip away at him for about 10-20 minutes with aircraft coming from 4 carriers and 4 airfields. After the defenses are weakened I move in my fleet to take care of any shipyards and stragglers. Once all that is done I fly a regiment of troops in and hit explore and let them finish the enemy off. Of course in most cases there is usually some peon stuck in a random corner that I have to spend the next 30 minutes looking for.
And my father stole my copy of Battlezone over a decade ago and to this day still plays it.

For me a game must have Depth in order for me to play it and really enjoy it, I have no problem playing a fun shooter like FEAR but it'll never be my #1 game unless it's all about the details.
As such my favourite games tend to be pretty unpopular these days (Aside from EVE of course) for example I have played RetroMUD for years now and don't see myself stopping any time soon, I keep playing Nethack and ADOM, I very much enjoy all the careful planning and detail involved in building a stunning Dwarf Fortress and the openness of some RPGs like Wizardry and Daggerfall. Of course, I still find it hard to take off the old nostalgia goggles and so my early games will always have honorary places on my list of fave games with Colossal Adventure and Lords of Time (Level9 computing I miss you , I even have Lords of Time on my DS) as well as Harrier and other such games. Perhaps somewhat controversially I never was a big fan of Elite, I think I was probably doing other things at the time and glossed over it.
All time fave though? hmm.. that's tough.. so tough infact that I can't give you an answer I love all those games.

Flair and imagination.
Battlezone.
F-22 ADF (I don't play it myself, I'm not pro enough to even touch it, but wow - still)
"My truck is loaded."
Deer Hunter (what, you never camped a gate in your life?)
EVE Classic.
Battlezone.
But no. This is inadequate. Need more polygons. More particle clouds and shaders! Throw moar!
Until one day, the player experience largely depends on how many times the name of your graphics card features the letter X.
EDIT: Starcraft. How could I forget?

In my case, after having played literally hundreds (if not thousands) of PC games, the clear winner(s) after all these years are Thief 1 & 2. Other runners-up are Doom (2) and Fallout 1 & 2.
In all of the above cases the reason is pretty much the same: Fan-made content. Very few games have had as much user content created for them as Doom, while Thief and the Fallout games have dedicated fans creating high-quality content as we speak. For games over a decade old, that's saying something.
In the case of the OP and Star Wars: Rebellion (Supremacy), the reason is different but perfectly understandable: High replay value. Many strategy games similar to Rebellion offer a different game with each playthrough, as random maps and events call for different tactics. Civilization and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri are two similar games I also hold in high regards. |

Old games I love:
Xwing Freespace 1 & 2 ST: Armada 1 Homeworld 2 Sim city 3000
I think we love the old games because they are innovative, have a particularly interesting storyline, falling to that "our first time in the genre" catagory or just happen to still manage to run on the computer. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Elite Frontier and First Encounters for gameplay that goes on and on. No storyline unless you want to play it.
Wing commander 2 & 3 and Prophecy. Some stories are just made to re-enact over and over.
Privateer 2. Now I wonder what would happen if I took this path and made that decision instead.
Plus the fact that recently, there seems to be a shortage of new space sims. Why can't CCP create an open ended sim based on Eve? It could be a huge hit. --

The difference is the developers being daring, experimental and trying to make something funky rather than the cubicle, 9-5 code monkeys who are being suppressed by the mighty publishers who just want you to churn out Dead Horse 17, and they already got you by the balls so you'll have to make them 18 and 19 too.
In other words; they lost their soul, which means soulless boring games. Thing is ofcourse they get bought by the zillions. No one plays Psychonauts, everyone plays NFS37 and Anime_ripoff84.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned UFO/Terror froom the Deep yet. Legendary games still worth replaying.
Why I replay them:
Atmosphere. UFO especially. MIB, secret bases, alien invasion, alien mind control, you get to kill greys and make flying saucers. And all before the x-files came out.
Challenge - TFTD especially. 2nd Jan base invasion has been known
Player actions have consequences. Losing half your squad for a lobster man navigator (critical research alien) can make life much easier, and dodging a hard terror site can come back to haunt you when the funding nations give final notice and theres only ethereals.
And like someone else said, it was a game I played when younger.

Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares (MOO2, 1996) Aaah, good old times of hotseat multiplayer... Never, ever had a machine that didn't have it on the HDD almost permanently. I think I cloked more hours in it than any other game.

Back in the old days game had to have a IDEA to sell. Nowdays it seems that most of the effort goes into making it look pretty and actual gameplay will remain somewhat ... shallow ... in most cases. Thus those old enough to remember what game should be like drift back to nethack or Elite II or whatever from time to time.
Nothing wrong with pretty game ofc - but at the end of day it's the actual content that counts.

Privateer 2 - Definately. The amount of boundries that shattered back in the day, all star cast.. amazing graphics for the time.
Man, I love that game - the fact you got Audio Smacktalk from the NPCs was just win. Pure Win.

Age of Empires 1 and 2 were my all time favorite games when i was younger, i easily spent 6 hours a day playing both multiplayer and trying to beat my previous time on beating the campaigns.
Other old favorites are deffinitly Duke Nukem, it was my first mature content game, and boy did i love it. Not to mention i loved playing it at only 5 years old. :D
The original Doom gets a mention for the same reason as Duke Nukem. It was also my first ever FPS i played multiplayer on, whether it was LANing with my dad or with anyone else i could find.
Finally, my favorite Star Wars games of all time are the original Dark Forces series. I am of course biased because back then at my young age i thought star wars was the only thing in the world that mattered. (altho i still have that problem sometimes :P) I also really loved the multiplayer, almost as much as the Doom multiplayer. -----------

Fallout 1+2 cause I enjoy a well-told story more than I do graphics.
X-wing and Tie Fighter cause sci-fi simulaters are almost always better than sci-fi action-shooters.
Half-Life 1 Cause I can play it for a whole week, rather than just a whole hour.
Flashback cause not every game is better in 3D. (looking at you Fade 2 Black!)

Oh yes, Syndicate rocks. 4 little guys running around in trenchcoats with miniguns and an arsenal of other weapons and upgrades. I like being able to shoot at a car to make the owner run off and then your guy driving off in it. It has to be the original GTA, Rockstar just stole the idea
