Edited by: Kazuo Ishiguro on 17/03/2009 16:19:24 I thought the other thread needed a summary, so here it is:
- People need to keep loot separate from fits.
- 999 stack / item limit
- 'Stack all' lags with lots of items in hangar.
- Reprocessing window lags with lots of items in hangar.
- Items window lags with lots of items in hangar, plus scroll lag
- Try finding that module again you just took off your ship that got auto arranged into 900 other items.
- Try finding that unknown quantity of modules that won't repackage
because they need repairing among your 900 items with tons of them unpackaged, unpackagable etc...
- Unstackability of Amarr T2/Faction ammo (after firing 1 shot)
- Inability to separate BPOs and BPCs with a cursory glance.
- BPCs tend to be very numerous and can't be stacked.

This is actually why I keep Freight Containers at every station I regularly visit, that contain all my loot, ore, etc. This way it gets hauled to the corp office now and then to get sorted, while I can keep any modules and ammo types I use in my hangar itself without it getting messy. And I can switch fittings on the fly thanks to the new fitting window, so I'm a happy camper really.

I store items in containers for many of the same reasons you have mentioned, but the main reason I store things in containers is to make them 1) easier to find when I need them, and 2) keep them out of sight when I don't. Any solution that makes items easy to find when I need them and hides them when I don't would save me time and break my container addiction.
Like I was saying in that other thread, I like the Gmail logic as applied to our hangars. Store stuff out of sight that we aren't using at the moment with a right-click option, then just recall the things we need with a keyword or two. Has anyone used Gmail that knows what I mean?
But again, any solution that meets my two basic needs of item management would make me very happy...

Early on every Eve player realizes they have to organize their stuff in some rational fashion. Most use containers, I would guess.
Expecting the game to do all this for you is just plain laziness. Spend some time and do it right, and have the personal discipline to put stuff in its place before you log off after you go loot a bunch of missions.
My wife watches a lot of those "organize me" or "my place is a mess, and I have no room to live my wonderful life" or "my house doesn't sell because I'm a pig and have no taste" shows on the home and garden channel. So you're not alone...
Eve doesn't have personal organizers, so you just have to do it yourself.
The "save fitting" is just the information folks. Or buy a whole bunch of ships and modules and save each ship!

- Put the loot in a can. Easy.
- Ok, that could be a problem, but I've never even come close to having 999 stacks even with a hangar full of accumulated junk.
- It's not that bad.
- I don't reprocess much, so haven't noticed this.
- Haven't noticed this either.
- Ok, I'll just scroll down to the correct item type. If it's really that hard to find, I can use my asset search. Which wouldn't work if it was in a can.
- Keep everything in my hangar repaired, it only saves time later when I want to use or sell something.
- This one's annoying, but I don't see how containers help.
- Also annoying, not that I use BPs much.
- Also annoying, but you can just put the BPCs in a can.
I like the option to save fittings, it's useful. Why not keep the fittings in your hangar and sort the other stuff into cans? |

I agree, I like the save fittings option, too. I think everyone can win here with some solution that avoids the need to put things in containers, such as hiding things we don't need to see at any particular moment, whether by using tabs, searching by keywords or what have you. Keep the list filtered for me, but still allow the fitting screen to get them.

haha, maybe that came out a bit harsh! For me, the simple "sort by type" works fine and I dont generally hoard items to amass thousands at once in a hangar, so maybe I havn't experienced this trouble?

You can fit items from the assets window, if that helps. It's not ideal, but does let you search and I think is overlooked by many people. |

Here's my temporary fix to this problem and still use the auto-fit option:
(1) I keep my ship's modules on a separate container that I dump into the station hangar when I'm ready to refit.
(2) Use auto-fit.
(3) Re-dump mods back into container.
(4) Profit.
I know it's not ideal, but it saves me a ton of time having to refit, for example from travel fit to mission fit.

A fair suggestion and you're probably right that it's overlooked. The 5 minute delay is one reason that most industry oriented players would not be able to use it for day to day tasks. Industrial activities would become even more tedious if you had to wait for your list of things to update as you were going along. I would bet that the 'sorters' spend a fair amount of time doing industrial stuff, while the ones saying 'just leave everything in your hangar' do very, very little industry. That's just a hunch, though.
As for the other suggestion, I can't just dump all my stuff into the hangar, unless I would start keeping all my mods in one container, but I sort them according to function, so I can find them quickly. The new fitting tool is good for swapping fits, but what about developing new ones? I would go mad scrolling through so much stuff to find a particular mod. The assets window would come in handy for that, though I guess.
Maybe I need to rethink the way I manage my things. It's a hard life being a pack-rat.

Is this some kind of joke?
Do you really have 999+ eanm's in your hangar?
Can't you just put the damn loot in its own can for reproc days?
What the hell do BPC's and BPO's have to do with ship fittings?
Ammo is always at the top of the list order, so who cares about unpackaged Amarr ammo?
Its amazing, but the items are actually in a specific grouping, in a specific order, so if you can't figure out the order, after playing the game for more than a month, then maybe, JUST MAYBE, its the wrong game for you.
Honestly, half the crap you listed is in no way limiting the use of the ship fitting section.
What IS limiting it is your own personal OCD's about keeping your hangar organized into neat little labeled cans, and I for one, salute CCP for giving you the therapy you needed years ago to help you deal with your problems.

ive never really had this problem... every isk i earn goes into ships, which need weapons and insurance, then blows up, anything that survives or isnt looted by the people that blew me up, gets put straight onto another hull... rinse and repeat lol
although ill admit that when i ran my trial period i did amass a stupid number of items in a short space of time...
solution... come find some risk /:D

It sounds to me like you like to keep people organized in one neat little labeled can. But people are different.

For me, I end up with stuff in my hanger that does not belong to me, it belongs to the corp or to other corp members. Most, if not all of my corp members have the same problem, so we use containers, mostly "Station Containers", to keep stuff separated. As such, a few tabs like the corporation hanger has would be great for personal hangers.

1) Loot and fits are the same thing. How about throwing your Loot into a can instead of your fittings in a can. 2) What does the stack limit have to do with fitting window? 3) Stack all lags regardless of whats in your hanger if you're stacking enough stuff. 4) Same, if you reprocess enough mins, it's going to lag regardsless. 5) Upgrade your computer. 6) this is what the SORT feature is for. After a while you'll know where things should be in your hanger due to sorting. 7) Repackage everything and you dont' have to hunt for stuff. Same for Repairs. Repair ALL. 8) So What? You have a lot of crystals? use them or trash them. 9) BPO's and BPC's should be in a Corp hanger that only you have access to for security reason so you can access them from all yours alts. 10) Same as above.
All your reasons for using cans is due to lazyness and in ability to memorize things.

No, station containers are a crude workaround for poor item management.
What EVE needs is a better in-station item management system.
What eve needs is something similar this. Note how the items are sorted by types into windows. Even though the items themselves are actually god knows where, and in whatever bag. Such a system could even be made to use station containers too.
Here is an even better method that allows categorization and displays your items in a logical, sorted fashion. The description translated for EVE would read something like: Quote: The inventory manager's display windows are built from 'virtual bars', you assign categories to bars so that items in that category are displayed on the specific bars you want. There is no limit to the number of bars you can have inside a window but obviously you only have so much screen real estate before it becomes 'too many'.
The inventory manager uses several methods to assign a default category to an item such as what skills you have, item attribute parsing, and item types and metalevels. You then assign those categories to a virtual bar.
Basically, any good inventory management system is essentially a model-view-controller system where the view & controller is basically a set of filters & view manipulation. You don't really care where in the station, or where in the station containers your items are, you just need to be able to get at the ones you want quickly, and EVE's methods for doing so are so crude as to not be worth mentioning.
Station containers are an extremely crude player work around. The fitting save/load functionality only tackles a tiny part of the problem. Once again, CCP basically took a single use-case (keeping all your stuff floating in the hangar) and coded only for that. Ignoring all the people that use station containers completely and leaving them out on the fitting save/load functionality.

So, basicaly buy a Golem for each of my fits plus the traveling fit? . Just... Dude.
IMHO, Ship auto-fitting is one of the best features that came with Apocrypha, along with skill que. Sure it could use some tweaking here and there. But as it stands it already saves me heaps of time by not having to contstantly refit between travel and PVE fits. If it could fetch from containers that would just be icing on the cake. But again, I'm already benefitting from this feature. So to say it's completely useless is simply gross exaggeration.

No, because then it can't be sold.
Quote: 2) What does the stack limit have to do with fitting window?
Because the response to "fitting window doesn't work with cans" is "keep everything in the hangar", which doesn't work after a while.
Quote: 3) Stack all lags regardless of whats in your hanger if you're stacking enough stuff. 4) Same, if you reprocess enough mins, it's going to lag regardsless.
…which is why keeping everything you own in the hangar is a bad idea.
Quote: 5) Upgrade your computer.
True. In the meantime, why not use cans.
Quote: 8) So What? You have a lot of crystals? use them or trash them.
Because that's a thing that makes it rather easy to accumulate large (unstackable) piles of stuff, leading to above problems. That's what.
Quote: 9) BPO's and BPC's should be in a Corp hanger that only you have access to for security reason so you can access them from all yours alts. 10) Same as above.
…except you might not trust your corp with them, or you might not even have a corp.
That said, yes, containers are a hugely cludgey workaround to a problem that proper inventory management should solve. It's just an added aggrevation that the ship fitting mechanic is horribly bugged at the moment. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |
