Where do these come from? Player made or loot drops? I did notice we get some now with the tutorial training so I know about those but I am assuming this isn't the case for all of them!

Most skill books are sold by NPCs on the market. Some are available in Loyalty Point stores (and are then sold on the market by players). A few are loot from exploration sites (and are then sold for lots and lots of isk on the market by players).

All skill books come from the system, none are playermade. The common skillbooks are sold through the Market interface by NonPlayerCharacter corporations.
The less common ones can be found through loot drops, and the loyaltypoint store (LPStore). You can only access the LPStore if you have gained some loyaltypoints through doing missions for these NPC corporations.

90% of skillbooks are "seeded" (put on the market) by NPCs, and are available under the "Skills" category int he Market Window. You simply buy them, go to the station you bought them from, pick 'em up and use 'em.
Certain skillbooks are "seeded" through the Loyalty P{oint (LP) stores. These are mostly such things as the specialized Connections skills, weapon specialization, etc. These are usually resold onthe Market, again under the SKills category.
The really reare ones are gotten through complex running - there are cans in some complexes that require the Hacking skill to open, and some of those have REALLY specialized skillbooks within. Usually for esoteric things relating to Industry...
Those are also available through the Market, or on contracts.
If you're using EvEMon, there are some skills there listed as NON-PUBLIC skills. THose are not available in-game, but are inthe database dump that EvEMon uses. Those non-public skills are either experiments by the Devs that never made it to the Live servers, skills that were deemed too overpowered or not needed anymore so removed fromt he game, etc. The non-public skills are not gettable currently in any form.
Hope that helps you.

The best place to get skill books is from a starter school station in a 1.0 sec station. The basic skill books are seeded from the schools so the price will never have a markup.

When looking at the market, any order (both buy and sell) that has an expiration of 364 days is an order placed by an NPC. You will find that many skills are sold by those types of market orders.
