Hey! I've been playing EVE for about a week now and have gotten up to a Stabber ship wise (cruiser).. I originally made Minmatar because I heard that they are pretty good for PvP but to be honest.. I am HATING it, what would I be losing (besides money and skill training time) if I was to choose another race?
I really don't know what I would choose, I am really a long range type of person and can't stand those cannons.. Could anyone break down the races for me and explain what is best (in their opinion) and why?
Thanks :)

Why not just start training skills for another race's ships? You're only a week in. All the support skills you have trained remain valid and if you ever decide you want to come back to minnie in the future you're already on the way there skill wise/ -

Hey skill.
If it is long range you are looking for then caldari is the way to go. Although they are primarily a missile based race, all caldari gunboats get a pretty big optimal range bonus to their guns.
Missiles are pretty far reaching as well.
Keep in mind that you do not have to delete your character to cross train other races.

You should ask stuff like this in the New Citizen Q&A forum. The people there might not be quite as distrustful and bitter.
As for your question: Play the race you find most interesting in terms of visuals, backstory, portraits... (whatever you fancy). If you don't care about either, stick with your current char. The differences aren't all that big, especially not for a new character that starts at 50k skillpoints and has to skill pretty much everything anyways. If your only gripe are ships/weapons of your race then simply find one that suits you and start training their skills (you only need to train their racial frigate skill again). With the limited baseskills of a post-apocrypha character it really make no difference whatsoever.

You don't really need to start over with a new character, just start training skills for what you want. Here's the (basic) breakdown (for what I'm familiar with):
Amarr = Lasers, no ammo needed but their guns use up your capacitor(battery power), they're great for armor tanking. Caldari = Missile boats, explosive radius, but damage varies against ship sizes, they're great for shield tanking. Galente = Guns and drones, good to annoy your enemies Minmattar = Guns, speed, and ships held together by ducktape.
Remember, you don't need to start over if you don't want to. Unlike most other games, with EVE you can simply change your focus and even cross-race train without any penalties. Just takes time. - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

Don't pick race based on "good for pvp" you can train any race for any ship.

Take any info that you get on the forums and do the exact opposite, that being said train mim, they have the best ships because their guns don't use any cap and they have uber gtfo'ness.

You shouldn't be losing any money, just skill points. When you create your alt, just transfer your isk to your new character.
As for ships, I have a preference for Gallante and Caldari.

Cross training the different race ships givews you a good range of ships and ammo to select from.
If you are looking more at mission running the Caldari would be the better bet as the missiles can strike from a very long range. For PVP I would look, give the games current balance, towards Amarr
But also remember that it is not just what ship you can fly so much as how effectively you can fly the ship. So remember to train up on the support skills for that type of ship, such as missile and shield buffs for Caldari and gunnery and armour buffs for Amarr. Also get those drone skills up as those little beasties can sometimes be the difference between life and death.

If you like to send your religion to the heathens by way of laser-encoded cannon-transmitter, go with Amarr. They have excellent range, use no ammo, can swap out laser lenses to adapt to new situations, and are good at hull tanking.
If you like the idea of piloting a drone carrier with 5 mobile gun platforms swarming your enemies at ranges of 80km or more, go with Gallente. They have good hybrid-bonus ships, good drone bonuses (bonii?), and are good at hull tanking and have some of the best passive shield tanking ships.
If you like teh missilez and railguns, and never want your shiney paint scratched go with Caldari. They focus on missile and hybrid damage, shield tanking, and generally being hardcore.
If you like your ships to look like a random collection of junk that happened to roll up in some stray duct tape, use missiles and projectile cannons, and roleplay the downtrodden underdog, go with Minmatar. They have very sturdy shield tanks, great ranges and their guns use no cap.

Well, if you want long range, Minnie are as good as any other. While the Autocannons are a short range weapon, the Artillery have some of the longest ranges out there. If you want to snipe, train up Arty as high as you can. Nothing like shooting VW Beetle sized shells at your enemies.
Keep in mind that you are not restricted to a single character on an account. Although you can only have one character per account training anything at any one time. But if you want to play around with other races, feel free. You don't have to delete your current character to try out others. Fix the Wardec System! Upgrade the Probing System! |

I think I see the problem right here. If your looking for some out-of-the-gate uber PVP race, it hasn't been invented yet. Training the skills nessesary for good PvP ships will take weeks to months. Many of the best have been training for YEARS at this, so you're never going to be on equal footing with them.. especially in a week. You need ship skills, support skills, and core skills. If you can't handle taking 2-3 months of missioning/mining and what-not while you train up the skills required for ships and decent equipment.. you are in the wrong game and will be dissappointed. If, however, you are willing to invest the time and effort with a long view to the future, you can eventually train for any race/weapon/ship or profeesion you like.

With only a week in, you have barely scratched the surface of what frigates can do, let alone cruisers. I'm gonna go ahead and bet that your supporting skills for that cruiser are lacking.

You don't have to, just train to fly another race's ships.

Artillery can reach out pretty long freakin range man... you just need the skills.

Your stabber sucks because you don't have the skills to use it properly yet. Get back into your rifter.

A slightly more elaborate explanation:
Besides the obvious skills like "<race> Cruiser", "<race> Frigate", "<Size> <Weapon>", the various skills needed for tanking and so forth there are a ton of skills that help flying your ship. I'm most likely missing some, but the most important ones are:
Engineering - increases the base grid your ship has Electronics - increases the base CPU your ship has Energy Management - increases your capacitor size Energy System Operations - faster capacitor recharge Weapon Upgrades - weapons use less CPU and thus you can fit more of them.
These skills apply to ANY ship you happen to be flying and can push it well beyond the "make or break" point.
Look into them, and get a tool like EFT (EVE fitting tool) or EVEMon to see how these skills affect your ship. 5% per level might not sound like much, but it all adds up.
You can still start to cross-train afterwards, it's as easy as buying the skill books. Depending on how you assigned your training so far - if you have put time into shields I'd suggest Caldari (yes, they are not very good at solo PvP since their tank uses the same slots as many modules needed for PvP) since they rely on shields too. Thus you might already have some skills needed to fly these ships.
Amarr ships are nice for PvP since their low-slot tank does not clash with scramblers et al, but you need to learn skills for armor tanking AND lasers to fly them well.
Gallente is basically in the same boat - you need to train armor tanking and hybrids/drones.
If you haven't trained up many skilsl yet (chances are you haven't) go with Amarr or Gallente based on what sounds nicer to you :).

Here's the joust of it;
Amarr is for the "JeanLuc Picards" and "Captain Kirks" out there, that old school sci-fi, lasers and such people. Very deep thinking at times, sometimes at the expense of your ships. If you don't like other people, go Amarr, we even hate ourselves at times.
Caldari is for "Michael Bays" and "Arnolds" out there, basically the guys who like to shoot big things at other things and watch HUGE explosions. No serious plot lines, but lots of action.
Minmatar are for the "Mister Ts" and Sutherlands" out there, kick in teeth and screw common sense. It's about funs, guns and semi naked *****s.
If you notice i left out gallente, because if none of the above interest you, you'll be perfect for gallente. They read books and drink wine those fancy f...

Yo, new customer = gone customer?
My second alt is currently training the learnings to 5/4*. It's an alt, so I don't much care that I can't play with it for a couple of weeks. But I'd never ever suggest a newbie to start out with purely learning skills. Have you seen the apoc skillset? You probably can't even do station spinning with those skills... Get the basic learnings to 3, maybe int/perc to 4 and adv int/perc to 3 (or whatever you primary training area is), but don't go all learnings. No point in waiting 2 weeks only to realize that you lose interest in it or maybe don't even like it.
(*) training speed is rediculous btw - char was created pre apoc but gets 100% bonus: Basic learnings V in 2d6h... wtf
