I use them in missions (helpful against Guristas)...but the missiles aren't very smart. I think they currently attack the closest missiles when fired which many times is wasted because the targeted missiles has already hit my ship.
An idea that might work is to have the defender missiles target the missiles furthest away from the ship but within it's working range (which is 75km max skills).
Other ideas are appreciated! __________ \(^.^)/ |

That'd be nice, but I would really love if defender missiles not only targeted missiles at you, but at your fleet mates. Maybe even make a defender destroyer...if only.

The only problem with an Aegis Cruiser is that it would nerf missiles even more for PvP. You'd only need a few ships to effectively nullify quite a lot of DPS. To balance it the Aegis ship would need to be a bit of a glass cannon, would be primaried instantly, and would not be able to effectively defend against anything more than 2 or 3 ships firing against it. It could also be quite short range, needing to be out in front in order to intercept incoming missiles effectively, meaning that it will probably die even faster. You'd also need an equivalent gun defence platform (improved tracking disruptors, for example) to balance.
Otherwise, I like the idea.

We need a fix on defenders itself first! Most of the defender missiles are wasted because they target missiles too close to the ship. They are borked... __________ \(^.^)/ |

Not to mention defender missiles in concept are severely broken, as there is absolutely no counter against a defender. ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |

Not being able to defend isn't broken, remember, a defender missile is lost dps.
What I would like is to not have to keep mashing the fire button to get the turret to fire.

Please notice that if the defender ships were for instance destroyers, one good battleship would instapop some 10 of them in minute...

Not if it was a missile battleship.

whilst on the topic of defending against missiles, how about a Turret based equivalent sort of like the Phalanx ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phalanx_CIWS )
