I was talking with my brother about Eve the other day and it got me thinking about my X-52 Saitek joystick. How much more fun could Eve be if you could actually control your ship with a joystick?
Thinking about it some more I realized I'm probably not the first to come up with the idea so I start looking around for previous threads and only find one last discussed a year and a half ago.

After reading the thread a little I can understand what some of the arguments are about the lag that would be generated.
Here's my question, with all of the recent hardware upgrades, the introducing of new technologies like stackless I/O and other improvements that I'm probably not fully aware of, would the game be able to better handle the increased bandwidth flow as well as other problems that were discussed?
Even if considered I still understand that it would probably take a long time to implement but nothing starts without a first step so that being said would the devs at least consider the possibility of at least offering the option instead of replacing the current set of controls right now completely? Maybe make it an add-on?
I feel that it would make things like mission running and pirating a lot more interesting if you could manually control your approach to a target with more precision. For you exploration buffs it might make fights with Sleeper rats a lot more interesting :D Others might disagree for whatever reason but I would like to see what current arguments today would be so put your thoughts :D

Just like almost every other MMO, EVE Online follows an action/turn based interface. A real-time interface with the server would be impractical for many reasons, not the least of which would be synchronization issues. If you think lag is bad now... ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |

It wont happen and I hope it never does.
Freelancer had joystick control and the PvP was terrible. Every little nuance of your joystick must hit the server..and they all don't make it. You would have ships jumping about sporadically as you would try to navigate.
It was terrible.
I would rather opt for more hard coded controls besides "orbit", "approach" and "keep at xyz range" for combat.

In games where everything except rendering graphics is server side, it just doesn't work. There is far too much lag. Once upon a time some FPS's were run server side, they were horrible. You'd fire your gun and 5 seconds later the gun would shoot. I do want an eve like game to be more first person-ish. I want to fly an inty with a joystick, weave between sprays of blaster fire to take out the engines on a titan by placing a few well placed shots in the engine nozzles, thus preventing it from leaving the area for 2-3 hours while the crew attempts to repair the damage. But that is simply not possible on eve due to the way it is designed.
Such an MMO could be made but it would have to break two core MMO norms, first it would be skill pointless or else it would break any and all immersion. And second it would have to be run client side like any modern non-MMO game. How such a game could be made I don't really know, but it seems doable at this point.

This is covered in the commonly proposed ideas thread sticked at the top of this forum. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Gaming mechanic issues aside (such as skills becoming irrelevant, etc), I guess some of you didn't play SWG:JtL when it came out (before they killed it).
Ships weren't jumping and warping all over the screen. Yes, it wasn't as complex, but there are alot of games out there that don't jump around that require constant communication between client and server.
And XJ, you will get the same arguments from last year because the majority of people on the EVE forums think CCP is god and CCP knows best.

No one said CCP was god, but I'm fairly sure they know whats best for there own game..
Past that, like you said it would make the nav skills useless, mess up the tracking and gun skills as well.
In addition, other games that require constant communication with the server don't run 50,000 people on one server. The problem isn't allowing twitch movement when your flying around shooting a few rats, or mining solo in a belt, its when the pvp starts and you have 400 vs 400 (more like 600 vs 600 now) fighting, that's to much data to transfer, calculate damage, check for ship collision, and anything else the server needs to do.
Its not being a CCP fan boy to say, the server couldn't handle it. Aside from that, this game is more based on strategy, and to some extent blobing then it is personal pilot skills on a joystick. Right now, joysticks don't fit into eve's playing style, and I for one hope they never do. Keep in mind I don't think it would be much fun flying my BS going 150m/s, and the only ships that would see any fun with this would be small fast ships.
