Does nothing but kill cans and rockets/missiles...
Is this a flaw or are they designed like this? I had this silly vision where I could see myself using smarbombs to hurt enemy ships!?
Perhaps they are too smart for me?
Could someone please tell me everything there is to know about smartbombs or energy pulse weapons or whatever they are called.

Either youre new to the smartbomb concept or theyre too smart for you Their main advantage is on battleships, where 3 smartbombs can blow up all frigates in 5km radius. Its also a weapon with great area damage and has no need for locking, so in PVP it has various purposes ----------------------------

they arent "smart". simply an area effect weapon , that in some cases is very helpful and in others will get you or someone you didnt mean to , killed .
i like SBs personally :) but i will never equip them while flying in empire space. -------------------------

I understand the concept and I know about the area effect. I never payed any attention to them until I got a medium named one for mission reward. what I don't understand is are they supposed to damage other ships or just missiles and cans? NPC, PC or both?
I have tried several times to fly in real close to NPC rats (within 1600m and range of smartbomb is 4km) activated the smartbomb and BLAAAAM, nothing, no onscreen messages or messages in log telling me I hurt something with the smartbomb, except of course cans.

Edited by: Rod Blaine on 18/08/2004 10:35:12 The 'smart' part of smartbomb should be read as the prequisite for any pilot using them, not as some kind of characteristic of the weapon, which is about as dumb as a weapon can actually be.
But they DO damage everything withing range of their blast btw. Ships just as well. That's why fitting a smartbomb in high sec emnpire is a profoundly stupid thing to do. Concord doesnt like you damaging billboards or cans in high sec space, lots of people lost expensive ships to pressing the wrong button in high sec space
Anyway, I've used them against NPC interceptors with quite some success. They work fine afaik. _______________________________________________

if youve ever had 3 ravens shooting torps at you, you will love those 2 small samrtbomb II's. 1/6 torps got through to me, wich i could tank. --------------------------

They kill everything around you but somehow leave you unharmed... I¦d say they were smarter than the average bomb. __________ Capacitor research |

That is why I got told: "smart bombs are for smart people only"; using them in a legal war is nice but hitting a station with them in that war is not nice but costs your ship (typhoon #3) to the sentries. Besides of that ... extremely useful! ____________________________________________________

Has anyone else experienced problems with smartbombs not hitting rats when you were 100% sure they were within the range of the smartbombs area of effect?

In some cases, the damage is not logged. This is probably in the cases where a weapon might cause damage to more than 1 target (hence the lack of missile damage done in my logs, although missiles are changed now). So you're probably doing damage although you don't see it. If you lock the rat you should be able to see it.
Your name is funny btw

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Tappadbakomenvagn...good name for asking "stupid" questions.
On the topic, they are the killer on missiles and to massacre unsuspecting frig hordes! Used correctly, even on a Cruiser, you can surprise and kill (certain) battle ships if equiped correctly (or uncorrectly depending on which of the ships you happen to be in). I wouldnt try that as a strategy, but it's fun when it happens! .
Its a power full weapon, seen it beeing used on frigs as well cause small ones will kill small missiles also, the possebilites are (somewhat) endless. You should really try'em out with friends to see what they can do for you.

If you read my first post where I explain that I can not notice any damage done from my smartbomb. Can't see what's so stupid about that question...
And yes it is a great name, I get lots of funny eve-mail from other players commenting on my name
Anyway, thanks all for the replies, when I get online again I will test the "smart"bomb and see if it does hurt the rats within range.
