Well I started on my 14 day trial a couple weeks ago and really enjoy EVE. I spent a lot of time building my character have already made 20 million isk and worked my way up to lvl 2 missions with very nice equipped rifter and a lot of skill training. I read about the special edition retail box and how it had some extra goodies and 60 days time. I happened to have a best buy gift card from my birthday and thought this would be a great thing to buy with it since I am sold and want to extend my trial to membership status. I was very cautious and tried to find out everything I could about upgrading my account this way. I contacted several of the ISD people in rookie help channel asking them if I could use the retail box with my trial subscription and they all said it was possible. So I get home with my box and go to extend my trial with the card in the box. Directly after entering it I get a new page with red text that says "You have entered a retail box key if you want the extras in the retail box you will have to create a new account" then it says if you just want to add the 60 day time to my trial account then continue. Of course I continued because I am not about to forfeit 1.3 mil skill points and all the isk and progression I have made. It looks like I could have made a new account with the extras and then paid 20$ to transfer my trial character??? , no thanks. I think anyone that bought the retail box has every right to keep their trial character and receive all the extras because first of all there was no information stating that this would not be possible.
I urge anyone that has had this problem to petition so we can fix this problem and all get what we paid for. I am disappointed that they overlooked this issue and see it has a lot of people confused. If you have had this issue yourself and got help from a csr please let me know any information you have about this. I hope that when I get a respoonse from my petition they are going to sort this out.

You're not the first and you more than likely won't be the last. The information you needed was available on the forums at least and when I get my box I'll see if it's listed on there somewhere.
Also note that trial characters cannot be transferred, so you wouldn't have to pay $20 for that

Edited by: Destination SkillQueue on 20/03/2009 22:41:09 The only thing the box says about any special offer is a small area in the bottom front. It says
EXCLUSIVE
>>60 day game time >>instant war access >>advanced career guide >>VIP pass >>special edition ship
It makes no mention of any limitations to the offered items. Actually those are the only words relating to the offer. Everything else talks about EVE in general.
I browsed a few sites when buying my copy and none of them mentioned anything about the special exclusive offer. They just sold it as EVE online the game and provided a link to the front page of this site.
Originally by: Xennith whats the problem? there was a warning, you clicked ok.
Problem is the lack of information about the special offer. People had no idea that existing accounts, even trial accounts it seem, were excluded from some of the items in the special offer. Getting the info after you have bought the game and scratched the GTC is a bit too late to be of any use.

Uh yea I was warned after I spent 40$ on the game. Unacceptable. Would you rather have me wait in limbo for days not being able to play? The problem is listed very in depth in my post.

Actually yes it does. On the front cover it says "EXCLUSIVE QUICK START*"
in big letters with an asterisk after it. Then look at the back of the box, bottom right hand corner under the ESRB rating. It states "*Quick Start items only available with new account activation"

The character activation is $20 because you pay an extra $5 for that trial game time. You can actually activate right when you start a trial and you'll keep your trail days.

Couldn't find a pic of the back of the box and I'm too lazy to scan mine right now.
Thanks for the information. As I suspected this is a case of "thinking without reading". Many people (in general) think they are (or should be) entitled to something without actually bothering to find out if they are.

Your box looks different than mine, whereas your box says "EXCLUSIVE QUICK START*" mines just says "EXCLUSIVE" and lists all the fancy stuff you get for buying it. Though since you mention ESRB I suppose you have north american box. I have PEGI which is EU equivalent and I definitely have nothing about about quick start items and new accounts only.
Having also been trial account player I feel it was appropriate introduction to EVE when the CCP itself was first one to scam me over the game. Though must say whole thing was very poorly done and given choice now I would not have bought the sodding useless box.

So you are clogging the petition queues needlessly and after you will complain that response time is sluggish too...well it's your own fault too, one will do the trick 99.99% of the time (at +/-0.01%)
please delete the excessive petitions and stop griefing ccp staff.

GMs are quite busy after patches. Not only do they have to deal with people like you, but there also are real problems to fix. The annoying thing is, they will spend (/waste) time answering your petition

This is the answer to the conundrum at hand. It is not CCP's fault that Atari did not put the appropriate disclaimer on the EU boxes. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

I'm left wondering why we have the "Redeem" feature added just before box release, with nothing in the box to "Redeem" :)
I sympathise with the OP - if you hadn't followed all the media releases and forums religiously, you wouldn't be aware that the exclusive shuttle is only available to accounts created and activated with the GTC in the box.

I'm pretty new to eve and I bought the box from retail without having checked the board before. After I got it home I did double check on the boards as to how exactly it worked because I got a message when I signed in. You didn't really need to follow anything religiously or even know next to anything about the game, just needed to use your reading skills, a little common sense, and have the willingness to ask a question or two if you need to.

If you look at that box he posted again, you will see it has the PEGI rating. Until I see a scan of your box, I am going to assume you just failed at reading. We could keep talking about this all day but you're too busy reading my sig instead.

I also have a UK box bought from amazon.co.uk - nothing on that site or my box about it being new accounts only. I'm not complaining though - the main reason I bought the box was it was the cheapest way to get 60 days time due to the value of the pound again the euro at the moment! Although I was looking forwards to the "exclusive" advanced career guide, only to be pointed to this website.
And yes, publisher is Atari.

I also made this very silly mistake and didn't read the back of the box.
I was planning to buy the boxed edition and convert the GTC to plex and take the shuttle, etc for my main. I later found out this was not possible but unlike the OP, I'm not annoyed about it.
Sure, using the GTC can make you some cash but now I have a mining alt that's training up her Hulk skills while my main trains her shield skills in a new shuttle =)
When the mining alt is ready (which should be before the 60 days are up), I can always move it to my main's account or sell it for some nice crisp ISKies.
I guess you just have to learn to see the advantage in a situation. |

Well - I see we have all the usual folks rushing in to attack a poster with an opinion which differs from theirs.
Getting away from whether or not the box says anything about it - I fail to see why accounts can't be upgraded with the key to add the relevant items - most other MMOs allow you to waste money on another box to get 'special' stuff added to your account. Guess what? - it sells more boxes - surprised CCP don't want to do that.
Now - away we go with the 'if you like other MMOs so much go play them' replies - this community is so immature it amazes me.
