Not an easy question really, in our world where there are those we call carebears that engage in pvp willingly, and those we call pirates who go ratting for days at a time. How would you put a concrete definition on a carebear? Can you perhaps pick one definitive trait?
Two ideas I'm torn between atm are; a carebear can't shoot someone they don't think would shoot them first. Or, alternately, a carebear flies ships he can't afford to lose (and most likely then whines about losing it)...

Of course, the most important thing to notice in this discussion is that here on the forums, there's really no way of telling when you've stopped reading someone's post and started the sig. |

Carebears, if given the option and all other things being equal, will tend to avoid PVP.
Many carebears will avoid PVP at all costs. Some will avoid it if they can prevent an impact to their game. Others will engage in PVP as they feel it is necessary to protect something or other, but will start doing non-PVP (or at least non-pewpew) stuff again as soon as their objectives are acheived or the threat is removed.
Scenarios:
* Miners who will never engage or fight back, will move to other systems, stay in NPC corps. * Miners, ratters, industrials who will band together to defend a POS or hire mercs to do so, but otherwise stay docked up during a wardec. * An indy/mining corp in hisec that gets wardec'd. They switch out to all T1 frigates and cruisers, a few in HACs, and fight back. Maybe they hire mercs to augment if they're feeling really threatened. When the dec is over, they go back to their peaceful mining and missioning.
All of the above are "carebears". The real issue, in my opinion, with the term, is that it's pejorative. The sense is that being a "carebear" is somehow lesser, because you prefer your space pixels to move in different patterns.
tl;dr- it's a game, stop worrying about labels and play the ****ing thing.

Some considerations of these definitions in the context of eve, as I'm asking about eve carebears:
1. Any experienced carebear recognises that pvp (ships + stuff being destroyed) is what drives the market forces and does a lot of good for them and their industrial / commercial interests.
2. This one is anyone that whines, 'nuff said.
3. There is no such thing as strictly no pvp in eve.
4. Plenty of so called carebears (my CEO for one) just don't care about getting ganked, they just get merrily on with the game and go and pick up another of whatever they were flying.
5. There is no colouring in eve there is no action that doesn't pit you against other players, even just running missions.
6. Eve is a bastion of hope...
Well, seems whiners may be the suitable answer.

I don't agree with the idea that a carebear is just someone who hates PVP.
In my opinion, a carebear is someone who whines and can't adapt to a changing situation. This can apply to industry characters, as well as PVPers. A recent example, the missile "nerf" where missiles were brought in line with guns. So much whining. -------------------------------- CCP can patch away bugs, but they can't patch away stupidity. |

I'd say a carebear isn't really anything to do with combat. You can have pirates who spend days ratting in empire to get their sec up, and you can have carebears who flip cans in empire and kill people. 'Carebear' is more of a state of mind. Carebears are people who cannot accept that occasionally you will lose assets, and will avoid risk at all cost. They are the people who will spend months ratting frigates in empire rather than spend a day in lowsec to get the same money. They are the people who protest on forums to get any and all PvP removed from the game, and to boost highsec to the point of stupidity. They are the people who fly command ships in empire flipping cans to kill week-old noobs in frigates. They are the people who will scream obscenities and hurl death threats at you if you so much as miss off a zero (or several) on a contract, while at the same time pretending to hold the moral high-ground.
The following are NOT necessarily carebears:
High-value traders - they take large risks every time they place a market order. Manufacturers - for the same reason (the market is PvP too)

After a while of constant war, I've been found to say "not another bloody war". I do like to carebear it up occasionally.

Those who don't understand that EVE is different from other games out there, and that it actually requires risk, work, and possibility of loss to make money. I'd say it has more to do with a players mindset then their actions.

I have been told, in very strong language in local, that I am a carebear because of certain "activities" I participate in while in High Sec and because I don't want to take these "activities" out to Low Sec or 0.0.
I have no problems with the label. I have been called worse.

Edited by: IHaveTenFingers on 24/03/2009 21:04:05 Carebear:
(1) One who plays solely for personal gain with no sense of duty to those they "ally" themselves with.
(2) One who claims to be harmless and peaceful, but upon being killed in lowsec or 0.0 (likely by their own ignorance or arrogance) Begin a marathon hate mail / smackfest in local that seems to follow a typical pattern from victim to victim.
(3) Any member of a corporation / alliance that requires multiple 'diplomats' (typically very obnoxious and rude people themselves) to fix all the problems they cause.

I would agree with this, at least for EVE.
When people say the word "carebear", an image of a high-sec mining operation usually comes to mind. But really, can-flippers, salvage-ninjas and those who bait mission-runners (not to mention the mission-runners themselves) are little better, in the sense that they usually avoid situations where there is a possibility they might actually lose something.

The term carebear is used for a player who would prefer to not take part in [PvP] combat in favor of playing cooperatively with other players or alone completing mission and earning ISK uninterrupted. *-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^*-*^-^ By the way, I am an Ishtar and T2 sentries fan.
