Edited by: Lord Azraiel on 19/08/2004 19:21:00 Simple question, which do you think would be better to use on a claw, autocannons or artillery. I'm torn between the two, but am leaning towards autocannons because of the better DOT and tracking, but they have very short range. I like the range and DPS (Damage per Shot) of the artilleries too. Help me please "I'm comin' for ya, and Hell's comin' with me!" |

Autocannons are just like blasters, only half as good. Using 250/280s at least makes the claw something other than a crappy taranis clone.

I agree with Sphalerite
You can actually make the Claw faster than a Taranis if you don't intend to get under 10 km. Right now, Taranis is the best up close and personal intie, so we Claw drivers need to get our advantages somewhere else.
But its very true, the artie will have a tougher time hitting at speed. Calls for smart tactics

Autocannons definitely do more damage, but with artillery, you can orbit outside of web range, and if you have good skills, maintain a MWD and a warp disruptor.

The ROF on autocannons, combined with the bonus on the Claw, makes them an amazingly damaging weapon over time, despite the lower damage modifier compared with the artillery or howitzers. Here's some numbers for your interest:
Claw, 200mm Autocannon, Gunnery 5, Rapid Firing 2, EMP S Ammo (11 damage) ROF = 1.39s Damage Modifier: 2.23 Damage Per Second: 17.65
Claw, 250mm Artillery, Gunnery 5, Rapid Firing 2, EMP S Ammo (11 damage) ROF = 4.73s Damage Modifier: 4.47 Damage Per Second: 10.4
Claw, 280mm Howitzer, Gunnery 5, Rapid Firing 2, EMP S Ammo (11 damage) ROF = 5.85s Damage Modifier: 6.38 Damage Per Second: 12
The above is everything rounded to 2 decimal places, and assumed zero resistance to different damage types (eg hull). Also, none of the numbers have accounted for Small Projectile Turret or Surgical Strike damage bonuses, but for the sake of comparison, that doesn't really matter, as they would all derive the same bonuses from related skills.
The DOT on the Autocannons is massively ahead of the other turrets in the class, and comparable to the damage output on my Crow with Bloodclaw light missiles From a purely damage perspective, the choice seems fairly easy, but the range is also going to be a consideration.
For NPCs, that close a range is going to be very challenging and probably will mean a quick way to lose the ship. For PvP though, it would probably be quite feasible...you have to get close range to web/scramble anyway and chances are most other players turrets won't track an Interceptor too well at such close range (just keep the MWD off while orbitting). Regardless, the Claw is the fastest fighting ship in the galaxy and a very powerful gunboat, make the most of it's bonuses and keep the MWD off unless you need to get in/out of range or avoid missiles.

but what you failed to take into that autocannons cant track very well. so damage aside they worthless, i suggest you use lasers or blasters, even with out the race bonus youll most likly do more DoT, unfortunatly the developers have no intention of lisening to what happens in the real game, instead they like to live in there fantasy world thats called the test server were i think the rules of the game must be somewhat different.

For that to be disturbing, it had to be true. On the turrets, depends on what your gonna be doing really, can't say this is better all the time. The trick is bringing the right setup for the right situation. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I run a Claw with 2 rockets and 2 200mm AC's with Phased plasma.
So far I've ganked a battlebadger and a taranis. Like anything else player skill is far more important than ship setup. Go with what you like, and what plays to your personal strengths.
The only ceptor that I'm worried about is a Crow, and only because of that extra web.

I only just got my claw, and with 3 howies it seems to do pretty well against 'normal' NPC frigs. Haven't yet been up against other Interceptors, and I doubt if howies will be any good against them...

Actually I would use medium laser beam I's or their named counterparts. Those, despite the name, are small energy turrets. Tracking is awesome, range is great, and no ammo and little cap use with decent skills. Projectiles at all levels suck with the new system in place. -----

Hi.
I fly a claw with 2*RLs and 2*125mm autos. I have an AB and some kind of cap rate thingy in the mid slots and named gyros and tracking enhancer in the lows.
It works fantastic on all level three kill missions I have tried.
I also considered a 3 * 250/280 setup but figured that would put me further away from my enemy so would make me easier to hit. I cant remember why I thought this but it seemed to make sense at the time.
Surely by definition an "interceptor" shouldnt be good with "artilery" guns.
I have not tried PVP in it yet as im not too sure about "soloing" and I either find empty systems or too many possible enemies.
