Hey guys,
Quick question for the experts.
I was traveling through rancer (low sec) the other day in my covops frigate, cloaked. As I warped into the gate, I uncloaked and jumped. However, in an instant, I was also in hull...shields and armour gone.
How did they target, lock and fire so quickly? I only saw a drake for a second and then jumped. Couldnt have been a bomb as it was low sec.
Just curious, as I've never been spotted in my covops, let alone fired upon.
Thanks |

Rancer is usually full of smartbombing BSes. It's generally a no-fly zone for anyone smart. |

You had more luck than one of my toons, also traveling in a cov-ops frig. last thing he saw was the message "JUMPING", the next thing was the pod peacefully floating in the homestation. Death by Smartbomb. Smartbombs do not need a target lock in order to deal damage to your ship, they deal damage in an area of effect. It is a common tactic for players to sit in the warp vector or jump points of incoming and outgoing ships to a stargate and constantly cycle their Smartbombs at a stagger so that they will be dealing damage in an area around their ship. This tactic is mainly used to destroy ships before they actually land on the stargate. This tactic is not considered an exploit as it is allowed by the normal game mechanics. Hope that helps. |

They didn't target you at all. They used smartbombs. |

They wer just offgrid inline with the gate you came from. With smartbombs activated and enough of them you woulda popped. The drake was to scoop your loot. |

Im guessing nothing,
Get yourself a scout and make bounce points on gates. Not just a null sec thing, as Disco in Low sec is popular.

Sniffing out gate camps via the statistics in the star map is also key to avoiding death. A good indication of a disco party is a high number of pods killed in last hour/ 24 hours compared to the number of ships popped. Smart Bombers normally don't turn their modules off once your ship is toast and fry your pod before you can warp out.
If you need to go to low sec, set your destination but filter it by "shortest" rather than "safest". Often times there will be one high sec system that juts into low sec and the route calculator will funnel you through that system because it has fewer jumps in low sec. Gate campers often take that into account and live on the other side of those systems. If you see a particular system regularly camped, put it on your avoidance list.
Setting it to 'shortest' might take you through an extra few low sec systems, but they are much less likely to be camped.
Either way, check your statistics before departing and use a jump clone with cheaper or no implants. I don't make minerals. I just make ore 20% cooler. |

i think that was me. scout announced a covert ops jumping. was thinking to myself: he is going to uncloak in my bomb range. and low and behold, the covert ops DID in fact uncloak (and tried to warp away) inside my smartbomb range, scrambled to press the G3 key and managed to pop the frig and pod in one go. it did put a huge grin on my face. |
