Hey all Ed here, I'm looking for a good cruiser fit for Gh. Yes I realize it is more ideal to harvest gas in a BS or BC but I can only afford an Opsrey for now. I am new to mining let alone gas cloud harvesting, but I need to make some dough so im willing to learn :D What I have so far: Hi 3xGH (only at 3 + only 3 hard pts.) 1x scan probe launcher
Mids not sure about this but i guess some cap recharge?
Low 3x cargo expanders
p.s. plz keep in mind I will not be in 0.0 alone, so i will have some form of protection :)
Cheers, Ed

Edited by: Tierius Fro on 27/03/2009 19:37:02 I use a Moa. It is great.
Cargo expanders are not real useful, as the gas takes way too much m3.

This man speaks the truth. Only cruiser (IIRC) that can support 5 Harvesters and Probe launcher. ----- Originally by: Zaqar

A maller also has 5 turrets and an utility slot, enough CPU to fit it and a load of low slots for cargo expanders. -------- Ideas for: Mining

Wow! I can't believe I haven't thought of using the moa. That would be perfect. Sadly I don't have the skills to fly a maller but it's stats seem comparable to the ugly ass moa. Thanks for the suggestions mates!
So for mids in the moa should I tank or go cap recharge? My gut tells me tank but, I'm not too sure how demanding the gas harvsters are...
Thanks again, Ed |

After any initial rats, I have never seen a rat spawn in a gas site. I have harvested many low sec sites, and one in unknown space. You don't need cap for the harvesters, so put whatever you want for defense.

I used pretty much exactly the OP's Osprey setup for my first-ever gas harvesting, in a WH, the other night (I only have Gas Harvesting trained to lvl3). It worked out just fine. I used the mids for defense stuff, but I didn't need to (no sleepers popped up). I didn't have any cap issues. My Osprey had about 1000m3 of cargohold, and that worked out fine - one thing I found, relative to "real" mining, is that your cargohold fills up much more slowly - it was taking me about 20 minutes of harvesting to fill up.

It's pretty easy to tell if you're being probed these days.

I've done maybe seven clouds now, and I've had one spawn. The rats spawned 100km from the cloud, though, so I had ample time to leave if it had been necessary.

Sure. But I'd much rather just sit there with a cloak on and passively protect myself, rather than actively looking for people probing me.
I could draw an analogy that's probably inappropriate for these forums and justify why having a cloak while probing is a good idea.
Regardless, Murphies laws exist for a reason, aka "Better safe than sorry".
I mean, what else would you use that free high slot on a ferox for? A second probe launcher? With nothing but gas harvesters, you won't be making wrecks to salvage or tractor in for looting. ---

if you got midslots free, put in shield extenders. i think alot of you have been lucky. i have harvested 3 clouds sofar, all unknown space was from highsec wormholes. 1 cloud had 4 sentry guns guarding it, another had 6 guns. these guns can hit you from 99km for around 800 damage each.. between 80-85 km i have been hit for (wrecking) 1500 damage. the extra shield hit points might help buy you enough time to turn around and warp out. just something for you to think about.

I use a Ferox and it works fine, 5 Harvesters, Probe Launcher and an Assault Missile Launcher (cloak wont work around Gas sites). Can carry five light drones, though they are mostly useless against Sleeper frigates as they kill the drones very very fast, so fit an Assault Missile Launcher instead. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

Took a look at a W-Space Ladar site in my Cheetah, didn't realize something had decloaked me. Was looking at the info window on the sentry guns and BAM/FLASH.....no more Cheetah. Sleeper sentry guns mean business...
