I've found that my satellite receiver being connected to the phone line even with the filter would randomly dc me from eve and not let me back on till i unplug it. i dont know about any ports tho. Would be worth a try for some ppl having trouble to unplug everything from the phone line if you have dsl internet. |

Edited by: Momoro on 10/05/2009 22:14:54 I have the socket closed issued, but mostly when my client is idle for a while. Rebooting my router seems to help. I think I have some ideas on what is happening.
First of all, note that EvE online uses TCP connections rather than UDP connections. This means that a stateful connection is actually established and has to be maintained. This has the advantage of providing certain guarantees of packet order and delivery, but this also makes EvE a lot more susceptible to various factors which may break the connection.
From reading the various anecdotes, its clear that we are dealing with a heterogeneous set of problems. There are a group of people who cannot even log in for an extended period of time due to rapid disconnects. There is another group of people who mostly disconnect upon idling.
Rapid disconnects probably indicate a high frequency event occurring in the communication path between the client and the server. Flaky routers, modems, wiring, or ISPs could all be possible. Many have tried using ICMP pings to show a lack of problems, but this is not completely diagnostic for a TCP connection, as TCP dictates much more stringent conditions to keep a connection open. EvE may exacerbate these problems by trying to send a lot of data very quickly (such as on log in and session changes such as jumping). Instead of pinging, try using a TCP traceroute. Also seeing if you can open a telnet on port 26000 to Tranquility (87.237.38.200) might be helpful since that is a TCP connection.
Disconnection upon idling is indicative of a different phenomena where older, inactive connections are being selectively dropped. This condition can occur in some hardware where their connection tables have become too full, and they begin dropping older, inactive connections to make room for new ones. Some routers don't do this correctly especially when interacting with certain types of software. One example that seems to cause problems is Bittorrent because it tends to create a lot of connections that do not always close cleanly. Resetting your router will transiently fix your problems, but they will eventually return if the source is not fixed. TCP keepalive might be helpful here also: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/TCP-Keepalive-HOWTO/overview.html , http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms819735.aspx . Using netstat can also help you diagnose what may be opening a lot of connections. A web browser using prefetch, such as Firefox, may also create a lot of messy TCP connections.
Now why might a lot of EvE players have suddenly started to use Bittorrent? First, CCP has made their patches available via bittorrent and given their size, BT might be the way to download 1 GB+ sized patches. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, CCP also introduced BT DNA and BITS scheduling within the last two patches. If you have a DNA applet in your Control Panel, it is installed. BT DNA might be causing your router's connection tables to fill up, so disabling it might help. Rebooting your router and disabling bittorrent related software should also alleviate some problems.

Best post I've seen on the subject... Moreover the most probable!
Thanks momoro, I hope it will help CCP or us to fix that.
Btw, I am using Firefox, but not Bittorrent at all. My antivirus is Avast, do you guys have the same browser and antivirus? And do guys who don't have discos Internet Explorer? It might help to collect such infos...

Edited by: Ms Wolfie on 11/05/2009 23:14:30 I also use Avast!, bittorent and use Chrome as my browser.
I haven't noticed any particualr diference in the probablility of DCing if the browser is in use, the anti-virus is off, and i dont run bitorent when loging into EvE.
Edit: Oh and Ive always used these programs (except Chrome) before and never had issues of this sort with EvE

The effect occurs even if you just use the offending programs before (not necessarily while) running EvE. If the programs are actually the problem, then what would help is resetting your router(s) and computer before running EvE and not running the offending programs before hand.
What happens is that the offending programs open up connections while they are running. After you stop using the program, the connections stay in your router's memory. So if you use bittorrent and it opens a lot of faulty connections (possibly due to a router bug), the effect will last until you reset your router. You could have run an offending program one day, and then you could see the effect in EvE for months.

We are still gathering data on this, we have recently made some network infrastructure changes which may help resolve connection issues.
However it is more important now than ever to get reports about this issue. The extra logging we put on Sisi a few weeks ago has now been in place on TQ for a while and we are currently in the process of gathering cases that look suspicious for closer inspection. Please include Logserver output and details about your connection (connection/router type, broadband/wireless f.ex.) in the report.
The patch notes entry is probably due to a miscommunication between departments, an internal ticket regarding a part of the investigation was probably misunderstood as proof of resolution by the community team. I will look into it and have the patch notes corrected.

I sent the report 3 days ago, Got this:
Thank you for your bugreport - ID:79609 Title: Socket closed error We are already aware of this problem, and have added your bugreport to the existing issue in our defect tracking system.
The BugHunter Team
Nothing else since then, and still getting the error with all acounts (playing in the same computer more than 2 years, different accounts, alts, same ISP, etc... no issues until May the 13th. My brother could log in with my account from a different country, but I still cannot do it.
No more answers from CCP, no more info, no more help, and of course, time paid in advance is not going to be reimbursed, isn't CCP? pathetic....

I have been loosing connection continuously since the 1.2 patch but it only seems to effect one of my accounts, the rate at which I get the socket closed error has greatly increased after the patch.

First off, I'm only posting on this thread since it seems that CCP is paying attention here. Since the latest patch, my socket closed problem has gotten worse. Eve is basically unplayable for me at this point. I can change skills but any attempt to fly around or do anything results in the error within the first 5 minutes.
CCP should consider this as a Category 1 bug. It causes a crash to desktop, which in most QA environments is unacceptable. When these types of issues are present, the development team should stop what they are currently working on and focus on the critical issues.
If STOL was public, I would quickly be dropping my account. It's a good thing Eve doesn't have much competition for this genre, or they would be seeing an economic impact with these types of issues.
In my 3+ years of playing before, I've never encountered this type of issue. It's very disappointing that the features and patches that attracted me to return to Eve are preventing me from playing.

I started having this problem around the 12th of May. At this point eve is not playable. I am only able to stay connected for around 5 to 10 minutes before my connection is terminated. I am not using a wireless connection and am not having any other problems with my internet service. I have tried changing my port and leaving the help chat open as suggested by ccp. Nothing has worked. I have logged the disconnect with the log server and run ping plotter. CCP was not able to determine anything from these results.
I have never had connection issues with Eve until now and I don't see the point in me paying for a service that I cannot use.

I worked fine yesterday, 5.16.09. But today I couldn't last 5 minutes. The only difference I noticed is that yesterday there were around 34k peeps on. Today there were over 42k. Nothing has changed on my computer or network. So all indications are that it's definitely something on CCP's end. I'm going to continue to post my findings here.

Since the .2 patch, I've been getting the Socket Closed error around every 5 minutes. Didn't matter what time of day or how many peeps were on. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new wifi router (NetGear) and ditched the old DLink.
The good news is that I no longer get the socket errors. The bad news is that my system reboots if I try to use autopilot. Will the severe bugs ever end?

I am also having this problem, and I think in my case it is due to packet loss caused by Level3. Particularly bad are ae-61-51.ebr1.Atlanta2.Level3.net and ae-73-70.ebr3.Atlanta2.Level3.net, which combined often spike my packet loss up to 30% for a moment.
Will the Logserver thing work on Tranquility, or does it only work on Singularity?
