I recently got a good friend of mine into eve. He chose to be gallante and i've never flown their ships so I don't know how to advise him. I want to give him a good start to the game because I know those first few weeks are when most people give up because of the steep learning curve.
So anyone out there have any good advice for what he should fly?
Mostly he does level 1 missions by himself and joins me on level 2 missions. I fly an ac fitted hurricane with passive shield tank. What gallante frigate would be good for him to join me with. Also I plan on taking him out into low sec for some ratting and missions out there to get him exposed to the dangers of pvp early as I can afford to replace his ships for him.

Definitely the Incursus. It's a good Hybrid Rail ship, supports a single Drone and is EvE's version of a space motorcycle with a jousting lance.
We could keep talking about this all day but you're too busy reading my sig instead.

As a longer term goal, have your friend train up for Ishkur (T2 incursus) with T2 light drones. That little assault frig is seriously powerful for its size. Probably take around a month of training to get everything trained for it to be decent. (Assuming he trains up some learning skills first) "Boo hoo. Cry some more." CCP Whisper

Regarding the Ishkur: or a Taranis interceptor if he prefers guns over drones. You can get assault-ship class dps out of a Taranis.
Incursus is a great little T1 frigate for both new and skilled players.
If stepping up to cruisers, Vexor is the droneboat, Thorax is the gunboat.
I promise nothingÖ. --CCP Prism X |

The tristan is a great little frigate, althugh the 2 guns/2 missiles split is wierd. Train up missiles just enough to fit rockets on there and then forget about them. If you're going into lowsec to do a bit of PVP an incursus only has 2 mid slots so you can't fit scramble and web and speed boost, so the tristan is probably better. Stick a nos in one of the "rocket" slots, once you have the skills.
I've been training up scanning skills recently, and I fitted out a tristan to take into one of those "you must be this size or smaller to ride this complex" areas. The 'fat man' kicked arse so should do the same for level 1s.

It has 3 mid slots, so it can. __________________________________________________________

The Tristan is a twisted freak child. Stick with the Incursus until you're ready to move up to the Thorax/Vexor. Beyond that, he'll figure it out.

Ah ... I like the Tristan better than the Incursus.
The only down side is that you won't have that much use later on for any missile skills you train.
3 lows, 3 mids, 4 highs. Better Shield & Armor. Slightly Better Cap, PG & CPU. It's slower but for flying Level I missions I put an Over Drive Injector and a Cold Gas Arc Jet AB on it and it does just fine.
The other thing about that extra high slot is that you can put a salvager there if you are ratting as well as that NOS mentioned above.

I've used both, the incursus seems to be the easier ship to fit and fly (because it isn't a mixed loadout)
The Tristan reminds me of the Merlin and a bit of the Rifter. They are mixed loadout ships with no bonus to one of the weapon systems (The Rifter at least can mount 3 guns vs the 2/2 arrangement of the others)
For starting out it's usually better to focus on one weapon system type especially early on.
One trade off on the tristan is no drone bay (course that is now a skill you got to train for... but as he is sticking to the one race ship a needed one... even on the blaster boats)

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 03/04/2009 08:34:29 If you click on the link to the Tristan above - you will see that it does indeed have a drone.
Yes, the Tristan and the Merlin are a lot alike. You can fit either with Blasters and Rockets or Railguns and Missiles. The Merline has no drone. The Tristan has 3 lows and 3 mids where as the Merlin had 2 lows and 4 mids. Both have 4 highs. Both have 2 gun hard points and to launcher hard points.
Yes the Incursus is a little easier to fit but it never bothered me. *shrug*

The Merlin has a stronger shield the Tristan more armor (as you would expect).
The Merlin is actually slower than the Tritan but then Caldari ships are known for being slow.

been flying both caldari and gallente ships for a while. Haven't bothered to looks at them much.
One thing about the Incursus is it can actually fit a decent shield buffer even if an armor tanker: 3 Light Ion Blasters/ 3 125mm railguns ; 1 MN Afterburner, 2 Small Shield Extenders ; Overdirve injector, Magnetic field stabalizer and a Hobgoblin in the pear tree (all tech 1)
Makes it a good mission runner fit. As your skills go up it's easy to upgrade to an armor tank (still want to shield tank it... but that's from flying caldari more lately)

On the other hand, 2 low slots is a bit of a drawback too. You're right though, you can fit scramble and web and ab on an incursus, and it is a bit faster than the tristan.
And the tristan is a bit of a freak child with its missile slots, and the missile skills you learn will see very little use on gallente ships. This is true. The skills to use rockets shouldn't take long to learn or much ISK to buy though, and 2 blasters 1 rocket 1 nos is a pretty nice setup to have.
Thorax or vexor for the step up?
