Edited by: Colonel Cornbread on 02/04/2009 04:05:49 I've been pirating for a while...
Well, not really - I pirated the entire 2nd week of my trial back in August (yes, last year's August) then didn't resub. due to college starting. I recently just started paying and pirating again.
I can definitely say that pirating = NOT dead, though solo / fair / equal pirating may be dead... but that doesn't really matter, everyone always joins a corp and has a friend to pirate with anyway (I'm in the process of getting into a pirate corp, just getting some mandatory skills trained first).
The only thing that stops me from warping in on top of that person I found on the scanner and starting to fight him and hopefully it favors to my side so I can start a conversation to ransom him... 95% of the time, it's always a bigger ship, always a bigger fish, and I can never really know if he's one of guys in that corp which has around 5 members in local atm (as in that he might be bait, and I'll be blobbed) - but it doesn't matter if I'm blobbed, he's in a Battlecruiser, I'm just in a little frigate trying to learn how to pirate. But... that's precisely the thing, I beat most frigates I've encountered, usually since I pick my fights carefully, but I usually get wrecked by destroyers and cruisers - how do I truly know what my capabilities are?

In fact, after you don't learn the GNARKILL ways, we'll throw in a hefty -50M ISK bonus for you to not keep your mouth shut. -------

Yes, but often people are stating that frigates are surprisingly good at killing destroyers and cruisers... while on the other hand, other people are telling me to upgrade spaceship command skills and move up the ship classes in order to kill other destroyers and cruisers.
It seems like a two-sided battle here, to upgrade or to fight against the odds... concerning solo pvp, of course.

But the efficiency ratio of frigates vs a destroyer (or a Cruiser) would favor into the Destroyers / Cruisers side : aka the bigger fish wins most of the time, right?

the problem is you wont kill anything bigger than a frigate that is fit to kill a frigate, a vexor with energy neuts and warriors will eat a frig alive, so learning common fits for all ships and picking fights carefully is important

in real pvp situations, yes. in piracy, an alarmingly low amount of time. especially if you fly with like-minded individuals in similarly fit frigates -+- let's break out the shotguns, we're going to town

I guess I do PVP more often... since I keep running solo... due to lack of friends / corpmates / dog companions.

Get in a cheap ship. Find people. Shoot at them. After you've killed a few and been killed a few times back you get a feel for what you can and cant take.
T2 kitty has gone, and it wasn't a mod request so no agro to them. |

Lol, I already knew about the can trap thing (I had met him the day before while doing my epic arc in between classes), I tried to take him upfront but I knew I'd lose since he should be pvp fitted and the Destroyer I lost was the mission runner I had during trial... had to get rid of it somehow...
In short: we had a 1v1, I lost, I went back to my home system.

Then how would one ransom anyone? Most of the time when you're fighting someone it's always at a planet, belt, etc... does belt count as a celestial?

piracy is all about having a cool name and fifty flashy friends to back you up, if you can cram 50 battleships onto an incursus killmail then you are awesome

What he measn is that Ransoming someone implies risk to the Ransomer. By staying in space on target, in an area where anyone can warp in and engage you, you are in danger yourself.
Anyone can warp to a belt or planet or moon or gate if they see you on D-Scan and choose to do so. This understandably leads to some amusing situations at times when prospective predators warp into a fight between unrelated factions.
Popping them and hoping you get nice loot is quicker and therefore safer unless you hold the field and can deal with anyone else that turns up for the kill.
To give you an example, if Heretic Army ransoms you then you often have a short timeframe to say yes or no and transfer the isk. In that specific case we are also rather impatient and number some with the instincts of a blood crazed stoat in a rabbit hutch, the same is true of a number of pirates and/or pirate corps.
I suggest you read up on some of the topics regarding ransoming people.

imo depends how bored people are.
Also, perhaps its a personality defect but while i enjoy solo roams i do find aforementioned 50 BS and a carrier vs noobship comedy mails a fleeting amusement.
