I've just picked up a punisher. The only other Amarr ship I have is the bestower so i'm not to familiar with lasers although my skills aren't too bad (sml laser lvl 4, motion prediction lvl 3 and amarr frig lvl 3 - soon to be 4). What's the best range to fight with lasers. Using med beam lasers and I/R crystals I can get an optimim range of over 14km but using Gamma brings this down to 7.5km.
So then I thought why not use the punisher like a blasterax and go in close range using a MWD? Med pulse lasers have better tracking but lower range and the gamma's take it down to around 5.5km.
Work is really busy atm and I haven't had time to test a close range setup so I'd appreciate any advice from other punisher pilots. I'm not after specific setups as such but am more interested in how people use this ship against NPC's.
Oh and is armour tanking viable on a frigate?

I use medium beams with multifrequency crystals and usually orbit around 7.5km. Using a 10mn afterburner allows me to avoid light missiles and most of the incoming fire from NPCs. I have had no problem with any level 3 agent kill mission with this setup.
I have not tried to armour tank it at the moment, nor have I tried medium pulse on it yet though I think that could be more effective.

Pulse lasers all the way!
They track well, they do nice damage and witht he cap bones, can fire them forever.
I fit dual lights, so i can fit a 400mm nanofiber in low, and a small repairer. -----------

thanks for the replies. I was looking at using it for lvl3 missions so that really helps.
I hadn't considered an AB instead of a MWD as I'd presumed I'd get clobbered before I got into range.

yeah I agree Pulse lasers are the way to go, cap helper and they hit harder than beams, plus they are easier to fit.
I run mine, like the above, 10mn afterburner, tried micro warp but found that I got hit way more with that active than my afterburner.
Then I fit dual pulse lasers, dual Nasofrau (sp), mids get my 10mn (microwarp sometimes), 2nd left empty, lows get 3 core boosters, a 200 armor extender, small armor repairer.
If I run the Microwarp, I take off one of the nasafraus for another turret, but can't fit more with the powercore the afterburner takes up.
I also keep @ 1.5 km so that my Nasafraus never get out if range...

Can you tell me exactly how you can fight a level 3 kill mission item with a punisher? I'd be afraid of getting smeared!

Drusilla,
Against most lvl3 rats, you just fly really fast at close range and they don't hit you. I have done some lvl3 missions in a punisher before and only got hit on approach, once i started orbiting i didn't get hit again. You can out run any missles they throw at you, and cruisers can't track you for crap. It does take a while to cut them down with only 3 lasers. Also by using a Nos you can gain some cap back. The frigs on the other hand are a little harder because they have better tracking, but the same principle applies. It's almost more fun than using a Blasterax sometimes.
