I have been looking into developing a tool to parse the data in the game logs during combat. The idea is to have eve open in a window and this application keeping track of damage done vs received and hit rates with various weapons. That way I can look over and see that 75% of my autocannon shots are missing or other similar information. An advanced version might recommend different orbit distances to maximize damage given, minimize damage received and other stuff.
Couple of questions: 1. Would something like this be against CCP rules for 3rd party apps? 2. Does something like this already exist (I have seen a tool to parse out a log, but not in real time)?
Thanks

you are using something that is avaiable for everybody, don't use something the way it's not intented to (like BACON), aren't modifing the client... Seems ok'ish to me.

I've been using an app I made that monitors chat logs realtime to alert me when chat activity happens in a certain few channels I sit in for quite some time now and have not been contacted by CCP to say wtf r I doings, so I'm assuming it's legit.

Most problematic issue with this application would be that EVE does not keep single log for the session... I've been hit by no less than hundreds of log files from only one game session in the past... -- Thanks CCP for cu |

This is the app so far: Link to image of application
As you can see from the image I am fighting a couple of rats. I have a 100% hit rate with 120 hits in the last minute with a dps of nearly 50. The rats have a 41.46% hit rate and a much lower dps. I have gotten around the problems of the multiple files by only loading the most recent file. The page updates every 10 seconds. The file is usually within 5 seconds of being up to date so the data is about 15 seconds old.
Does anyone think that this is usefull? Remember that it is in a very rough state right now.
Some features I would like to add: Break down damage by weapons / enemy Fleet ability (everyone in fleet using app to get an overall picture of the battle)

I think a fleet option would be fantastic, especially for the FC.
Create a log-in group, with the FC as admin - FC / admins can see overall, typical fleet members not so much.

looks like quite a nice little tool, any chance you'll be releasing to the public?

Looks good, man. If it's not too hard, I would like to see a breakdown of what dps each group is dishing out against you. btw, what are you using to program this? |

Thanks for all the positive response. As guessed, the application is developed in C# on the .net framework 3.5 (started it to learn about linq). I will definetly be adding features to report on damage with groupings and the like.
Adding fleet features will take a while. They either need a central server or setup some sort of peer-to-peer system. Obviously the whole point is to help the fleet commander out. Although I have ideas that would be good for fleet members as well.
Even in it's current state it is pretty nice. I was playing around with a new fit ruppy earlier and this tool helped me tweek orbit distances and ab usage. It was exactly what I wanted this tool to be for.
I am not sure how it should be distributed. Do people create apps and sell them (in eve currency not for real money of course)? Or does that go against the spirit of this forum?

Some people make you pay to use an application, but most don't. For the ones who don't it's pretty much up to the users to decide for themselves whether they think it's worth donating some isk towards the developer.
I would first suggest you find a license that fits how "open" you want the app to be, or if you don't want anyone else working on it at all.

You could host it at sourceforge.net, GPL/other open licences are good, if you host it here... |

I am surprised that there is not better eve-universe distribution concept setup then to use standard real-world things like sourceforge. If I visualize what is happening here, my character is creating a neat application while he pilots his ship. Most of the development is done while I am playing (this has led to some issues with me not paying attention to local). In effect it is my character who is doing the work and he should 'own' the code. I have no trouble giving away the code, but he would. Could there not be some market setup in eve or a cooperation that distributes these products for a nominal eve-isk fee.
Now I, like other people, do use things like eft and eveMon and certainly appreciate the work people have put into these tools and appreciate the fact that they are free. These tools add greatly to the eve universe and a the result of a lot of hard work by the developers. However if there was a 50,000 ISK fee or the like attached to using these tools it would incorporate them further into the game, provide incentive to the developers, while not causing a reduction in their use due to cost.
For my combat focused application it may make sense to donate it to eve-university or agony unleashed for use as a training tool in exchange for some eve-universe type credit. Then they could distribute it and Toterra would get a medal or a 'Toterra chair of information technology' to make him feel honoured.
Anyways I am just throwing around ideas here. My tool is certainly not yet ready for distribution (seems to crash on vista and has a lousy UI). However it would not really add to my game experience to simply distribute the tool on a real-world website.

Take a look at Eve Commander made by Woddel, he has a subscription that is auto billed via Evemail and depends on your current bank acount level. max is 8 mill per 3 month period if you have over 500 mill in your account. Its such an awesome tool that I would willingly pay much more than the 100k isk per day it works out at.
Since there are no working log damage calculators out there since "Eve Combat log Analyzer" ceased to function after the Quantum patch, I am sure many would be interested in your tool and I for one would pay for it.

The tool is coming along. I was wondering if people could send me some sample combat logs from their gamelog directory so I can try it out with different weapon loadouts then I currently sport. Also, if anyone was interested in beta testing the app email me as well that would also be great. Send me an email with some combat logs and interest in beta-testing at or contact me in-game.
Thanks to all

will drop you some logs once I get home
BTW I think the mod dislike posting of e-mail addresses on the forums, seen one thread locked for it I'm new to eve so might be wrong

I did not get any log files at the e-mail address I provided. Can you resend checking that the email is correct. Also, is anyone interested in testing out this application?
Thanks

I'm willing to test out this application. I don't know if I can, since I am running Eve under Wine on linux. However, I am willing to try it out. Is there a way you can compile the application in .NET 2.0 compatibility mode?
Regards,
v.

I am not sure I can compile it under 2.0. The application uses LINQ and lambda expressions extensively which is a .net 3.5 feature.

I am done developing the application now and would like to release it for people to try out the beta. I am looking into the best way to post the current version online. For now if anyone wants a copy email me at and I will send you the exe. Here is an image of what the program looks like when running (it is on the right side)

I'd suggest using Google code to host your application. It's the easiest to get started with IMHO. SourceForge is good but more complex to setup and I wouldn't use it except if you need some feature they offer that Google doesn't have.

Edited by: Ravow on 11/05/2009 20:31:28 Edited by: Ravow on 11/05/2009 20:28:12 We have this thing on our killboard : Killboard kill
This module will be released when completed. We have a log explortator (executable for Windows/Linux/OSX) that send each combat log when it is created. The log are parsed on the killboard.
Please eve-mail me if you want it and if you have some idea to improve it.
Ravow
PS : Have LOT of logs but they are parsed in my DB. EDIT : Also, if you see your log, sometime you will end up with more damage than on the killmail.
This is simply becose of client/server lag and sometime the client still "fire" after the target is lost.
And if the target have 5HP left and you blast it for 1222HP, then on the log you will see the 1222HP but the server will just register 5.
