Higher alpha w/ the artillery makes up for the double dmg bonus going away. PLUS I could argue that the tracking bonus is an indirect dmg bonus. It allows you to achieve a higher percentage of your max alpha due to better hits.
Just how big of a base alpha boost are you looking at with arties??

Good question. The truth is I'm not sure what the magic number should be. My jag spits out an alpha of 869. It will 2-5 shot most frigates depending on speed or tank if an AF. My Muninn spits out 2289. (both w/ RF EMP). Both of these ships will get close to their max alpha due to their tracking bonus.
The Tempest w/ RF EMP will do around 6500. (on my lap top and don't have the exact number memorized.) However it only does 2k-4k on average w/ its hits. Crank up the alpha so it maintains the alpha it's capable of now. The tracking bonus will put its damage at around 5k+ consistently. Now obviously the ammo would change for fleet battles. But if a tempest could do 2.5k - 3k per salvo at 200km - that would be worthwhile to a fleet.

I'm trying to go off of memory w/ carbonized lead and it's max alpha. 4k? So maybe if 3.5k landed. Just giving a concept more then actual stats. I'm not horribly attached to this idea. The Minmatar BS line could go for a ship w/ tracking/optimal range bonus. Maybe at least one and fix projectiles to accomodate the other.

I dunno, I'm probably just being cantankerous, because I really *want* alpha to matter. I *want* Minnies to throw absurd alpha at someone (and the Tempest especially, just because I love the old *****) and an optimal range bonus seems pretty fail to me. :-/
I don't really *want* an optimal bonused Pest. I Want Moar Damages!

30% - 50% boost is what I had in my head. Reduce ROF to maintain the same dps.

I always thought it kind of funny that auto cannons turn on and off. IRL an auto cannon is able to just keep firing until it overheats or needs to be reloaded. Why not make auto cannons have a ridiculous rate of fire at a smaller damage, hold more ammo while making ammo cheaper. Just turn em on and watch them spew bullets like a real autocannon.
as for artillery, they need OMGWTFBBQ damage at OMG range, at OMGWTFFAIL rate of fire

How's about we boost proj damage by 25%, drop the damage bonus on the ship and make it a falloff bonus ?
I mean, projectiles will still suck on unbonused ships (since we all agree that they suck on bonused ships as is, so a damage increase wouldn't make them overpowered) but would rock balls on mini ships :) Tremendous, scorch-like range with barrage, a decent range advantage over other clsoe rangers with normal ammo.
Would actually make arties more competitive, still not great, but not AS awful either. More extreme range, and more damage at the current ranges. Since all you're likely to be using is tremor anyway, pushing the falloff to maybe 60 or 70km would give maybe 200km optimal + falloff ?

AC's do the worst raw dps of all close range turret types if i am not mistaken, due to base damage and falloff.
Factor in that we essentially have to use Barrage in fleet fights and suddenly the em/exp damage type some people tote as a bonus is down the drain- oh and we still have less range than Scorch.
Did i mention AC's work in falloff? That isn't properly compensated for. Secretly MirrorGod. Apparently

can't we do something that boosts the smaller tiers aswell? i believe, the rep fleet stabber is the only weird ship that has a use for 650mm and one is still gonna get EFT-flamed for that fitting |

Well, I don't think there is a hell of a lot wrong with smaller weapons. Maybe a tracking buff on AC's, and a slight alpha buff on artillery, plus a bigger clip on 720's, but the rest seems pretty decent to me.
Oh and add falloff to tracking modules. That would help minnie and all projectiles a lot. It would also allow us to fit the counter to TD's, which is part of the rock, paper, scissors philosophy that this game is built on.

Artillery does not excel at anything. It has the worst DPS by quite a bit, average range, horrible tracking, and comparable alpha to Tachyons.
Nothing about artillery has it stand out from it's counter parts, at all.
Either add 1600mm artillery that does about the same increase in DPS as Mega Beams -> Tachyons, with significantly higher alpha (Talking about 20-40%) with comparable fitting requirements (Throw in some higher caliber rails also while you're at it.)
Or just change artillery to what I was told they were in the first place... terrible tracking, decent range, insane alpha. Let's be honest, alpha generally isn't anything too special in PvP in most cases, but neither is artillery at its current state. I have 14 million skill points in gunnery, and I am always out DPS'd by my corp mates when killing POS's in their tech 1 fitted abaddons and geddons.
For the love of Minmatar, give artillery some loving. I'm fine with autocannons, they're a tad on the weak side but they do the job fine I think. I haven't even touched any artillery ships for a couple months because of this... in fact I am just finishing up Large Energy Turret 5 tonight and am planning on hopping in an apoc or abaddon soon.

I'll be training medium beam/pulse specialization tomorrow in preparation for large. I have a feeling Artillery is always going to be inferior to beams and rails. Glad I'm finally finishing training now though.

So is this topic being ignored because CCP thinks large artillery is balanced, or because they don't want to address the issue? >_>

I believe they want to get the easy stuff such as the nag out of the way first.... unfortunately that's gonna come back to bite them when they realise fixing arty will change any nag fix
