...Have you ever seen a movie like Transformers? Where they pain the intended missile targets with small beam lasers mounted on their weapons? think of target painters like that. And consider caldari missile boats to be beam rider ships.
why movies? target painter exist in real world already for decades and it IS a weak modulated mostly ultraviolet laser beam, mostly used in army for cruise missiles and laser guided bombs. not for cannons. no kidding.

Originally by: 5pinDizzy 2. It makes sense if you look at the launcher slot layouts on caldari ships. 3. Having them in mid slots will cripple the defence of any shield tanking ship that uses them due to everything else they have to try and cram into their mids and since they are to be used at under 30km you can't make excuses for it.
Not really, I'll explain. Generally if a caldari pilot is gonna fit target painters on their ships they're going to be fitting heavy gank, light tank, so as to do maximum dps with their weapons. On the stealth bomber, that would also force people to chose between a bomb launcher/cloak or target painter. And not to mention, last time I checked my golem, TP's work out to about 110km optimal+falloff.
SB are pointless anyway now, but still they have now more highslots due to new cyno ability. hound has definitely 5 highslots, not sure bout other. 3 torps, cloak an tp - perfect. its 30 km optimal and 60 km falloff base, means they are only half effective on that distance, giving the fact they are only interesting for long range setups (80+ km optimal)its kinda stupid to have such short range module. btw i would like to see setup for a regular raven, capable to do bonus pocket of angel extravagansa or any other mission that requires omnitank, with target painter fitted, no officer, capstable without boosters.

Originally by: 5pinDizzy I don't use them personally as I think they're useless, but if they were a high slot I'd consider it as it could be a better option then putting a salvager in that last crammed utility slot. That is all.
I use them often, they're pretty handy in both PVE and PVP, especially as a caldari pilot.
aside from caldari no one has enough med slots to fit them on BS. cap stable lvl 4 armor setups usually deny even the possibility to fit any other module aside of cap rechargers as they need 4-5 of them. the only shield tank gunner maelstrom will definitely fit tracking computer aside of energy systems, tackles and ab/mwd, not target painters. i would say all sniper ships would profit from tp being highslot. nearly all of them have spare highslots.

I have my TP skills trained up pretty high and I think this is a dumb idea (though it would work to my advantage as I fly Minny recons).

Turning this into a High slot module would totally gimp the Typhoon. To do any real DPS, you need to fit 4 turrets, 4 launchers, AND a TP
That requires the TP to stay on the mid slots.

The whole point of it being a midslot item is that you have to trade some utility effectiveness to get the bonus it provides. Sticking it in a spare utility high-slot so you can add a touch more pimp to your shield tank without any penalty isn't exactly a call for balance.

This is very true. To be perfectly honest though, I'm surprised that they take up a slot at all. Why should a mid-slot be used to represent a Minmatar janitor standing at a window with a laser pointer pen?

Balance is not necessarily making tradeoffs. Some things are overpowered and simply need to have their effectiveness decreased, others are simply not good enough and need to have their effectivity increased.
I agree that target painters should occupy high slots instead of mid slots. This would benefit mostly Caldari battleships, and they do need this benefit after the recent missile nerfs. |
