Love them, out of all the ships i have tried in eve with my main account and this one i have just to say that i love frigates i love their speed and how they move in combat overall so questions:
1-Is it even remotely possible to do (lets exagerate here) level 5 missions with a frigate lets say a T2 or a faction frigate equipped with T2 items and T2 ammo?
2-If i wanted to do some PvP with a frigate which should i pick which is top one at the moment?

1. I've heard of people doing lvl 5s in stealth bombers, by going in, sniping the target and then leaving, but it's generally not advised to try to do them in a frig. The issue will be that they web and neut, meaning that the speed/sig tank that frigs use goes straight out the window.
2. It completely depends on what your skills are and how you like to fight. In general though, you'll want to take a T1 combat frigate and go and lose about 10-20 of them to get your feet wet in PvP for cheap (you'll lose a lot at first). After that, AFs, Intys, and Faction frigs are all great boats if you have deep pockets and the skill to keep them alive. Don't try to jump straight into them though, because you'll die a lot in PvP learning the ins and outs of it. |

Rifter. For T2 probably taranis (highest frig DPS I think) or wolf (T2 rifter). |

Rifter, Merlin, Punisher, Incursus, in no particular order. They can all pvp just fine but do have different strategies and targets, Looking at T2 it's Vengeance, Crusader, Jaguar, Harpy, Taranis, Ishkur, Enyo.
There's more frigate types, EAS (which aren't very good generally), bombers and covert frigates are very useful in fleets.

While Rifter is the most popular and probably best all-round T1 frigate there are lots of frigates and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. A major advantage of flying non-rifter is people will be uncertain of your capabilities and can be suprised. Also, the 'fat boy' Tristan deserves a mention as a great little PVP frigate. Taranis is good but not the highest DPS T2 frigate, it is the highest DPS interceptor. Assault frigates and faction frigates are frankly awesome. The pirate faction frigates are monsters and as such incredibly expensive. FIRE FRIENDSHIP TORPEDOES ! Louis's epic skill guide v1.1 |

Merlin Punisher and Rifter are rock solid.
Punisher and Rifter have an advantage over the merlin because they dont split there slots and there gun bonus.
However the merlin is a very good tech 1 tackler. I personally love it.
Assault ships and solo interceptors for all races are a blast to fly. Taranis tends to be the Epeen frigate of choice for most people.
Being able to fly a variety of t2 frigates is NEVER a bad idea. Noir. and Noir Academy are recruiting apply at www.noirmercs.comI Noir Academy: 60 days old must be able to fly at least one tech II frigate. I Noir. Recruits: 4:1 k/d ratio and can fly tech II cruisers. |

I would agree with this, but with the caveat that this is a starter recommendation. Rifter is a great ship for your first month or two of play because it lets you fit a wide variety of ways and get a good handle on the general ropes of the game. Once you kind of know what you're doing I'd train all of the T1 frigates and actually find one that fits with the playing style that your preferred rifter fit caters to.
For instance, I have an entirely inappropriate love for the heavy-fit blaster fatboy at this point, because no reward without risk and BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD. |

Glad to see frigate pilots are not a dying breed. The Rifter is good for a starting ship as it has just the right balance between pew, tank, and speed to make it easy to fly without much experience. If you're flying in gangs, the Punisher, Kestrel, Merlin, and Incursus are all great, too.
All AFs and interceptors are fun to fly. Some are better solo than others, some are better in a gang. Electronic attack frigates (and their T1 versions) are fun as well, though the Gallente and Minmatar ones are a bit overshadowed by their cruiser versions. Bombers are nice if you want near-battleship size damage in a frigate package. And, last but not least, the faction frigates provide a wide variety of high-price, high-reward options.

EAFs aren't that bad. The Hyena can be tanked pretty effectively with a 400 plate without losing too much speed (the main penalty is agility, which you probably don't need much of).
However, EAFs are, in general, pretty squishy (even when you tank them) which is why they're often overlooked. |

Note that frigate rebalancing is about to happen and there's some very funky changes coming up. |

Yow. What kind of funky changes are you talking about? Good funky or bad funky?
The Rifter's a good starter frigate that doesn't require too much fancy stuff to use. A pulsed MWD can get it up to about 5 kilometers/second while a Meta 3 / Meta 4 afterburner gets around 2 kilometers/second. |

The "funky changes" are a series of rebalancing changes to make every race have 4 viable combat frigates. Stuff like the Incursus getting different bonuses and more low slots, the Merlin losing its missile launchers for another hybrid hardpoint and getting a hybrid damage bonus, and apparently the mining frigates (Tormentor, Bantam, Navitas, Burst) being re-imagined as med-range platforms. ...
You can't get the rifter above 5 km/s without 3x t2 overdrive injectors and an HG snake set.
Even if you overheat you can only get 4950 with one overdrive.
