Hiya, just want to share with you guys the success I have been having by trading.
Last week, on Saturday, 4/18, I began trading after reading a few posts on MD. It sounded interesting, profitable, and fun. And it definitely was! I began trading with a mere 159m, which by Sunday, 4/25, grew to 1.1b. I really was amazed at how easy and fast it was to make money by trading, I have been ratting all this time and never knew it could be so profitable by hauling some implants and modules just 9 jumps out of Jita for a big chunk of profit.
Now, the downfall: Today, about 10 minutes ago, I packed up about 20 +4 implants, 15 Cloaking mods, and 2 +5 implants to bring 9 jumps away, to Amarr. I warped to a gate in my badger in high sec (I only trade in high-sec), and my phone starts to ring. I go to the kitchen, pick it up, come back, and see myself in a pod. I really didn't know it would only take 30 seconds to be suicide ganked! I am pretty frustrated at the moment, knowing I lost that I worked so hard on Suicide ganking is lame, but I understand it is a part of the game. Oh well, guess I will just fund next month's game time with my credit card.
So, my question to you: What do you guys do to prevent suicide gankers? I didn't put anything in my midslots, but I doubt it would have helped much since the ganker was in a BS, I wouldn't doubt that he would be able to one volley me even with shield extenders or plates.
Thanks guys

A tip is to never use the autopilot unless ur in a frieghter.

but congrats on your business, you doing great if turned 150m into 1.1b within a week
I strongly suggest to fit some shield extenders, specially if you are moving hella expensive stuff.
They totally help against suicide lamers. Notice CONCORD is fast so they need a very high DPS rate to blow your ship. Some Medium Shield Extender II will do great in your Badger. Then fit some shield Amplifiers (resistances), one of each damage type you think they could use (explosive and kinetic maybe)
For low slots you can fill them with Power Diagnostic System II for better tanking

I haul things in an Orca now and put everything in the corporate hanger.
No muss, no fuss and they don't even know if the required alpha to take down an orca even in .5 is worth it. |

These are suggestions regarding high value transport in anything less than a frieghter: 1 - Agility The faster you warp, the less time someone has to scan you. 2 - Resists, resists, resists. Any spare slots you have, pack with resists. 3 - Never turn away from the screen. Phone Rings, warp to a planet or moon. 4 - Never use autopilot Kill you every time. 5 - Never exceed 500m isk in cargo. It is far better to understand where the likely ganks are going to happen and ferry portioned loads across those systems. I.e. 1/4th of your high value cargo 4 jumps then go back for more 6 - Right ship for the job. Don't be in an industrial when an assualt frigate will do. Sometimes, sounds like your load, a battleship might even be better.

idd it sucks i lost 1 billion in zydrine no so many days ago, i had sick kid aggro (yea thats even worse than just normal kid aggro) so i had to tank that, while tanking that i was afk right outside jita 4-4 asking for someone to gank me, they did :( but the zydrine didnt drop, so i was happy :p
get up in the saddle again :D you are doing really great turning 150M into 1.1B

Edited by: Ambo on 29/04/2009 18:03:45 Nice to hear of your success, your attitude to being ganked is refreshing and I wish you success in building up again.
Personally, I highly recommend courier contracts for transport. You lose a little margin to the cost of the contract and reward but as long as you put enough collateral up, there is zero risk of you making a loss.
If you prefer transporting stuff yourself then there is one rule to avoid suicide ganks: don't leave the keyboard. It's as simple as that.
Edit:
After reading the killmail, I highly recommend you upgrade your shields as well. My Badger MK II has:
Medium shield extender II x 3 V-M15 x 3
This will give you much better survivability. --------------------------------------

Buffer tank > active/booster tank, in terms of pure anti-gank: a "fight" with a suicide ganker is going to last 15 seconds or so, thus you get much more mileage from shield extenders or armor reinforcers: active hardeners would help but only if you consistently activate them each system: chances are in the scenario you describe, you won't.
Your best defense remains your paranoia: if the phone rings or the door knocks and you're compelled to answer it, take the half second to click on a station, or even a planet, and warp there (warp&dock a station). This may have seemed overly cautious before, but I bet you do it next time:)

I've seen several people mention freighters in this thread. I would think they would be at the biggest risk of all, being such big targets- is this the case? Or do their large hp buffers keep them alive in high-sec?

You need to have a group ready to hit a freighter, if you run into that group then you freighter is dead but those groups aren't on unless we are talking prime times(weekends).

1. Containers!! - Gankers scan your cargo and if you are worth more then their ships they will gank. Stuff that is in containers in your cargo hold can't be scanned so they will have to guess. 2. Trade implants, skill books and BPOs with frigate. 3. Don't use autopilot and don't go AFK.

1. Wrong, with exception to the corp hangars in cap ships, from what I understand. 2. Good idea in theory, wouldn't have helped in this case. 3. I don't think he was using autopilot, I think RL just intervened at an awful time. As someone with 3 kids of my own - yea, that happens. No internet spaceship is worth the guilt of not responding to an emergency if it was serious.

Use a transport ship, and add as much buffer as possible. you should reach 15k hp easy, and that will require a larger gang to take you down fast enough.

I keep waiting for the day SoonÖ when I read in the patch notes that cargo scanners will now scan corporate hangars. (Mind you I'm not *wishing* for it...)

You need an armored car to transport the valuable stuff that doesn't take much room. I use a Drake, outfitted with full defenses, like I was doing a L4 mission (but not much T2 stuff, no rigs). Then I impose a limit of $150m on how much I carry at any one point. For the high-volume stuff, I use a fully cargo-expanded Mammoth, but limit myself to $20m in the hold. This way, I can do all my transportation on auto-pilot.

I think that may be overkill. Don't forget - the ganker isn't guaranteed your whole load, and they have to bring enough dps to pop you in about 15 seconds. If you were moving an implant set worth over 1bil? Yea, maybe the armored drake with 20k hp is the way to go.
But I would love to hear from an experience suicide gank coordinator. I'm sure the folks that pull this off have at least a high level understanding of the costs involved. Or they're just filthy rich and do it for the lulz...

well, 2 big mistakes
1. do never tell anyone the goods you are trading and where you do (at least not, when you just doing small arbitrage with good profit) 2. dont hauler stuff yourself
--> courier contracts the best thing for arbitrage trading, they steal your goods? great you dont have to wait for cash (set collateral as high as the sell-value in your target sys). they got suicided? great for your cash. this has just 1 flaw: its always your reputation loss, when a courier-contract failes, but: better then getting bombed ;)

thats so true.. when rl needs attention i dont think twice about looking away from the screen... thats why most of the time im just sitting at the station anyways.. typing in chats, doing orders, and spamming these forums :D

First of all, you weren't suicide ganked by a bunch of battleships, you were suicide killed by one single battlecruiser.
You were in the wrong ship (or too valuable cargo for your ship), you used the wrong fittings (none) and you did the wrong things. Basically, you were an accident waiting to happen :)
It's a good thing that you wrote this, because it will help other traders avoid the same fate, so it wasn't all bad.

Be careful when hauling expensive **** around empire.
For one, in a t1 indy...fit a tank and/or agility mods, and NEVER autopilot (EVER) when carrying something valuable.
Secondly...train for t2 transports. They can fit some ridiculous tanks and have great cargo capacity.
