Hi All
I am completely new to Eve, installed yesterday and ready to go for the weekend... One thing i'm really unsure of is to how, where to go to join a 'guild' am guessing they called something else in deep space, but mmorpg'ers will know what I mean...
Would appreciate any advice, as the main reason I am asking is that I can see the potential to be trying to ask someone in game (ship to ship) and getting myself blown to pieces :)...
Ok, thanks all

Edited by: Alexeph Stoekai on 30/04/2009 09:20:53 They are called "Corporations" in EVE, and I know a lot of people who cringe and hiss at the "G-word". Also, just a pre-emptive related comment: don't call characters "toons", or I may have to hunt you down.
Anyway, now when the threats are out of the way, I'd suggest joining the channel "Mentors". It's a player-operated help and recruitment channel where you can ask questions without being swamped in spam or sharing helpers with hundreds of other angry newbs. You may also want to look into joining the Corp EVE University, which is a very helpful bunch of people ready to teach you every part of the game.
Mechanically, joining a corp is achieved through submitting an application to join at their HQ or one of their offices and then waiting for approval. Generally, it's also a good idea to talk with a recruitment person in the corp before submitting you application to avoid confusion or rejection. |

I strongly suggest doing the tutorial. that will enable you to learn the basic issues without bugging people too much, gives you cash, and useful items (skillbooks). also, watch the chat. just from reading you can gather a lot too. and, when in doubt, right click - it's your best friend ;)
by the way, call your toon (aka character) and your guild (aka corporation) whatever you like, while doing quests (aka missions). most people usually understand what you mean and forgive rookies (like I am too, hehe)

The best way to start out is asking in local chat for pickup groups. That way you can group with people, shoot stuff and get to know them. And they'll invite you into their space guilds if they like you.
Sometimes people in the starter areas don't want to play in groups though, so you have to fly to lowsec first. The problem is that lowsec is very empty so you have to look around for a crowded system if you want a good quest hub, but don't give up. |

I try to stay in character as much as possible in mmorpg's... and don't use the 'slang' of toon... newb... LoL... etc. etc. so no worries there... but thanks for the heads up, good to know.... now what colour was your ship again *grins*

I often call characters 'toons' because it's easier to type; I've never played any other MMO for any length of time.
What's wrong with that?

I'm not going to say it is right or wrong... But I've always wondered why you would call a character a 'toon'.
I've been playing games for literally decades now... I've seen your in-game persona referred to as a character or an avatar often enough... And I've seen plenty of slang and short-hand abbreviations like 'mob' and 'char' that make sense... But I've never played any game that actually referenced them in any way as a 'toon', nor have I ever seen any explanation for the word.
Anyone care to enlighten me?

I have been playing mmo's since 2001 with DAOC. I started playing with some people I worked with that had been playing EQ for years and they pretty much all used the term 'toon' for their characters. I asked why and they said it was just some common slang and that it is simply an abbreviation of 'cartoon', because your character in game is like a cartoon character.
I always called my characters characters, because I felt like a ****** calling them toons --------------------------------------------

Do the tutorial!
Do all three "Career Development" streams!
Even better, do all three streams for all four empires :) You'll acquire something like eight mining frigates, four fast combat frigates, 8 of the smaller "industrial" ships, a dozen-odd overdrive injectors and cargo expanders, and several million ISK. Not to mention a bit of experience at playing the game and what kinds of questions get you answers versus boos and hisses.

Greetings Mara
Just to clarify... I am able to do all three streams with Bakti?... I thought I had to choose one out of three as my chosen career path...
I am doing the tutorial... managed to get myself lost in space yesterday, with no way of finding where my home space station was... Hopefully i'm not the only fool to have done this... Bakti is now officially a nomad, with no fixed abode *laughs*...
Thanks to all for replying, and of course please all do feel free to open a comm channel to me when you see my ship, it will be the one that's piloted erratically *laughs*... Just don't go luring me to some quiet spot and robbing me... cos I never forget and will send hunters after you *cackles*...
Hoping i'm gonna love this game and the community...
Bakti Out......

Yes, you can do all 3.
To re-find your home base, open the assets tab - it will show all stations which you have belongings located at. You can set the autopilot from there. ---------------- Ambulation Answers

Gotta say that the four or five times i've posted a question or asked for a group i've had absolutely zilch response....
Funny I just mentioned to a friend that i'd started Eve and he said that he played it for a while and the reason he left was as he could get no one to talk to him in game...
Is this a common issue.... starting to worry a bit now :(

Do not listen to a single thing that anyone from Goonswarm says, lol. Trolling for cheap noob kills is their bread and butter. Don't enter lowsec until you are ready and able to pvp and lose a ship. Cause it will happen. Independant Trader |
