Actually, this contest was originally intended for stories posted on EveFiction.com, so I must say that I'm going to need to give preference to the ones that are actually posted on the site. This way people can actually compete with Verone.

I almost didn't notice that the deadline has passed, so no more entries. I've still got a couple left to read, so I'll hopefully be able to post winners within a couple days. And yes, I'll try and give some comments about them.

Okay, winners announced:
First Place: Always a slave by Reimei Kaminamida - 500 mil Second place: Scotty by Derboff - 250 Mil Third place: Under Investigation by Reicine Ceer - 100 Mil
6 Honorable Mentions 50 Mil each (I decided to make it like the special olympics where everyone gets a prize) - in no particular order
Acquisition Impossible by Imiom Ravena Trouble in Paradise by Alphdog Revenge of the Voice by Nogunata Stevesan Living a Lie by Shalee Lianne Ghosts by Rachel Silverside Life of an Outlaw by Verone
It's important to note that half of these entries weren't technically valid and I had to let that affect my decision :)
Always a Slave by Reimei Kaminamida This is an exciting action-adventure story (almost long enough to be a novel) about an ex-slave who is being hunted by her former owners. She is captured by Blood Raiders, flees through a wormhole and has some neat little chase scenes. The main character, Amaterasu, is an interesting person, who is rather whiney, cries a lot, has some notable self-confidence issues, but also has some real skill as a pilot. She also has a weird secondary personality living in her head, an Amarrian overseer who constantly belittles her, and adds a very interesting dynamic to the character. It reminds me alot of a Farscape sub-plot, and I suspect that we will find out later that the personality has been malitiously planted in her consciousness by the people chasing her... however, the story isn't finished yet, so I'll have to wait to find out. There's some grammer and choppy language that could be cleaned up, but I felt the important aspects of the story such as flow, pacing and perspective were mostly spot-on. The story picked right up within the first few paragraphs and with the exception of a couple RP-based chapters, moved swiftly and consistently. The action didn't pause for background information, giving the reader only what they needed to know, and I was rarely confused about what was going on. Only a few times did the author seem to forget who his point-of-view character was. The story also didn't rely on cheap literary devices like sex, super-weapons, God-men, artificially witholding information, or wild coincidences (with the exception of a wormhole that seems to appear out of nowhere). It's also worth noting that this story is some kind of RP event, which is something I don't really understand, as I can't seem to get into RP, but no doubt offers another level to the story.
Scotty by Derboff This is a very short snippet of the life of Scotty (the guy who always tells us to wait before we can change ships). It's not really a story but instead gives some nice background about the docking yards and what it takes to manage all our ships coming and going. I liked the acronym and the subtle way the story implied a distant historical connection. The only thing that confused me was the female thing. It seemed random and disconnected from the rest of the piece and wasn't really explained. Perhaps it has to do with multitasking.

Under Investigation by Reicine Ceer This is a short cat-and-mouse story about a capsuleer who salvages some loot and finds herself mercilessly hunted by pirates over the mysterious cargo. The writing seemed rather technical, and gave me the sense of being in a cold-hearted command center full of people who have no concern for anything other than accomplishing their mission. It made me feel like I was playing EVE, as the events were things most of us have gone through (getting ganked), and it's cool to have a story to go along with those kind of events, so that you actually have some kind of purpose for surviving other than protecting your internet spaceship. I think what the story is missing, is something unique, like a character who sees things differently or a ship that's different than anything we've seen... but be careful not to lose the sense of familiarity that you already have here.
Acquisition Impossible by Imiom Ravena This is the first chapter (or two - there's a chapter break that doesn't seem necessary) of a story about a hauler that inexplicably loses all power and becomes stranded. It seems like it's going somewhere, but there's not enough there to form a real opinion. There's a woman who likes to carry a crowbar around in case she needs it. I wish I knew more women like that.
Trouble in Paradise by Alphdog Due to some confusion Alphdog replied to a thread on EveFiction.com to enter this story. This is a story about a guy on a station who sees a corpse floating in space and feels inclined to investigate, but is suddenly thrown into a wild gunfight. It's not complete, however. It feels like it's going somewhere, but you can never tell. I liked the use of questions and answers, where the reader and main character do not know who the bad guy is or even what's going on, but steadily get their questions answered, only to ask new ones.
Revenge of the Voice by Nogunata Stevesan An entertaining little blog about a guy flying a ship called The Royal Pecker. This one takes more of a humorous aproach and every entry seemed to have something that made me laugh. It didn't seem to be a complete story, but is more of a look into the daily life of a capsuleer and a glimpse of what is going on behind the scenes when we do missions and stuff. I liked how the main character kept making stupid mistakes. I identified with that aspect quite well.
Living a Lie by Shalee Lianne A blog following a character in PIE who witnessed horrible things done in the name of God and now is struggling with hiding the fact that she no longer believes in God, something many of us can relate to. Wouldn't PIE kick her out if they knew? But she's still loyal to the Empire and I think it would be interesting to explore the reasons for that contrast.
Ghosts by Rachel Silverside A story of a guy who salvages an old wreck and finds some zombies. Good for those who like blood and guts.

Life of an Outlaw by Verone This is the one most of us are familiar with. I only had time to get through the first sixteen episodes, but so far I've been impressed with the quality of the prose. Verone is able to efficiently pack his sentences with tons of information without making them overwhelming or confusing and gracefully inserts a multitude of details that paint very vivid images. It's rarely clunky and with the exception of an overuse of the word "crimson", it's not repetitive. The story is extremely violent at times, with lots of well-placed, gory details, but doesn't hide behind the concept of evil to artificially justify the violence. I'll guess Verone is a fan of Quentin Tarantino and The Sopranos. So far the main character, Ethan, is a morally questionable person, ruthlessly brutal toward his enemies and anyone who crosses him, a bit racist, and not entirely concerned about guilt or innocence, but he also tirelessly works toward ending slavery and helping the downtrodden as kind of a twisted, hard-core Robin Hood. With all the one-dimensional good-vs-evil stories in modern storytelling, I find the Ethan character refreshing. My only complaints are that so far the episodes are a bit disconnected without a clear underlying story and there doesn't seem to be a clear point-of-view character.
Thanks everyone for reading and writing. It was a lot of fun :) |

Massive Tarantino fan, hence the disconnected feel to the story unless one uses their mind to put it together.

Exactly what I was aiming for in terms of character, so it's awesome to know that his persona is coming across well through the words.
As for the rest of the competition, I think there's no one more deserving than Reimei to have won. I've written a lot, but the amount that's he's put out in such a short time and the quality of the writing makes my eyes water with pain. Not even I could write that much.
Congratulations to the winners! Awesome stuff

Heh, it really was supposed to be a short story when I started. Honest!
Originally by: Allihence The main character, Amaterasu, is an interesting person, who is rather whiney, cries a lot, has some notable self-confidence issues, but also has some real skill as a pilot.
You know, I always forget until either I'm rereading old things for consistency, or someone mentions it. But yeah, she is really weepy and whiny.
Originally by: Allihence It reminds me alot of a Farscape sub-plot, and I suspect that we will find out later that the personality has been malitiously planted in her consciousness by the people chasing her...
I've actually never seen Farscape before, to be honest. But you might be in for a bit of a surprise where that is concerned. I shall say no more on the subject, though!
Originally by: Allihence It's also worth noting that this story is some kind of RP event, which is something I don't really understand, as I can't seem to get into RP, but no doubt offers another level to the story.
Yes and no. Certain events of the story I've planned out and happen more or less independently of RP or anything that goes on ingame. However, as with parts 6 and 8, there are segments that are based, in whole or part, on RP events where other people sort of take the reins and steer events, and I react and record.

Thanks a ton, that really means a lot. Also, I've been writing enough that I think my brain might have leaked out of my ears a little bit, so I'm trying to slow down a bit.
Thanks so much for reading and enjoying, to all who have. Writing Always a Slave has been and will continue to be a labor of love (yeah, even for Reimei, all you Reimei haters out there! ) and your support has meant the world to me. Seriously though, it's great to see your thoughts, Allihence, as I'm always curious to see how the characters and events are received, so just the experience of entering has been pretty awesome. I hope that, as the story continues to unfold, you guys will keep enjoying reading as much as I've enjoyed writing.
So, really, thanks a ton to all of you, especially those who've taken part in the RP aspects, and in so doing have helped write segments of the story. There are a lot of you, and you all know who you are, so big hug from me to you. Thanks a lot, Allihence, I'm really, truly grateful and more than a little humbled just now. So thanks, all of you, from the bottom of my heart.

Thx you very much Allihence. I understand the confusion with the female thing. There is a reason. All I can say is look out for a novel from me in the future.

thx Allihence for letting me win some money even taking part with a linked blog that is not hosted on your site *bows*. But keeping such things updated on too many locations gets time consuming very fast.
Unfortunately I was on holiday for a week and now gamescribe is down again :( I would like to show you that there actually is a plot behind my story. The difficult thing is that I try to weave it into the daily encounters I have ingame. The bad news is, that I wont be able to play EVE much in the next months due to a new project I may have to work on.. but well - as I tend to say you never know. First of all gamescribe has to get back up and running. |

Allihence! Thank you so much for taking the time to read and digest everything we've submitted to ya! Your comments are very helpful (regarding mine tho, i have a bad habit of writing the first chapter to a book, and leaving the rest in my head...), i may need to go back and add more...
