I say this knowing full well how many miners are 'casual players' or simply don't read the forums but here is some advice for those that have the gumption to do a little research...
The ultimately smart thing to do would be to do something more profitable, which is pretty much any other activity in New Eden period, but if you insist on mining those asteroids for a living then this is probably worth considering.
If I were a miner I would 'deal' with Hulkageddon in the following ways, not in any particular order.
1. Mine semi afk in a ... (what is it called ... a retriever?) [EDIT: its a Covetor] to reduce lost isk when inevitably ganked
2. Mine semi afk in a battleship. While they can still be ganked, it will cost the baddies way more in ships and you can insure for much closer to your value in hull and if you actually work it out the yield lost compared to a hulk really isnt that different, especially when you factor in the chance of losing your hulk during hulkageddon (or any other time).
3. Mine in gravimetric sites to make them work for their kill and use d-scan to check for probes etc and gtfo if anything suspicious happens.
4. Go mine in low sec and actively check local and start aligning while mining and scan with d-scan and gtfo if needed. Technically its safer than mining high-sec since literally anyone in local is a threat and its a simple tool to use to determine if you are threatened. s 5. Ugh,,, join a null sec alliance/corp that accepts pure industrialists.
I would not...
1. Try to tank my ship. This provides you safety versus a solo ganker but frankly just makes you more juicy for a gang, of which there are plenty about. It gives a false sense of security. Forget about this, it's utterly futile.
2. Try to pull concord into my belt to help me. Borderline exploit and it can be countered and at any rate it wont stop alpha damage anyway. (a¦á_a¦â) ~ http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.com/ ~ (a¦á_a¦â) |

If you are popped, don't rage about it... in game or on the forums.
In addition to Grav site mining you can do mission mining for those missions that spawn 'roids. You have the same level of 'protection' as you would in a grav site.

PROTIP; ECM drones
As a solo ganker currently featuring on the HG5 board, nothing will deter me like a swarm of ec-300's around your hulk.
There, that's my good deed for today, some old lady will be stuck on the side of the road because you need to mine in peace in internet spaceships. Now don't you dare cry if you still die to a solo-ganker anyway, think of the old lady unable to cross the road so you could have this advice.

The man has a point. With High Sec being just as dangerous as low sec, you may as well mine in low sec. If anything, it'll force you to be more self aware and attentive and you'll reap greater rewards.

Just to add to this:
- If you can't find any grav sites to mine in highsec, there are usually MUCH better grav sites in lowsec. Either way you'll still have to be scanned down or you'll have to be caught at a gate coming in. The local pirates may have scan ships handy to find you but it's less likely that roaming gangs will. Either way, have scan probes added to your overview settings (under Filters -> Charges) and keep a close watch on d-scan. A good rule of thumb is to just not mine with people in local, but there are plenty of very empty lowsec systems that get very little traffic. The hard part will be getting out the ore you mine. A cloaky hauler or blockade runner would be helpful for this.
- Use an alt to scout the gate/system going into lowsec before jumping through with your slow exhumer. Post with your main or GTFO! The Sandbox = Play however the hell you want. |

To get out of empire typically requires one of two choices:
1.) Join a large nullsec bloc and deal with all of the dumb politics and meglomaniac, egotistical shitlords 2.) Try to live in NPC nullsec where all of the failscaded nullsec alliances live or where you have to constantly deal with roaming gangs that come around to nom on said fail alliances. It's just typically not worth it to try to be industrious out in 0.0 if you don't hold sov, and good luck doing that if you aren't a large power bloc. You'll get steamrolled for lulz.

Believe it or not, there are nullsec groups that do not have 'dumb politics and megalomania'; there are several actually, I would suggest browsing the recruitment FORUMS to find these entities and do a bit of researching instead of using that cesspit of an ingame channel, just saying.
Just because YOU couldn't find it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

There is risk in all of Low-Sec and Null, it can be mitigated by you know, paying attention to the game you happen to be playing at the time. There are also plenty of places in Low-Sec that have practically no active residents, even in NPC Nullsec you can find and carve out your own little area of space.
Its pretty easy, but I guess sitting in Empire space singing 'woe is me' is entirely more enjoyable, who wants an unpredictable gaming experience anyway... BRING ON THE MONOTONY! Inappropriate signature removed. Navigator. |

When you say "Empire" I was thinking you were technically also including lowsec in with that, because it's still in Empire space. Really, I don't care about any of this stuff because I live in lowsec 99.9% of the time. I also do not mine or do anything that doesn't involve crap being blown up. I'm usually not happy unless I'm chasing or being chased around. My post was more aimed at the typical highsec carebear. But your right, I shouldn't generalize all large nullsec blocs as being filled with drama llamas and egomaniacs with engorged purple epeens. There are some out there, but depending on what social circles you belong to it can be difficult at times to actually get recruited into them...without the security deposit and having to have them ship all of your assets to VFK or some other far off lands

PROTIP: Follow point 4 in the OP. The ores in Low-sec are the same as what you find in high-sec grav-sites, so nobody ever bothers mining there, leaving you with a nice, clean belt that you can mine for fun and profit. Well, whatever little profit there is to be had, that is. |

When I began to play EvE, I started as a miner. There was nothing like annual Hulkageddons, but still I was scared ****less because my OMG expensive Exhumer could get ganked by a few cheap ships. Back then there was still insurance when you ate a Concordouken and I thought that if I happened to drop the ****ing stripminers, they'd even MAKE money by ganking my Hulk.
I decided to fit enough tank to be able to resist one suicidal ganking destroyer/cruiser (a compromise between tank and yield), and always do the following:
-Get AWAY from the warp-in beacon. If something lands on your belt instead of directly on your Hulk, you want to be as far from it as possible. Don't warp in and turn on the stripminers.
-Stay aligned. If some potential hostiles land on your belt, you WANT to be just a couple of seconds from warping out. This greatly increases your chances of making it.
I've mined in 0.0, in High sec and in Wormholes, and I never ever lost a Hulk.
I know that if they TRULY, REALLY want to kill you and properly set it up, with a scanning alt and a cloaky ship to jump on your ass and enough cheap, disposable firepower, YOU ARE TOAST, but many people are in this for quick lulz and will not get a prepared miner most of the time.
Miners, as everybody in EvE, might lose their ship anytime. It's a lottery. Those who do boring activities semi-AFK and don't take precautions...well, they are buying more tickets than the rest and will probably learn a valuable and expensive lesson. |

Biomass your miner and ask CCP to delete the profession. Not the miners fault that things like CCP designing the ships poorly, no one wants to see you get a buff but don't mind when Titans got nerfed to buff subcap fleet pilots who kept dying to them, drone compounds and mission loot could out produce your ability to mine in those really crappy ships, and above all things...you didn't bother to do the other more rewarding tasks in EVE but continued to try to prove that mining was a real profession while still being the bottom of the toilet and getting **** on. Yeah, you are not wanted and still cannot prove that you are needed since there was more viable ways to get minerals. |

Well, you know with the already inflated number of people sitting on gates killing mission runner self-proclaiming themselves as the modern day disciples of elite pvp; We had do something a little more 'edgey'.
Getting into TEST or GoonSwarm isn't hard if you actually want to be there; It will never cease to amaze me how many bads can't figure out 2 alliances based on external communities would actually require their member base to be members of said online communities.
Given that most empire dwellers aren't exactly keen on higher order thinking, you sir are just another cog in the machine that we 'megalomaniacs' in nullsec continue to disbelieve in. Keep up the good work, killing all those shuttles and stuff; I just simply cannot believe the amount of fun I am missing out on... Inappropriate signature removed. Navigator. |

Go to low sec, it really is safer were not lying. You lose concord protection yes, but you can identify hostiles much easier, not friendly it's a hostile. It's that easy and it's very easy to find empty system last time I tried in low sec. Making money there not so difficult either, either use your minerals there and build and sell stuff in low for a higher fee since you can, or contract it out for someone else to haul it back to high sec if you don't have the guts to do it yourself. This man speaks the truth, most of Amarr/Minmatar lowsec is empty. Just get away from the Faction Warfare areas (which usually are right along high sec border systems, and you will find all the solace you want; alot of NPC Null is the same, and completely empty.

Just because their recruitment policies involve having a couple brain cells, reading comprehension, and a few other choice qualities so often found lacking in EVE players doesn't mean they don't legitimately recruit. They just don't recruit from the EVE forums, they don't want EVE players, so don't bother trying to get in.
Of course, reading this post requires reading comprehension, something sorely lacking in EVE online players, thus you will keep feeding the wallets of those smarter than you. CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
