I'm not very active in New Eden at the moment but I belive Hulkageddon is yet again active and I can certainly see a good number of threads on the subject so maybe some veterans can help me out.
I have played this game since 2005 but I am frankly ignorant regarding the mining profession outside of 'helping' corpmates by mining in a nano navy apoc in 2007 or somesuch.
I was wondering how much the profession has advanced since the launch of eve. DId we have Covetor's right from the start?
I remember discussion about the worht of a hulk from when it was introduced. I don't remember when it was but I recall a pricetag of 500m being pushed about and then discussion about how long it would take to make a return on the investment. Most of that talk was about low or null sec since it was never originally intended as a shp for use in high-sec but obviously times change and high-sec dwellers also seek to use this ship.
So if anyone can give some detail to the historic progression of mining I (and others) would be sure to appreciate it! (a¦á_a¦â) ~ http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.com/ ~ (a¦á_a¦â) |

Furthermore I guess I should say that I remember mining battleships being somewhat prevalent in 2006. A certain pirate corp would use them to make ISK in Basgerin when not fighting. (a¦á_a¦â) ~ http://getoutnastyface.blogspot.com/ ~ (a¦á_a¦â) |

From what I can find, mining barges were introduced in the Exodus expansion in 04 and exhumers were introduced in Red Moon Rising in 05 WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. Mining has changed very little since EVE was originally launched, the mechanic of activating a module and waiting has not changed at all. I started myself in February 2005, so I can't really speak to the history prior to that, but since then the major changes seen with regards to mining could be summed up as follows:
- Red Moon Rising expansion - December 2005 - Introduction of the Exhumer class mining vessels.
- Revelations I - November 2006 - Drone Regions added to the map and gravimetric sites introduced into the game.
- Revelations II - August 2007 - Introduction of the Rorqual.
- Quantum Rise - November 2008 - Introduction of the Orca.
- Escalation to Inferno - April 2012 - Removal of precious alloys from drone NPCs
I don't have the exact dates for it, but the changing of the NPC market to remove the unlimited supply of NPC goods that could be refined into minerals has had a significant impact on mining as well.
To be honest, it's one of the oldest mechanics still functioning in the game, and in my opinion well overdue for a complete overhaul to make it a more engaging and interesting part of EVE Online, on par with what the new probing system did to the exploration career. |

In the beginning of the game pretty much EVERYBODY mined. Techell Corp was the largest battleship manufacturer in the first year of the game and most of their sales by far were done 'bring-your-own-minerals'.
Also the meta versions of the mining lasers were the most expensive modules in the game until T2 mining-lasers were finally introduced (I don't remember exactly when that happened, the old website had a nice page with all the different EVE-updates and their content, but I can't find it anymore). It's true. Back in 2005 almost everyone I knew who were playing started with training mining to level 4 so they could use t2 mining lasers and get the ISK for their first combat vessels. |

April 2008 The day they took shuttles off of NPC markets and made them player-manufactured effected the 2.4 ISK per unit cap on trit. and thus effected mining as well.

This might be the one you mean, it's the one I used to find when barges and exhumers were introduced. WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place... |

I started Eve (with a different Char) in June 2003 a month after release.
There were 4 ship types. Frigate, Cruiser, Battleship, Industrial.
In the beginning, as has been suggested, most people mined. We got in our frigates, warped to belt, mined, warped back to station. Rinse and repeat until I could afford a cruiser and an industrial.
I used to wake up in the morning, set my indy off into a belt and leave it afk mining with one T1 mining laser and then go to school. Coming back to a cargo load of veld was awesome! 50k-100k was so much isk! The asteriods were massive and you didnt get suicide ganked.
Eventually I joined a corp and we all mined together in our cruisers and with dedicated haulers. We pooled our money and got me into an Apoc which was the best mining ship there was (7 Meta 4 mining lasers!). I then helped to make enough for the next battleship and we carried on until everyone got a battleship, obviously the process sped up as we went. Looking back it was some of the best fun I had, shooting the breeze with my fellow corp mates while watching mining lasers and drones (Harvesters) work away while we planned our dominance of the Eve world. |

Execer, I have heard similar stories many times and while I played a bit in beta, I didn't actually get involved in the game until late 2005. I feel like I have missed out on SO SO much in the few years the game was in retail that I didn't participate in.

One of the biggest things to change in relation to mining is hauling and storage.
I joined Hegemonic Core (HC) in the XETIC alliance a while later. We operated in the Immensea area and mining operations of 0.0 began. The methods didn't change, the hauling did. Mining groups would go out and find the coveted Ark roids. Haulers would pick up the ore and haul it to 'depots'. These depots consisited of numerous giant containers floating in space. Some areas had 3 or 4 depots on root and the ore passed between each stage eventually making it back to empire.
This was before stations in 0.0. It was a long way to travel.
Miners were paid a percentage for mining and each hauler was paid depending on the stage and volume they hauled. Miners tracked how much they mined to get paid, and this allowed the management to keep an eye on the goods to make sure thefts were not occuring. I have no idea how people kept track of the payments but it worked very well.
That hauling allowed me to become one of the very first few people to own two battleships. Apoc and Tempest. I was rich! I quit Eve for 18 months just after that. I guess the mining had taken its toll!
Hauling now days is a piece of cake in comparison to those early days.
Logistics changed the mining game more than mining has ever changed.
I always wanted to get some of that in writing, glad I finally have. |

Many Vets will remember the Miner II fiasco, when a few bpo's were prematurely seeded. Together with Harvester drones, they were the biziness before mining barges were introduced.
The oldest vets will remember the days before battleships were rolled out (or at least before anyone could afford one). Thorax was the 'must have' mining ship then!
I remember the first time when a belt was wiped out by a corp before it could re-spawn. If my memory serves me right, it was a big event arranged by BSC in Tew system a few weeks after the game was launched and most players involved were mining in frigates fitted with miner 1's.
We were easily pleased back then!
