New players (Just bought the Box at your local game outlet?) and don't know anything more about the EVE other than it's a Space based MMO?
It is very common to see newer players complain on the forums about this, that or the other thing as concerns EVE "The Game". Quite a few simply quit never to play again which is a shame.
The thing to understand "Right out of the Box" is that EVE is not your average video game. MMO or otherwise. EVE is a virtual existence. What does that mean?
Well, as in life we have to do the things we have to do (work), in order to do the things we want to do. EVE is the same. EVE takes patience, perseverance and a certain mindset in order to be able to enjoy. In fact EVE (this has been said many times and by many people) is a sandbox. Meaning it's simply a universe governed by a set of (virtual) physical laws in which you either choose to exist or not.
Things take time to accomplish so like life, goals are important. EVE is about friends. It is a social experience in which people interact without the consequences of real life.
In EVE you can be a turd and ruin someone elseÆs day without governmental interference. You can steal, kill, hijack (The skies the limit) without worrying about a long jail sentence.
Some people find their enjoyment solely by causing grief for others. And the lament and loss caused by their actions fuels their actions and approach to everything that they do in EVE.
New players might (and with fairly understandable reason), think that this is EVE as a whole. Well thatÆs simply not true. There are many many honorable decent people who wouldn't do that to your virtual self simply because it's not in their nature.
Others look for every opportunity to do just that and spend their every playing minute looking for new victims. These people are the vocal minority. These people are the ones that are the cause for many a rage quit post.
The silent majority simply enjoy the game and the friendships they have cultivated while working towards whatever goals they have set for themselves. EVE is only limited by your imagination. People have done (and do) amazing things and the fun is deffinantly there.
The common (new player) comment is that there is no way to survive amongst players with years a playtime behind them. Just not true. I am 47 years young (lol) and am less than a year old EVE wise. Perhaps I'm the odd man out in that I wasn't expecting a title that I could level out and then actually reach an end-game experience. I actually enjoy the Stanley Kubrick 2001 time scale that everything seems to take in order to accomplish. I have been ganked. I have been podded.
The adrenaline rush I get every time I see a blinky red is not like anything I ever experienced while living in the Matrix or wandering the wastelands of Guild wars.
Ships are basically your avatars but the new player looks at the big ships flying through Empire and dreams of flying one. They work work work until they can afford one (requiring actual work, albeit virtual effort) then get it blown up within minutes of taking delivery of that new ship. Then some rage post. LOL I lost my first Osprey as I was flying it home from the station I purchased it at and back then :) That was a lot of ISK for me.
I've said it before and I suppose I'll make it my sig sooner or later but remember this...
Ships are like socks. You change them often, and lose a few.
IF, and I mean if you want to experience a satisfaction that cannot be found in any other title that I know of. Hang in there and evolve into the EVE verse. You WILL find your place in the game if you take the time and exhibit the patience necessary to do so.
There are PVP centric players and then their are PVE centric players. (Referred derogatorily to as care bears).
New players typically fall into the care bear category (at least at first), and when confronted and victimized by a PVP centric player tend to experience a test of character that unfortunately many do not pass.
PVP centric players (some not all mind you), rag on the "care bears" for not having the spark needed to play EVE as a PVP game. "EVE is a PVP game! Go back to WOW!" sort of thing.
Truth is. We need each other.
PVP players need PVE players and would wither without them. Well PVE players need PVP players as well lol. Through a PVE fleet of NPC battleships at me and while it can be interesting :) It pales to the feeling you get when confronted by a single PVPer regardless of the ship he/she is piloting.
I've seen rookie ships take down a battleship.
Hang in there. Meet some people. Get podded (Your immortal get used to it). Make the fun you are looking for.
Fly safe.

Edited by: Datra on 05/05/2009 08:06:32 I'm less than a month old in EVE. I really like the game, it's deep, it's complete and it feels HUGE.
I do know it's hard. It's going to take me something more than a month to fly my new thorax properly, then to find that it is easily "gank-able" because it's fitting is of course of low level.... and of course that I'll ned a proper mining plan to get myself some ISK. another month of training.
2 months and I'll have earned myself a decent ship and a decent mining plan to earn myself a living. This in a standard low level plan. Of course, training never stops and I'll keep it on so I can upgrade fittings and I can get better ships. But it's hard, very hard. I find my self able to do it, I like planning everything and I find it cool.
I'll start of with some friends that already have cool stuff, and I'll join as a thorax pilot... and afterwards... work. A lot to learn, that I hope I can learn through the forums and the people in-game.
This game is promising to me.. and I just started.

like I said, I'm about 9 months old and I learn every time I play usually. The really cooler stuff is just starting as of recently.
The point of my previous post was mainly to (hopefully) install some promise of light at the end of the tunnel for new people. I know for a fact (actually gut instinct, but I'm sure it's true), that a lot of good people simply quit without ever giving the environment it's chance.
EVE is a form of nicotine. Just harder to give up :) Smarts will get you farther that anything else. Stay frosty
Fly safe

im learning to pvp by losing a lot of ships and a lot of cash, but in the end its all part of the learning curve, each time i engage a player im getting that little bit closer to winning and soon ill take down a target then another and so on till i get my tactics sorted.
reading guides only gives you an idea, actually working on it and playing the game will teach you a lot faster, also i prefer not having my hand held each step of the way makes me feel like a big boy. (29 in RL)

if you fancy playing in a small corp hit us up in hentogaria, and i mean small scale bit of industry and pew pew

Good post OP, thanks! Sums up most of what EVE is about. And is a breath of fresh air on a forum with a lot of "You suck, I quit" messages.
I feel the need to stress the fact that it's a social game. Get yourself in a good player corp, and your enjoyment of the game will grow A LOT.
On the whole "PvPer vs carebear" thing: I've done both, I enjoyed both, both are part of EVE.

lol I would prefer Sweet Honey Pooh Bear personally :) But it doesn't bother me either. It's also not a permanent condition.
I just had read another post a couple of threads down and my OP was almost an anti-rant.
the emoragers just don't get it thats all. If one person reads it and thinks to themselves...
I'll hang in there just a bit longer.
Well then I will have given something back to the community (however minor it may be :))

What I find interesting is that some people never seem to find the forums until it's time to quit. Do they get magical powers that direct them here and give them the patience to type a wall of rage text upon clicking the cancel button?

After a recent spate of postings, I'd just like to reiterate that people can be "mean" to you in Eve, and the GMs won't do anything to help you unless they resort to real life threats or epithets, or actually used an exploit to it. This is by design, so don't go wasting everyone's time by petitioning just because someone destroyed your ship and you didn't want them to.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about you. I meant the people who got the sudden motivation to finally bother posting only when it was time to quit.

I think you're reading too much into our replies. We're just agreeing with you by offering our own insights or summaries which will hopefully help other players understand how Eve works.

Hey, I'm honourable. I can't help that I steal and kill stuff. IT's so much fun. That said, I've never understood scammers. It's too close to RL criminality for me - but as it is part of the game mechanic new players should be aware that it exists and be pretty nasty. If it's too good to be true, it probably is a scam.

No need to apologize, just to realize that not everyone, especially in this section, is disagreeing with or trolling you.
So, I guess it is the "Eve in you" that's causing this. While it's a good defense, it's also something one must learn to control and regulate. That is your next step on the path to enlightenment, Grasshopper.
