Hi all,
Here is an explanation to the recent patches most of you have been seeing.
1. A patch was released on Wednesday during downtime. - Some people were reporting patching issues. The patch was removed and replaced at 15.00 - More info here: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1066154&page=2#39
2. Reports later came saying that it was causing unnecessary issues for people running unsupported versions of OSX, Tiger. The issue was that the dialog box that was meant to only inform the player that they were running the client on unsupported hardware, instead kept them from launching and playing the game. - On Thursday we removed the patch. And we also uploaded a revert patch, so that people that were unable to play the game wouldn't have to download the full installer.
3. We currently have a new patch in house which will not have the above mentioned issues. We are planning on releasing it as an optional patch first and then put it in for everyone in the next EVE client update.

My sincere thanks, CCP - the explanation came a little late, which caused some confusion, but we truly appreciate your efforts. Especially as you are even supporting unsupported versions ;)
Hope to get my hands on the new patch soon!

I though that the blocking was a very intelligent solution to some of the issues people post here about. Almost half of the issues in the forums relate to people running on unsupported Machines or unsupported OS versions. I would hate to see the Mac Support que, I wonder how may issues are posted asking for help unsupported computers or OS versions, bet it is more than a third.
The blocking is a very Apple way to handle this kinda issue. Look as the Pro apps, they will not install on nonsupport computers, even some of iLife will not install on 10.4.11.
One question how long are you going to allow people to play on unsupported OS versions? Are you going to enact this block again when 10.6 comes out?
Eve is a harsh place you won't always have everything go your way, its a do or die world and people do what they can to get along, so before you quit,
Can I have your stuff?« |

Thanks for the update! Is it necessary to apply the roll-back patch? I have yet to do so, and gameplay appears fine. Aside from the update reminders, everything is swell. Actually looks like i'm getting a bit of an FPS increase this way Will the upcoming patch have issues if i don't rollback now?

I'm trying to not overreact, but yeah, that sucks. Cider updates are a big deal around here, so that's just about the lamest reason ever to revert one. ---- FREE Explorer Lead Megalomanic EVE Null-Sec Player Influence Map http://dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Veritefw/FWinf |

i fear it's a case that CCP are damned if they do and damned if they don't really still - it's a good example of how quickly they are able to put out a revert patch - we should treat this as a fire drill and be reassured that if there ever is a very bad patch problem in the future, we will all form an orderly queue, no whining, running, pushing or screaming, and wait calmly for the patch to either be rolled back or corrected -- --- one day we're all gonna die, and then we'll see who's laughing! |

Add to that anyone with an OS older than 10.5 should be warned and prepared for there world to come crashing down.
And that there cries will fall on deaf ears due to the fact the refused to read and comprehend.
No offense gents... I don't have a problem with you running EVE on 10.4 But for you to come in here on a high and mighty righteous riot act... that's just stupid. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= Dependable, Honorable, Intelligent, No-nonsense Vote Herschel Yamamoto for CSM! |

Blocking EvE on Tiger was goodÖ especially if it was done through a check of the metadata in Info.plist because bypassing the block would be easy for people that know enough to be the kind of players that play on Tiger WITHOUT coming to support and forums with problems about it.
A simple warning dialogue will send the wrong message to people and probably will not solve the problem that Tiger is and has been for both CCP and those on the forums that try to help. And here is the proof:
Originally by: Kanos Kajal My sincere thanks, CCP - the explanation came a little late, which caused some confusion, but we truly appreciate your efforts. Especially as you are even supporting unsupported versions ;)
Sorry no. They are NOT supporting the unsupported. They are still not supporting it. The fact that some people do not understand the difference IS why the new dialog is bad.
Originally by: Senyru Suru i fear it's a case that CCP are damned if they do and damned if they don't really
The difference being if they block Tiger they are damned by players that by definition of "not supported" have no right to speak, if they don't they are damned by their own support people and by players that spend time helping other players.

It must be noted that the Mac client has two parts: the EvE part and the Cider part. The EvE part is what talks with the server. Any patch to that part will need to be pushed out at the same time to everyone, will not be optional, will be very very hard or impossible to rollback. An optional, mac only, patch is generally an update to the Cider part. It needs not be pushed out at the same time to everybody and is very easy to rollback (in fact those that use multiple client installations and did them by symlinking only the Contents/Resources/transgaming directory, actually have a a rolledback client already on their machines, if they did not yet copy over the Cider directories to the secondary app-bundles).

Just to clear this up.
1. I download and install the first patch with all the updates in it.
2. I download and install the second patch wich removs the updates that was in the first patch.
Have I understood you correctly?
If the above is correct, how do I get the patch that i was suppose to get in the first place, the client does not ask me to update anymore.
I also would like to add that you should have provided information about the second patch when you released it in your headline news section, not in a forum post. Most people do not search for information regarding a patch, they consider it a good thing and accept it. The information about it needs to be easily accesible so that no missunderstandings can come up.
Best regards mp337

If your client works, than you are Ok. No problem.
The first patch (only available for a few hours) was giving problems to some people (could not install), it was then removed and replaced with the second patch that did install correctly. Both the first and the second patch, if installed on Tiger, would result in the game displaying a dialog telling you you cannot play on Tiger then quitting. If you are on Leopard this does not happen. Note that the patch is not "wrong". It's just unconvenient for those playing on Tiger (and note Tiger is not supported and you should NOT play on tiger, anyway).
Wether you are on Tiger or on Leopard, if your client starts and does not ask you to patch you are ok.

There's no such patch yet, but it sounds like it will be released SoonÖ.

Hmmm. The second patch fixed my 2 hour crashing problem. Im playing on Leopard and things are finally golden. I played for two 4 hour sessions this weekend without a crash.
I am reluctant to apply the undo patch as I understand its a revert patch which will essentially put me back to crashing to desktop every couple hours, sounds like just the patch I want to apply eh?? So now every time I start the game, I have to click NO to patching twice to play instead of patching to remove a patch that actually fixed my problems. Sorry, but I could care less about those that choose to not upgrade their OS to the supported version. If they can make it work, good for them, but CCP removing a patch because of their compaining is silly. Thier OS is either supported or it isnt. CCP shouldn't play both sides of the street.
My biggest question I guess is why on earth would they put out a revert patch for everyone when its really only those that are playing on unsupported OS that need it? Why not give them people an optional downloadable patch to apply instead of taking away the patch from everyone? If they are going to make patches due to isues with unsupported OS's, why stop at Tiger, Ill bet there are some people on even older versions of OS X that would like to play too...
The idea of having a line in the sand and only supporting beyond that line is sound business practice in the software world. You cannot support everything. Releasing much needed patches only to take them away because of some issue with an unsupported OS seems to fly in the face of this. Jeez, what if there are issues with WinNT or CentOS too? Where is that line in the sand?

Think you can hold out for a couple more days?
If not, I suppose you could play around with the autopatcher url and point it to localhost or something similar, to see if it disables the update message.

I can hold out for the next patch, except now I am relegated to looking in the forums to see if its the one that will actually be a patch or if its still the revert patch.

As it turns out, the last patch, put things back to the way they were prior to this entire patching mess. Crashing is back every couple/few hours... Sigh..
The first patch had it fixed, I could play 4-5 hours a pop, no issues. That patch was pulled due to unsupported OS users having issues and a rollback patch issued. I lived with clicking NO twice every time I started the game to keep the crash free version of Cider, figuring the next full patch would take care of things since they obviously figured out what the issue with the crashing was. Full patch comes along and is not optional, so I patch, and low and behold, the old version of Cider is back and crashing like before.
Come on guys, whats the hold up? I KNOW you have a decent version of Cider running around that fixes these things. Why are we running on the older version? Why was the updated version removed on account of users using unsupported OS?

I donno. I run 2 clients since the patch that was patched back after the patch.... ... and must say that it behaves much more stable then before.
I do get sometimes a crash after quitting EVE, but hardly ever when playing it. Also that dreadful socket closed behavior seems to be nearly gone.
The only thing that really annoys the hell out of me are those light flashes in missions and even got them while mining. Other then that I don't have much to complain for.
