As far as I can tell the pod was knocked free from the balloon by the turbulence of the jet stream.
The rest of the "vehicle" completed the trip up and back.
The pod would have been travelling at around 58m/s on impact if it had no parachute. |

Do we know the pod came off while the balloon was still climbing? Im wondering if the reason we were seeing the horizon behind the pod just before losing the pod was drag from the descent. I was the mission planner for the NASA solar aircraft program (Pathfinder and Helios) and we never saw turbulence that violent at altitude. This makes me think it was not turbulence, but a descent through the air, with the chute oscillating side to side, swinging the payload about and allowing drag to blow the pod off to the side.

No on both accounts.
Wasted time would imply they didn't enjoy it, which is clearly wrong if you watch the Mission Debriefing videos etc.
Also, it was at least successful once ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqoX38zv1oE ) and today's run was pretty cool, too, even tho the pod warped off. |

Those are from the cameras on the main rig which were recovered, the pod itself broke off and plummeted back to Earth before decent.
They look great tho! |
