Ya, I was thinking of mentioning that it's not all Wine specific.
There is plenty of reports of black screen and plenty for file corruption also.

I updated the game under Wine without any problems. I can run the game just fine under Windows but I get the black screen crash under Wine - yes, it is the same install shared between Windows and Linux.
I'm runnning the beta version of Windows 7 (32bit) and Wine 1.1.21 (64bit), both on the same dual-boot system.
Yes, I do run with sound activated under Windows.

Getting reports on the full issues thread that turning on Windows terminal services fixes the problem (http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1071924&page=6)
Anyone know if there's a way to simulate this in Wine?

I doubt it, but at least this means there is an error there on Windows to be fixed. Hopefully the error in Windows is the same thing as Wine, just that Wine is more susceptible to it. I know that Terminal Services on Windows does some funky stuff with the graphics drivers to enable the screen contents to be sent remotely, so hopefully this is just some graphics bug that will get fixed quick.

Well, same again with the full 2.1 GB of offline installer. Checksum error at step 2/3. Hmm ... thinks a bit ... maybe a multitasking issue ... yep, locking the installer to a single processor fixed the installing corruption problem.
Funny how this didn't used to be a concern.
So, I'm sitting watching a black screen too now.

Hmm, I guess I didn't need to the full installer after all. Just had to run the patcher with taskset.

Guys, I found this patch for Wine. Have no idea if it will temporarily fix our issue, but it does seem to have to do with terminal services under wine AND that seems to fix windows (what on earth are the CCP programers doing accessing terminal services is beyond me).

A fix for windows is as follows:
(copied from EggGirl) Well I managed to get past the black screen and into the game.
Im running windows XP. Go into control panel / administrative tools / services. Enable(if required) and start the "terminal service" service.
Start EVE.
Make sure you remember to disable the service in a few days when a patch is released.

applied patch to one of my 3 black-screened clients. It works \o/ --- Why am I playing Eve instead of WoW or any other MMORPG?... They are the only ones that released an "official" Linux client.

found this on the windows forum:
If you are experiencing a "black screen" issue, then try downloading and applying this patch http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch88517-88737_m.exe to update from Apocrypha 1.2 to a new 1.2.1. We believe this will resolve the issue.
Please note that this patch has not had a lot of testing yet, so I strongly recommend that you make a backup copy of your EVE folder before applying the patch.
Let us know in this thread if this resolves your issue.

one line and it changes so much! this generally solved the issue with patching for me had to use: taskset -c 0 ... to enable running the client under wine. it never occured to me that the same multitasking issue was cause of the errors while patching so thank you for this
with the new patches:
downloading from
http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch86756-88517_m.exe http://ccp.vo.llnwd.net/o2/evepremiumpatch88517-88737_m.exe
and running
taskset -c 0 wine evepremiumpatch86756-88517_m.exe taskset -c 0 wine evepremiumpatch88517-88737_m.exe
did the job!

Ben, thanks for verifying that for me. It gave me the confidence to make generalised statements in the main issues thread before I hit the sack last night.

glad this was of use l have been reading through the main issues thread and some others. as it seems quite many have problems with patching. what makes me wonder is that often the NSIS will claim checksum errors but the install is good afterwards. found a report of success by installing new ram modules. corrupted downloads got in the way among other issues.
before installing the patches mentioned in my above post a full client install of the previous version was done. on the final NSIS screen there also was an option to clean up the install files. enabled this for each patch as a precautionary measure. if someone went through the same procedure already but has omitted the last step: please post, l would be interested in this!

I unchecked that both times. No problems at all. The way it was worded made me think it would delete the installer.

good to know! so this means it can work both ways. checking did not delete it by itself. maybe the option removes the files extracted from the 7-zip packed installer. or maybe some stuff in the ... /windows/temp folder of wine. in any case l can not see how this part could affect patching atm.
what is crucial though: patching to version 88737 with taskset ________________________________________ the drowning man who climbs on your shoulders to save himself is understandable-except when you see it happen in the drawing room.

I had this problem and got it sorted piece o' cake.
Open the properties of the eve executable and open the compatability tab, then check "Run in 256 colors". The game runs fine - all colour and hues are normal.
I haven't had the problem since.
Some also recommend turning windows screensaver off, but I'm dubious to whether this has any effect - it didn't work for me.
Good luck!
